Born before the end of the last dynasty in China, he received a traditional Confucian education, but was also one of the first Chinese people to be sent to the West for training in modern Western science (under the Boxer Indemnity Fund). The remarkable breadth and scope of his studies included physics, mathematics, linguistics, musical and literary composition, and translation, and he was a pioneer in many of these fields
Lu Chao: Wandering in the Strange
No full textThe essay on Lu Chao is part of a series of encounters within a new wave of young Chinese artists practising in London but also exhibiting in China as well (Lu Chao 'Black Silence') The essay itself utilises some of the writing from the artist's notebook in order that a relationship might be made from the experience of everyday life and aesthetic abstractions. This relationship is on one level related to what is immense and what is small within both contemporary and medieval imaginaries. The work itself mixes several distinct modes of visual language: Classical Chinese landscape art, Japanese Manga comics, Goya's graphical art just to cite a few obvious references but overall it is work that draws whatever the reference into a deep reserve of its own sense. The work plays out this presentation of sense through a series of encounters such as private nightmare and public spectacle, micro and macro scales, and technological and aesthetic and this helps to create a series of figures through which the text is able to weave itself

Le commentaire, Li chao jie lu zhen jie 歷朝捷錄眞解 de Xu Shi-jun 徐士俊, qui est imprimé dans la partie sup. des f. de l'édition chinoise, ne figure pas ici, le traducteur n'en ayant retenu que la liste des empereurs donnée pour chaque dynastie. K. Andermanis ne tikai ir sniedzis ieguldījumu Latvijas etnogrāfijas pētniecībā, bet arī LU simbolu izgatavošanā, kas mūsdienās saglabā savu unikalitāti un vērtību. Meta autora piederība pie LU saimes sakņojusies jau viņa ģimenē, jo viņa tēvs ir absolvējis Rīgas Politehnisko institūtu, LU priekšteci starpkaru periodā, un strādājis LU Saimniecības padomē par inspektoru.The article is a continuation of the September 2024 Museum Object on the Academic Badge of the University of Latvia (UL), which focuses on the author of the UL Academic Badge design, the student of the Faculty of Architecture and local historian, the Baltic German Ksavers Andermanis. K. Andermanis has not only contributed to the research of Latvian ethnography, but also to the production of symbols of the UL, which today retain their uniqueness and value. The author's belonging to the UL family is rooted in his family, as his father graduated from the Riga Polytechnic Institute, the predecessor of UL during the interwar period, and worked as an inspector at the UL Economical council
