The “exact sciences” played an essential role in the intellectual training of Cheikh Anta Diop (1923-1986) and occupied a central place not only in his professional work, but also in his political and philosophical thought. The objective of this article is to highlight the relationships that exist in his work between the exact sciences and his prospective vision of the future of the African continent. The realization of this vision, which relies on science and technology, would revive Africa at the end of a “night” of nearly five centuries. We briefly cover the scientific itinerary of Cheikh Anta Diop, with a focus on the radiocarbon dating laboratory of the University of Dakar, which he created and directed until his death. Its strategic vision for the implementation of an efficient scientific and industrial development policy of the African continent is set out by focusing on the energy issue and addressing the issue of the collective security of Africans. The last part deals with the current relevance of his thought. An appendix at the end of the article lists the different contributions of Cheikh Anta Diop in the field of science.

    Cheikh Anta Diop, penseur panafricaniste

This issue of the Revue d\u27histoire contemporaine de l\u27Afrique focuses on the thought and political action of Cheikh Anta Diop. Diop is best known for his scientific work, begun in the late 1940s, in which he explored the origins of human civilisations, their genealogies and reciprocal influences, using the African continent as a starting point. He demonstrated both the "negro" character, in the vocabulary of the time, of ancient Egypt and the cultural unity of the peoples of sub-Saharan Africa from prehistoric times to the emergence of the "empires" of the Middle Ages. In so doing, his work also denounces what he calls the "modern falsification of history", which he considers to be the work of most Western Egyptologists. Cheikh Anta Diop was also a leading pan-Africanist, advocating the creation of a federal state for Africa at the time of decolonisation. Politically, he produced a great deal of theoretical work, while also organising political struggles, mainly in France and Senegal.

During the Second Constitutional Period of Ottoman era, the translation movement of positivist and materialist texts from the West affected a number of the Ottoman intellectuals. The effects of these ideological movements could clearly be seen in their works. Following these ideological changes, the Ottoman intellectual's perceptions towards classical Islamic history has been completely changed. Also, during the constitutional period, the Islamic history literature seems to be demonstrating a different sense of historical approach. It is also observed that during the second constitutional period along with the increased translation activities from the West, Ottoman intellectuals started to accommodate the scientific historiography approach. In his translation of Essai Sur L'histoire De L'islamisme, Abdullah Cevdet translated the title as History of Islam and he called Dozy a complete neutral and a product of reasoning. The majority of Ottoman intellectuals gravely criticized Cevdet's work at that time. This article describes the works which refuses the works of Cevdet and analyzes how they try to explain the concepts like Miracle and the Mirac which are difficult to describe with scientific method. In this context the works of Manastirli Ismail Hakki, Nevsehirli Hayreddin, Sehbenderzade Filibeli Ahmed Hilmi also examined
