    Romance of the stone: cultural interpretationof Yan Yuen Shek (Lover's rock)

    This dissertation sheds light on the cultural significance of Yan Yuen Shek, a non man-made feature, and its relationship with the folk worship culture. Under the influence of prevailing legends probably fabricated after war, Yan Yuen Shek is often misunderstood as a contemporary cultural highlight. Actually, its cultural history could be traced back to the early colonial period as possible. Like other temples in the neighborhood, it had passed through different stages of temple development before it is incorporated into the present Lover’s Stone Garden. Based on the above, the author has some observations. First, folk worship could be manifested in various forms under different circumstances. The evolution from primitive, simple forms to extensive, elaborated forms would not be a linear path but with drawbacks at intervals. Conservationists should look beyond temples and pay equal attention to other less apparent objects. Second, the Lover’s Stone Garden is quite successful to upkeep the setting of Yan Yuen Shek as it was in 1970s but the regulations and planning intention behind the garden is not beneficial to sustain the intangible elements of Yan Yuen Shek, setting some possible constraints to its further enhancement.published_or_final_versionConservationMasterMaster of Science in Conservatio

    Hong Kong government's financial assistance for maintenance scheme (FAMS) for privately-owned graded historic buildings : the case of the repair and maintenance works for Fung Chi Tsuen Tin Hau Temple, Yuen Long

    The Conserve and Revitalize Hong Kong Heritage of Bureau department (BD) implement a Financial Assistance for Maintenance Scheme (FAMS) in 2007. The objective of this scheme is to provide financial assistance in the form of grants for the owner of privately-owned graded historic buildings in Hong Kong to process minor works by themselves from deterioration due to lack of maintenance. This dissertation will evaluate the scheme to find out what works and what does not work as the FAMS has been in operation for seven years (from 2008 to 2015). Up to September 2015, there are fifty successful applications to grant under the financial assistance on privately-owned graded historic buildings. There are twelve applications being processed including nine applications obtained Stage one approval. (AAB, 2015). This dissertation uses the author’s professional experience as a conservation contractor in Ding Hsung Construction Company, to identify the actual scope of work and actual costs involved in the repair and maintenance of a Chinese heritage building in Hong Kong, in order to evaluate the FAMS and make recommendations to make it work better for conservation. This dissertation will focus on the FAMS as applied to the repair and maintenance of the Fung Chi Tsuen Tin Hau Temple, Yuen Long as a case-study.     When Movement Therapy Meets Spirituality: A Quasi-Experiment

    Depression is a public health issue in older adults. This study followed a participatory train-the-trainer approach to develop the Movement-based x ‘Elderspirituality-Fu Le Man Xin’ intervention. Additionally, a quasi-experimental design was followed to evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention. Data were collected from pre-and post-intervention assessments. A total of 135 older adults with depressive symptoms were recruited, 77 received the intervention and 58 received an active control intervention. Repeated measures ANCOVA showed that the ‘Movement-based x ‘Elderspirituality-Fu Le Man Xin’ intervention significantly reduced depression in cognitively sound participants (F(1, 73) = 62.346, p <.001)

    Statistical and fuzzy approach for database security

    A new type of database anomaly is described by addressing the concept of Cumulated Anomaly in this paper. Dubiety-Determining Model (DDM), which is a detection model basing on statistical and fuzzy set theories for Cumulated Anomaly, is proposed. DDM can measure the dubiety degree of each database transaction quantitatively. Software system architecture to support the DDM for monitoring database transactions is designed. We also implemented the system and tested it. Our experimental results show that the DDM method is feasible and effective
