Real-time sign language detection: Empowering the disabled community

    No full text
Interaction and communication for normal human beings are easier than for a person with disabilities like speaking and hearing who may face communication problems with other people. Sign Language helps reduce this communication gap between a normal and disabled person. The prior solutions proposed using several deep learning techniques, such as Convolutional Neural Networks, Support Vector Machines, and K-Nearest Neighbors, have either demonstrated low accuracy or have not been implemented as real-time working systems. This system addresses both issues effectively. This work extends the difficulties faced while classifying the characters in Indian Sign Language(ISL). It can identify a total of 23 hand poses of the ISL. The system uses a pre-trained VGG16 Convolution Neural Network(CNN) with an attention mechanism. The model's training uses the Adam optimizer and cross-entropy loss function. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of transfer learning for ISL classification, achieving an accuracy of 97.5 % with VGG16 and 99.8 % with VGG16 plus attention mechanism. • Enabling quick and accurate sign language recognition with the help of trained model VGG16 with an attention mechanism. • The system does not require any external gloves or sensors, which helps to eliminate the need for physical sensors while simplifying the process with reduced costs. • Real-time processing makes the system more helpful for people with speaking and hearing disabilities, making it easier for them to communicate with other humans

Implementation of Hybrid and Secured Solar Street Light System using Arduino

Nowadays solar driven street light are widely used and this trend will be continued. As the solar panels and batteries are costly therefore they are more vulnerable to theft. Accumulation of dirt or particles like dust, sand and moss on the surface of solar photovoltaic panel obstruct the light energy from reaching the solar cells thereby reducing the efficiency of the system. Production of solar energy is low in rainy days. When the street light gets fuse there is no maintenance for many months. To overcome these problems faced by solar street lights, we are proposing use of a hybrid solar street light system with security and maintenance. The system consists of magnetic door contact switch to detect the displacement of solar panel and battery, light dependent resistors to check whether the light is fuse or not. Wipers are used to clear the dust on solar panels. Arduino Uno is used to process the data from the sensors and GSM module is used to provide information to the concerned authority. The system is able to switch to electricity when the batteries are not able to charge

The spectral urban: visualizing the Indian metropolis

    No full text
This dissertation considers literary fiction, graphic narratives, and films from Delhi, Kolkata, and Mumbai, tracing the ways in which their contested histories have found expression in equally conflicted media forms. This multilingual interdisciplinary project attends to the local and global processes that have impacted and transformed the three cities since the neoliberalization of the Indian economy in 1991, which deepened the nation’s desire to create world class cities that fit into a fantasy futurism, and analyzes the ways in which the economic transformation of the national landscape transformed its cultural landscape. Using Indian fiction, film, and graphic narratives as its primary archive, and drawing upon the idea of spectrality to read urban absent-presences that do not make it into the traditional cartographic representations of cities, this dissertation recognizes and preserves images of urban spaces now on the brink of extinction or radical transformation. Through a multimodal reading of the legacies of the past that shape contemporary representation of Indian cities, I propose that the city, continually shape-shifting and mercurial, is marked by its lost or forgotten avatars, which are memorialized through the textual/visual dimension of representations. Since recognizing the lost or forgotten specters are critical to understanding and constituting the contemporary urban, reading the spectralized layer of absent-presences of the marginalized past and unacknowledged present allows for a visualizing of the urban beyond the known and mapped cities.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical reference

Real time Indian sign language recognition using transfer learning with VGG16

Normal people’s interaction and communication are easier than those with disabilities such as hearing and speech, which are very complicated; hence, the use of sign language plays a crucial role in bridging this gap in communication. While previous attempts have been made to solve this problem using deep learning techniques, including convolutional neural networks (CNNs), support vector machine (SVM), and K-nearest neighbours (KNN), these have low accuracy or may not be employed in real time. This work addresses both issues: improving upon prior limitations and extending the challenge of classifying characters in Indian sign language (ISL). Our system, which can recognize 23 hand gestures of ISL through a purely camera-based approach, eliminates expensive hardware like hand gloves, thus making it economical. The system yields an accuracy of 97.5% on the training dataset, utilizing a pre-trained VGG16 CNN optimized by the Adam optimizer and cross-entropy loss function. These results clearly show how effective transfer learning is in classifying ISL and its possible real-world applications
