    No full text
A novel in six episodes, this stunning debut by Mary McCarthy follows a young intellectual on her reckless bohemian journey through life and dangerous love in 1930s New York City Margaret Sargent is young and fearless, a deep thinker inspired by the bohemian energy that abounds in New York City in the years leading up to the Second World War. With careless abandon, she destroys her marriage and numerous love affairs as she moves through the social circles of artists and writers, playing at the fringes of political extremism. She is an enigma, often wanton and frivolous, but possessing intelligence and a razor-sharp wit, as well as a troubling core of inner darkness, self-doubt, and puzzling tendencies toward self-destruction. For Margaret, urban life in the 1930s is an ongoing adventure-ever-changing, always surprising, and deeply, profoundly unsatisfying. Mary McCarthy, author of the bestselling American classic The Group, burst boldly onto the literary scene with her provocative debut, The Company She Keeps. A brilliant, stylistically inventive novel, it offers a rich portrait of a truly fascinating protagonist in six revealing episodes. Love her, despise her, or fear for her, you will never forget Margaret Sargent. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Mary McCarthy including rare images from the author's estate.Intro -- Cover -- Title Page -- Contents -- ONE Cruel and Barbarous Treatment -- TWO Rogue's Gallery -- THREE The Man in the Brooks Brothers Shirt -- FOUR The Genial Host -- FIVE Portrait of the Intellectual as a Yale Man -- SIX Ghostly Father, I Confess -- Acknowledgements -- A Biography of Mary McCarthy -- CopyrightA novel in six episodes, this stunning debut by Mary McCarthy follows a young intellectual on her reckless bohemian journey through life and dangerous love in 1930s New York City Margaret Sargent is young and fearless, a deep thinker inspired by the bohemian energy that abounds in New York City in the years leading up to the Second World War. No full text
The purpose of this study is to draw attention to the hybrid of Eastern and Western musical elements, in Chen Yi’s orchestral work Si Ji. In this dissertation, Chen Yi’s Si Ji will be thoroughly discussed by a detailed analysis of the work as well as the background of Chen Yi’s musical world, and the poetry she is inspired by. It will show how the music produces a hybrid of East and West. I hope this dissertation will serve as a valuable source for other composers seeking their own musical colors, as well as researchers interested in the crossing of Eastern and Western music.Item withdrawn by Mark Zulauf ([email protected]) on 2010-11-16T21:19:48Z Item was in collections: University of Illinois Theses & Dissertations (ID: 1) No. of bitstreams: 2 1_Jung_Jae Eun.docx: 2146812 bytes, checksum: 9cbb8fbcca6f2d560d2d3f8dd2461a32 (MD5) Jung_Jae Eun.pdf: 1415259 bytes, checksum: 43f37b28754270bbbec1174661df94c0 (MD5)Made available in DSpace on 2011-01-14T22:41:27Z (GMT). Does Downloading PowerPoint Slides Before the Lecture Lead to Better Student Achievement?: Reply

    No full text
This reply responds to a comment by Cannon (2011) that opens the debate on consistency of the effect of downloading PowerPoint slides before lectures on students’ exam performance. Cannon (2011) points out potential endogeneity problems in Chen and Lin (2008) and attempts to explore the unconditional mean effect of downloading PowerPoint slides for the full sample. In this reply, we firstly argue that the estimates in our original article are consistent since the effect of interest is the “conditional†treatment effect but not the unconditional mean effect. We provide explanations for our rationale of estimating the “conditional†treatment effect. Secondly, we propose a modified downloading variable to replicate Cannon’s analysis. Our results suggest that downloading PowerPoint slides before the exam does not produce a significant effect on absent students’ exam performance which is different from the results in Cannon (2011). Our analysis does support Cannon’s argument that students fixed effects are different across different attendance status.

A Play: Chen Zi-Gao, the Male Queen

    No full text
This is a play adapted from the original play: “The Male Queen,” written by Wang Chi-Te in Ming dynasty. This is a whole new adaptation integrated with contemporary gender concepts and also referring to related historical documents and novels.he plot of the play is as follows: a general, Chen Chien, meets an extremely beautiful young soldier, Chen Zi-Gao on the battlefield. Chen Chien admires Chen Zi-Gao wholeheartedly, so he bestows him a treasured sword and takes him as his personal bodyguard, who also has to serve him at night. After the war, they return home in triumph. Chen Zi-Gao is accommodated in the western chamber and lives with Chen Chien’s wife, Shen Miao-Jung. Chen Chien’s sister, Chen Yu-Hua, meets Chen Zi-Gao incidentally and mistakes him for her fiance. After realizing the truth, she still falls in love with him. So she starts to see Chen Zi-Gao in the western chamber during the night. They have a secret affair. Then the brother and sister, Chen Chien and Chen Yu-Hua share the same beauty Chen Zi-Gao. Chen Zi-Gao falls in love with a male and a female at the same time. Then Chen Chien finally finds out the fact that his sister is having an affair with his beloved bodyguard. He wants Chen Zi-Gao to make a decision. Chen Zi-Gao is given a promise that if Chen Chien becomes King, he will be crowned the male queen. Chen Zi-Gao chooses Chen Chien. Chen Yu-Hua then dies of disappointment and depression.he play tries to present Chen Zi-Gao’s unique character in the combination of his yin and yang characteristics, which provides an authenticity for his homosexual relationship with Chen Chien. Chen Yu-Hua’s active pursue of passion and love makes a contrast between homosexual and heterosexual relationships. In such contrast, combined with power and gender struggle, the unique emotional and dramatic conflict is revealed. In addition to the traditional romance between a gifted young man and a beauty, this play hopes to discover a new relationship and affection through the interpretation and integration of contemporary gender concepts. his thesis will include the play and the author’s reflection on the play to show the beginning and subsequent developments of the making of this play, including the analysis of the original play “The Male Queen.”
