Four tier framework for online applications of 3D GIS visualization
The aim of this study is to discuss on the issues related to the use of a new proposed four-tier architecture for online applications of 3D GIS visualization. Conventional design of the system is generated from client/server based architecture. This architecture is the main platform for designing online system architecture, which works based on the distributing concept, which is a tier. The tier is normally set by the developers to separate the works/tasks between the system architecture. Currently, three tiers architecture is the most well-known architecture used in GIS applications and also other application. However, this architecture has some drawback on scalability, maintainability, and also its need more processing power in the middle tier to process the request from multiple of users. Based on the literature study, GIS applications, especially systems, which involve 3D visualization generate a massive amount of data. Due to this situation, the current three-tier architecture used for online application of 3D GIS visualization decrease the performance of the system in terms of time for processing the request from the users. This research explores the use of the four-tier framework to overcome current impediments in the use of the three-tier framework for online applications of 3D GIS visualization. The new framework is designed based on client/server architecture with the tasks distributed using the tier‟s concept. It is formalized into four tiers framework by advancing one more tier into the existing three tiers framework for handling the visualization process. The four tiers framework is divided into the client, logic, visualization process, and database tiers respectively. The unique part of this new architecture is the middle tier which is divided into two other tier‟s, which handle the visualization process and logical process separately and make the framework more flexible and increase its performance. The framework has been successfully implemented in oil palm plantations application using a prototype developed to prove that the framework functions well based on the requirements. Several experiment related to terrain visualization application conducted to give an operational guidelines for developer. The results of experiments helps developer on utilising the best data and technique for developing the required system. The prototype shows that it can aid the oil palm plantation management to visualize their plantation easily in 3D. The oil palm trees can be visualized with 3D terrain in an online environment with GIS capabilities. The characteristic of the oil palm tree data is stored in the database tier, and the data can be modified based on users need. The 3D terrain is generated from the topographic data (LiDAR Data) and overlaid with the high- resolution satellite image (QUICK BIRD). The validation of the framework was performed by comparing the results from the existing three-tier framework with the new four tier framework. The new framework shows superiority in its performance based on loading time, response time, frames per second, CPU usage and memory usage. These results show that the approach in this research helps solve the processing power problem. The framework can be applied by users to visualize a multitude of applications with GIS capabilities in an online 3D environment

3D silhouette rendering algorithms using vectorisation technique from Kedah topography map
Most of the applications in real world today are more toward non-photorealistic rather than photorealistic. Slihouette Rendering Algorithms is one of the technique that important in creating non-photorealistic image. It has been successful used in various applications such as game engine, communicating shape, cartoon rendering and 3D terrain visualization. This paper explores how silhouette rendering algorithms could be created using a data that have been extracted from Kedah topography map. Contour data from a topography map are convert from raster to vector (vectorisation) in order to create a grid terrain Digital Elevation Model (DEM) data. The vectorisation software has been used for producing these data. The data then convert into the format that suitable for existing 3D silhouette software. The results produced compatible terrain images of Sik District, Kedah that are closer to human drawn illustration and look like an artistic style

Using Game Engine for Online 3D Terrain Visualization with Oil Palm Tree Data
Nowadays, cartography, otherwise known as mapping, are serving people in multiple aspects of livelihood and administration like planning, rescue, military, and tourism. The information is usually presented in the map by using legends, elevation, and contour. With the passage of time, many new methods of mapping are introduced which are divided into the non-digital and digital version.Another method used is the incorporation of 3D modelling in virtual aspect by simulating real-world data.In the recent years using the game engine is one of the important 3D modelling approaches obtained. The game engine has a lot more capabilities to simulate real-world terrains whereas using database support for terrain visualisation, new functionality can be used. This article discussed how to utilise game engine technology for developing 3D terrain visualisation with oil palm tree data. With the success of the system, it, therefore, gives benefits to potential visitors especially the manager of oil palm plantation, decision makers and planners to explore the online 3D terrain visualisation with oil palm tree data and manage it
Fractal in modeling natural objects
Austere geometry is able to precisely describe man-made objects like furniture, automobiles and buildings, which usually have smooth surfaces, but it merely gives approximation to natural objects with geometries of high complexity such as plants, clouds and mountains. Consequently, man-made objects can be easily rendered nicely. High complexity geometry of natural objects prevents very precise rendering using classical geometry. Fractals have been used in computer graphics to model natural objects like terrain and plants. This chapter will discussed on basic fractals classifications and fractal models that produced natural objects like terrain, plants and lighting. Fractal is derived from the Latin word ‘fractus’ meaning broken or uneven. It refers to any extremely irregular curves or shapes that repeat themselves at any scale on which they are examined. Mathematical definition for fractal is a set of points whose fractal dimension exceeds its topological dimension. The key concept of fractal is self-similarity. An object must be selfsimilar when magnified; where subsets of the object have resemblance or identical to the whole object and to each other
