This thesis is to study the political role of the People's Liberation Army from the approach of structure and function. The framework of the thesis consists of three major parts, first, the influence of Chinese traditional political culture on, and the formation of, the political role of the PL A; second, the influence of domestic political struggles and external military conflicts on the development of the political role of the PLA; and the third, the analysis of the transition of the PLA's political role from the structure and personnel arrangements of the CCPCC Within the above-mentioned three scopes, this thesis make a thorough discussion on the following: (1) The relationship between the structure of the PRC and the formation of the PLA's political role; (2) How has ideology influenced the army's political role; (3) What is Mao's viewpoint and his influence on the development of the army's political role; (4) What is the link between the army and the party, and how has this developed; (6) What accounts for the expansion of the PLA's political functions; (7) What is the influence of political factional struggles on the PLA's political role; (8) Is it political institution or military institution that controls the recruitment of the military elite; (9) What are the disparities between the military elite in handling international conflicts and what are their political considerations; (10) What is the Party's position in the army; (11) How have the Party’s important meetings and personnel arrangements influenced the rise and fall of the PLA's political role

Making a Transnational Design History in East Asia: Yen Shuilong’s Craft-Design Movement

Yen Shuilong (1903-97) was born in Taiwan within the ‘Japanese Empire’ but his live is dominated by what we would now call transnational activities. During the fifteen years since his death, there have been a number of retrospective exhibitions on him, and these have served to anchor his status in Taiwanese history of art and design. From last year through to this year the Taipei Fine Arts Museum organised an exhibition ‘The Public Spirit, Beauty in the Making: Shui-Long Yen’. (Fig. 2) On the other hand in Japan, even though Yen was Japanese until 1945, he hasn’t been well recognized, and it appears as though he may have been intentionally forgotten with the history of Japanese colonization

High-derivative parametric enhancements of nonparametric curve estimators

    No full text
We suggest a method for using parametric information to modify a nonparametric estimator at the level of relatively high-order derivatives. The technique represents an alternative to methods that first fit a parametric model and then adjust it. In particular, relative to a 'nonparametric estimator with a parametric start', our estimator is not biased by the differences between parametric and nonparametric fits to low-order derivatives, since we effectively remove all the parametric information about low-order derivatives and replace it by nonparametric information. Thus, we employ parametric information only when the nonparametric information. Thus, we employ parametric information only when the nonparametric information is unreliable, and do not use it elsewhere. The method has application to both nonparametric density estimation and nonparametric regression.M-Y. Cheng, P. Hall and B. A. Turlac

Methods For Tracking Support Boundaries with Corners

    No full text
In a range of practical problems the boundary of the support of a bivariate distribution is of interest, for example where it describes a limit to e±- ciency or performance, or where it determines the physical extremities of a spatially distributed population in forestry, marine science, medicine, meteorology or geol- ogy. We suggest a tracking-based method for estimating a support boundary when it is composed of a ¯nite number of smooth curves, meeting together at corners. The smooth parts of the boundary are assumed to have continuously turning tan- gents & bounded curvature, & the corners are not allowed to be in¯nitely sharp; that is, the angle between the two tangents should not equal ¼. In other respects, however, the boundary may be quite general. In particular it need not be uniquely de¯ned in Cartesian coordinates, its corners my be either concave or convex, and its smooth parts may be neither concave nor convex. Tracking methods are well suited to such generalities, & they also have the advantage of requiring relatively small amounts of computation. It is shown that they achieve optimal convergence rates, in the sense of uniform approximation

Choice of the bandwidth ratio in Rice's boundary modification

    No full text
Rice (1984) proposed a boundary modified kernel regression method which linearly combines two kernel regression estimators based on different bandwidths. In the context of density estimation, advantages of this method over two other popular approaches, local linear fitting & the boundary kernels of M¨uller (1991), are discussed. Selection of the ratio of the two bandwidths is studied. Asymptotic & exact mean squared errors are provided as tools to analyze the problem. In the case of Normal kernels, keeping the bandwidth ratio fixed, for ease & speed of implementation, & a specific bandwidth ratio are suggested
