The effects of oil prices on the price indices in Taiwan: International or domestic oil prices matter?
[[abstract]]This study employs the multivariate threshold model developed by Tsay (1998) to examine the effects of international and domestic oil prices on the price indices in Taiwan using monthly data from January 1999 to December 2011. The results show that changes in domestic oil prices do not Granger cause changes in the price indices when the oil price change exceeds the threshold level. However, international oil price shocks still affect the wholesale price index through the effects of announcement and expectation. Therefore, controlling domestic oil prices to prevent volatility in the price indices is ineffective. If we focus on the period when the left-wing party is in power, we also find that changes in international oil prices have more critical effects on the price indices than changes in domestic oil prices. However, the lead-lag relationship between changes in domestic oil prices and changes in the price indices vanishes except with respect to the transportation category where the consumer price index is affected by domestic oil prices. This result may be due to the government's extensive intervention in setting oil prices. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.[[note]]SC

The asymmetric income effect on household vehicle ownership in Taiwan: A threshold cointegration approach
[[abstract]]This paper uses the asymmetric threshold cointegration test to examine the asymmetric relationship between household income and vehicle ownership in Taiwan, presenting estimated asymmetric error correction models. The empirical data include information on household income, car ownership and motorcycle ownership in different regions from 1974 to 2009. The results show that, first, motorcycle ownership is asymmetrically cointegrated with household income in each region, and car ownership is asymmetrically cointegrated with household income in all regions except Taipei city. Second, both car and motorcycle ownership levels increase faster than they decrease in the asymmetric adjustment of their long-run relationship. Third, sensitivity tests for the period 1987-2009 show that the cointegration relationship of the car ownership equations vanished. Finally, we find evidence on the effects of household income on motorcycle ownership, and the effects of income variables on car and motorcycle ownership are dissimilar. This study exhibits different results across regions. These findings may be related to the development of public transit system in each region. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.[[note]]SC
Hospitalisation costs and duration of elderly motorcyclists non-fatality crashes in Taiwan
[[abstract]]This paper investigates the relationship between medical treatment costs and the length of hospital stays resulting from motorcycle crashes involving the elderly. The World Health Organization defines elderly' as people more than 65 years old. The sample for this study consisted of data for the year 2007 collected by the Bureau of National Health Insurance, Taiwan. We develop models for predicting medical costs and the length of hospital stays based on diagnosis, hospital and user types. The seemingly unrelated regression equation (SURE) model was applied first to investigate the relationship between medical costs and the length of hospital stays. The SURE model shows that the type of injury (e.g. head injury) is statistically significant and has positive effects on medical costs for motorcycle crashes involving the elderly in Taiwan. Due to the statistical insignificance of the dependency between medical costs and length of hospital stays, two separate simple linear regression models were subsequently estimated. For motorcycle crashes, patients over 80 years old had the highest medical costs. The findings reinforce the need for transportation authorities to focus on preventing certain types of injuries that are particularly serious and costly for the elderly in Taiwan.[[note]]SSC
Interactively using Semantic Web knowledge: Creating scalable abstractions with FacetOntology
The amount of knowledge accessible on the Semantic Web is growing, and there is a need for a scalable solution to facilitate exploring that data. Currently approaches to exploring Semantic Web data either focus on exploring resources individually, following links during exploration, and making little use of collated data, or take the approach of collating and aligning multiple sources into one store for one purpose, and hand-crafting a specific browsing interface onto it. We present an approach that provides a scalable browsing interface, which can browse knowledge from the Semantic Web at will. Our approach creates abstractions of knowledge, collated into facets, which are described using FacetOntology. FacetOntology facilitates describing facets from RDF data, suitable for use in creating datasets for faceted browsing
Growth Morphologies and Mechanisms of Non-Equilibrium Solidified MC Carbide
Growth morphologies and mechanisms of the carbide of group IVB and VB elements (MC carbide), a typical faceted crystal, were studied with an estimated cooling rate from 102 to 105 K/s. Results showed that although the growth morphologies of the MC carbide vary remarkably with solidification cooling rate, the solid/liquid interface is always atomically smooth, and the growth mechanisms are always lateral growth. The growth mechanism transition from lateral to continuous growth mode, which was predicted by the classic crystal growth theory, was not observed for the TiC type MC carbide within the estimated cooling rate range of 102?105 K/s
