Tuning the Chiral Structures from Self‐Assembled Carbohydrate Derivatives

    No full text
Carbohydrates have been regarded as one of the most ideally suited candidates for chirality study via self-assembly owning to their unique chemical structures, abundance, and sustainability. Much efforts have been devoted to design and synthesize diverse carbohydrate derivatives and self-assemble them into various supermolecular morphologies. Nevertheless, still inadequate attention is paid to deeply and comprehensively understand how the carbohydrate structures and self-assembly approaches affect the final morphologies and properties for future demands. Herein, to fulfill the need, a range of recently published studies relating to the chirality of carbohydrates is reviewed and discussed. Furthermore, to tune the chirality of carbohydrate-based structures on both molecular and superstructural levels via chirality transfer and chirality expression, the designing of the molecules and choosing of the proper approaches for self-assembly are elucidated.China Scholarship Council http://dx.doi.org/10.13039/50110000454

Iron Metabolism Genes, Low-Level Lead Exposure, and QT Interval

Background: Cumulative exposure to lead has been shown to be associated with depression of electrocardiographic conduction, such as QT interval (time from start of the Q wave to end of the T wave). Because iron can enhance the oxidative effects of lead, we examined whether polymorphisms in iron metabolism genes [hemochromatosis (HFEHFE), transferrin (TFTF) C2, and heme oxygenase-1 (HMOX1HMOX-1)] increase susceptibility to the effects of lead on QT interval in 613 community-dwelling older men. Methods: We used standard 12-lead electrocardiograms, K-shell X-ray fluorescence, and graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry to measure QT interval, bone lead, and blood lead levels, respectively. Results: A one-interquartile-range increase in tibia lead level (13 μg/g) was associated with a 11.35-msec [95% confidence interval (CI), 4.05–18.65 msec] and a 6.81-msec (95% CI, 1.67–11.95 msec) increase in the heart-rate–corrected QT interval among persons carrying long HMOX1HMOX-1 alleles and at least one copy of an HFEHFE variant, respectively, but had no effect in persons with short and middle HMOX1HMOX-1 alleles and the wild-type HFE genotype. The lengthening of the heart-rate–corrected QT interval with higher tibia lead and blood lead became more pronounced as the total number (0 vs. 1 vs. ≥2) of gene variants increased (tibia, pp-trend = 0.01; blood, pp-trend = 0.04). This synergy seems to be driven by a joint effect between HFEHFE variant and HMOX1HMOX-1 L alleles. Conclusion: We found evidence that gene variants related to iron metabolism increase the impacts of low-level lead exposure on the prolonged QT interval. This is the first such report, so these results should be interpreted cautiously and need to be independently verified.Version of Recor

Minor mental disorders in Taiwanese healthcare workers and the associations with psychosocial work conditions

    No full text
Background/PurposeHealthcare workers face multiple psychosocial work hazards intrinsic to their work, including heavy workloads and shift work. However, how contemporary adverse psychosocial work conditions, such as workplace justice and insecurity, may contribute to increased mental health risks has rarely been studied. This study aimed to search for modifiable psychosocial work factors associated with mental health disorders in Taiwanese healthcare workers.MethodsA total of 349 healthcare workers were identified from 19,641 employees who participated in a national survey of Taiwan. Minor mental disorder was assessed using the five-item brief symptom rating scale. We compared psychosocial work characteristics and the prevalence of minor mental disorder in healthcare workers with that in a sociodemographically matched sample, and examined the associations of psychosocial work conditions with mental health status.ResultsHealthcare workers were found to have a higher prevalence of minor mental disorder than general workers, and they were more likely to have longer working hours, heavier psychological job demands, higher job control, more workplace violence, and a higher prevalence of shift work. Among healthcare workers, experiences of workplace violence, lower workplace justice, heavier psychological job demands, and job insecurity were associated with a higher risk for minor mental disorder, even after controlling for working hours and shift work.ConclusionDespite the fact that healthcare workers work longer hours and shift work, there were several modifiable psychosocial work conditions that should be targeted to improve their mental health

The Assessment of the Renminbi Internationalization with Comparision to the Dollar Internationalization

China has become the world second-largest economy in terms of GDP since 2010. It was the world largest exporter and second-largest importer in 2011. Its GDP is likely to surpass the United States in the mid-2020s. However, its currency – renminbi (RMB) or yuan has been severely under-represented internationally. Since 2009, Chinese government has officially started promoting RMB internationalization. This paper analyzes the conditions or determinants of currency internationalization. According to the existing studies, output and trade, the countrys financial market, confidence in the value of the currency and network externalities are the four main conditions or determinants for currency internationalization. This paper also includes the role of offshore market and political influence as these two conditions are as important as other four conditions in the case of the RMB internalization. It directly compares RMB internationalization in the 21st century with the dollar internationalization between the 1910s and the 1920s under the conditions assessment.Abstract ..............................................i Table of Contents ............................................ ii Tables and Figures .............................................iii 1.Background ......................................... 1 1.1 Internationalization of the Renminbi Overview .... 1 1.2 Steps in Internationalizing the Renminbi ......... 2 1.3 Research Questions ............................... 5 2.
