    Chara Kieneri, a new species from Nebraska

    This species was named in honor of Dr. Walter Kiener of the Nebraska Game, Forestation, and Parks Commission who collected it and who has collected much other fine material from Nebraska.Although the affinity of Chara Kieneri is most nearly with C. excelsa Allen emend. Robinson, it differs in several ways and is unlike any other Chara known to the author in that the anterior bracts and bracteoles range from the usual unforked condition, through a series showing some forms with a wide base suddenly narrowing, some with a slight projection, some forked with one short arm and one long arm, and finally some forked with almost equal arms

    The herbo mineral preparation Chara parpam was prepared as per the classical way. This drug was subjected to various studies. Chara parpam was selected for this study to establish the protection and efficacy of its Hepatoprotective activity on Kamalai. I was collected the information about the drug, various text books, Literature was referred. From them, the author came to an idea about the drug and its efficacy on Kalleral noi a brief description about modern aspect and Siddha aspect of the mineral Charam and Vediyuppu its identifying characters and Physico – chemical data’s were given. The Physico – chemical analysis shows the precence of Sulphate, chloride, iron, calcium, pottasium. These elements are useful in many metabolic functions of our body. Acute and Subacute toxicological studies show strong evidence of the nontoxic-effect of the Chara parpam. The results showed Chara parpam is safe and explained the extensive utilization of the Siddha medicine. The pharmacological analysis showed that the drug has got significant Hepatoprotective Efficacy. In clinical study, the drug has showed improvement in 60% of cases. The patients were responding well from the beginning of the treatment and no adverse effects were reported. This present study suggests that Chara parpam has remarkable medicinal value against the disease Kalleral noi. CONCLUSION: Chara parpam is a distinctive type medicine, which is made up by a special type of preparation method mentioned in Pathartha guna vilakkam written by S.Kannusami pillai. Literature survey, Physico chemical anatysis, Chemical analysis, was showed the efficacy of charam related to Liver diseases. Juice of Justicia adathoda is also having the traditional usage in treatement of liver diseases. The finding of the pre clinical study suggests that effective role of Chara parpam on liver disease with fatty infiltration of liver with inflammation and hepatic necrosis to cirrhosis. Chara parpam had remarkable effect on lipid with complete reduction in the lipid factors in the liver and its related enzymes. The metalloid drug could play similar role as extracellular calcium and it could evidence effective hepatoprotective drug. Significant efficacy of the drug its human dose prescribed in the siddha literature evidences only therapeutic efficacy rather preventive role. It may be suggested as a drug to fatty liver which finds negligence cure in modern medicine. This can be a definite alternative drug to modern allopathic drug in liver disease. The study reveals the possible mechanism of action on lipid lowering effect with potential anti oxidative role. In clinical trials, the drug shows the significant improvement of 60% in Hepato cellular diseases. Thus the innovative siddha science based Chara parpam had been proved by the modern scientific mechanism as a simple remedy to the complicated metabolic disorder in modern period

    Control interface concepts for CHARA 6-telescope fringe tracking with CHAMP+MIRC

The final version is available from SPIE via the DOI in this record.Cophasing six telescopes from the CHARA array, the CHARA-Michigan Phasetracker (CHAMP) and Michigan Infrared Combiner (MIRC) are pushing the frontiers of infrared long-baseline interferometric imaging in key scientific areas such as star- and planet-formation. Here we review our concepts and recent improvements on the CHAMP and MIRC control interfaces, which establish the communication to the real-time data recording & fringe tracking code, provide essential performance diagnostics, and assist the observer in the alignment and flux optimization procedure. For fringe detection and tracking with MIRC, we have developed a novel matrix approach, which provides predictions for the fringe positions based on cross-fringe information.This work was performed in part under contract with the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) funded by NASA through the Sagan Fellowship Program

Roger Malbert is Head of Hayward Touring at the Southbank Centre, London. He has organised and co-curated many exhibitions and written catalogue essays on artists including Matta, Richard Wentworth and Tacita Dean. He is the author of ‘Drawing People: The Human Figure in Contemporary Art’, published by Thames & Hudson, 2015. Brass Art is the collaborative practice of Chara Lewis, Kristin Mojsiewicz and Anneké Pettican.     Resolving Vega and the inclination controversy with CHARA/MIRC

The final version is available from the publisher via the DOI in this record.Optical and infrared interferometers definitively established that the photometric standard Vega (=α Lyrae) is a rapidly rotating star viewed nearly pole-on. Recent independent spectroscopic analyses could not reconcile the inferred inclination angle with the observed line profiles, preferring a larger inclination. In order to resolve this controversy, we observed Vega using the six-beam Michigan Infrared Combiner on the Center for High Angular Resolution Astronomy Array. With our greater angular resolution and dense (u, v)-coverage, we find that Vega is rotating less rapidly and with a smaller gravity darkening coefficient than previous interferometric results. Our models are compatible with low photospheric macroturbulence and are also consistent with the possible rotational period of ~0.71 days recently reported based on magnetic field observations. Our updated evolutionary analysis explicitly incorporates rapid rotation, finding Vega to have a mass of 2.15+0.10 – 0.15 M ☉ and an age 700–75 + 150 Myr, substantially older than previous estimates with errors dominated by lingering metallicity uncertainties (Z = 0.006+0.003 – 0.002).The CHARA Array is currently funded by the National Science Foundation through AST-1211929 and by the Georgia State University.     This paper focuses on two projects, Still Life No. 1 and Shadow Worlds | Writers' Rooms [Brontë Parsonage], to reveal the creative approaches the authors take to site, technology, and the self in their production of shadow worlds as sites of wonder. Informed by the uncanny (re-animation and the double) and an interest in the limen (thresholds in the real and virtual realms), the projects explore white light and infrared digital 3D scanning technologies as tools for capture and transformation. The authors will discuss how they suture the past with the present and ways that light slips secretly between us, revealing other realms
