    "Prominent Figures of the World Fujian Communities – The Singapore Chapter 1819-2012", published by the Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan, contains the deeds of 150 Singaporean Hokkien scholars and their contributions to the country. The chapter on Chen Jen Hao introduces the life of the pioneer. Chen served as the principal of Kallang West Government Chinese Middle School (now Dunman High School) in 1956 and retired in 1969. During his time as the principal, Chen inculcated a strong interest in calligraphy amongst the students. This chapter integrates Chen's legendary life as an educator, calligrapher and painter, and reveals his lasting impact on the Singapore society

    This thesis is to study the political role of the People's Liberation Army from the approach of structure and function. The framework of the thesis consists of three major parts, first, the influence of Chinese traditional political culture on, and the formation of, the political role of the PL A; second, the influence of domestic political struggles and external military conflicts on the development of the political role of the PLA; and the third, the analysis of the transition of the PLA's political role from the structure and personnel arrangements of the CCPCC Within the above-mentioned three scopes, this thesis make a thorough discussion on the following: (1) The relationship between the structure of the PRC and the formation of the PLA's political role; (2) How has ideology influenced the army's political role; (3) What is Mao's viewpoint and his influence on the development of the army's political role; (4) What is the link between the army and the party, and how has this developed; (6) What accounts for the expansion of the PLA's political functions; (7) What is the influence of political factional struggles on the PLA's political role; (8) Is it political institution or military institution that controls the recruitment of the military elite; (9) What are the disparities between the military elite in handling international conflicts and what are their political considerations; (10) What is the Party's position in the army; (11) How have the Party’s important meetings and personnel arrangements influenced the rise and fall of the PLA's political role

    [[abstract]]The main purpose of this study is to analyze the professional knowledge of an expert teacher, Mr. Chen, who teaches Chinese Literature in a prestigious senior high school in Taipei City. To address the sprit of the teacher’s pedagogical expertise, the study uses the concept of using “Jen” (Benevolence), drawn from Confucius Doctrine, as the core of the analysis of the teacher’s teaching practice. Qualitative data are collected by employing observations, interviews, and document analysis in the school year of 2002. The major findings are as follows: (1)Mr. Chen’s professional knowledge for teaching contains pedagogical content knowledge in Chinese Literature, curriculum knowledge, general pedagogical knowledge, and knowledge of learners. (2)Pedagogical content knowledge in Chinese Literature: As a Chinese Literature teacher, Mr. Chen demonstrates that the most important purpose is to transmit Chinese culture. And Mr. Chen believes that the theory and practice of “Jen” is the core of Chinese culture. (3)Curriculum knowledge: By using abundant curriculum knowledge, Mr. Chen successfully makes students realize “Jen” as the spirit of the Chinese culture. (4)General pedagogical knowledge: Mr. Chen models himself as a “kindhearted gentleman”, and an exemplar of his students. In short, he works very hard to practice “Jen” in his teaching. (5)Knowledge of learners: Mr. Chen’s teaching performance shows that he knows very well about his students. And Mr. Chen’s understanding of “Jen” assists him to be a good teacher with rich knowledge in this regard. Concluding remarks and recommendation for future research are made in the last chapter of the thesis.
