Adaptive Minimum-BER Linear Multiuser Detection for DS-CDMA Signals in Multipath Channels
The problem of constructing adaptive minimum bit error rate (MBER) linear multiuser detectors is considered for direct-sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) signals transmitted through multipath channels. Based on the approach of kernel density estimation for approximating the bit error rate (BER) from training data, a least mean squares (LMS) style stochastic gradient adaptive algorithm is developed for training linear multiuser detectors. Computer simulation is used to study the convergence speed and steady-state BER misadjustment of this adaptive MBER linear multiuser detector, and the results show that it outperforms an existing LMS-style adaptive MBER algorithm first presented at Globecom'98 by Yeh, Lopes and Barry

A new result on the distinctness of primitive sequences over Z/(pq) modulo 2
AbstractLet Z/(pq) be the integer residue ring modulo pq with odd prime numbers p and q. This paper studies the distinctness problem of modulo 2 reductions of two primitive sequences over Z/(pq), which has been studied by H.J. Chen and W.F. Qi in 2009. First, it is shown that almost every element in Z/(pq) occurs in a primitive sequence of order n>2 over Z/(pq). Then based on this element distribution property of primitive sequences over Z/(pq), previous results are greatly improved and the set of primitive sequences over Z/(pq) that are known to be distinct modulo 2 is further enlarged
Power quality programme awareness: Framework for developing countries
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University. In recent years, Power Quality Programmes (PQPs) have become one of the most recent services offered to electrical distribution companies, both private and state suppliers. This is due to the sudden increase in the number of concerns over power quality (PQ) problems. The aim of this research is to study the implementation of a PQP framework, and the obstacles and barriers faced by Libyan Distribution Networks (LDNs) in implementing a PQP. Firstly, to identify the most critical success factors that would have a major impact on PQP implementation in LDNs. Five Critical Success Factors (CSFs) for PQP were identified to examine the level of power quality in LDNs. They are PQ awareness, PQ disturbances, PQ management commitment, PQ employee’s participation and training and PQ customers’ satisfaction. It revealed that all five CSFs were significantly affected by the level of PQ awareness, and the suspension of PQP implementation. An appropriate PQP framework was developed for the purpose of this study to guide LDNs as a case study in developing countries. The proposed PQP framework model was validated based on the identified CSFs, and the barriers and benefits of PQP, which were analysed using different techniques based on both SPSS and NVivo software. The PQP framework was developed from the findings based on the responses of 397 PQ survey participants, and supported by 44 face-to-face semi-structured interviews conducted with professionals and expert LDNs staff. Out of the 16 PQP barriers, 13 were statistically significant, which indicated that Libya distribution systems have already surmounted various barriers to implementing a PQP effectively. The developed PQP framework consisted of three essential phases. Phase one is designed to increase the level of awareness, while phase two involves preparation for PQP, which contains seven crucial requirements. Phase three, which is the implementation, is designed to determine both the weaknesses and obstacles, and is designed to increase the awareness level. This framework encourages and guides the implementation teams to have an obvious and clear awareness and vision of how to prevent existing obstacles from reappearing in different forms, leading to long-term PQP improvements. There were 11 overall benefits of PQP implementation, which would have a positive impact on LDNs

The student's guide to completing an author study
The 'Student's guide to completing an author study' emerged during the early development of the school library resource center program at Glen Stewart Elementary School in Stratford Canada on Prince Edward Island. This research process centered on an author study, with direct teaching and clear assignment. The resulting model has been adapted to various grade levels and subject areas in different schools.Source type: Electronic(1)http://proquest.umi.com/pqdweb?did=49237063&Fmt=7&clientId=65345&RQT=309&VName=PQ
Normalized Volumes of Type-PQ Adjacency Polytopes for Certain Classes of Graphs
The type-PQ adjacency polytope associated to a simple graph is a -polytope containing valuable information about an underlying power network. Chen and the first author have recently demonstrated that, when the underlying graph is connected, the normalized volumes of the adjacency polytopes can be computed by counting sequences of nonnegative integers satisfying restrictions determined by . This article builds upon their work, namely by showing that one of their main results -- the so-called triangle recurrence -- applies in a more general setting. Formulas for the normalized volumes when is obtained by deleting a path or a cycle from a complete graph are also established
