Health and war: the memoirs of military hospitals from Minho, Portugal in 1801
This analysis of the military hospitals of Minho in 1801, is based on memoirs written in September of that year by the physician
Bernardo Abrantes Almeida, inspector of the Entre Douro and Minho Army, in the aftermath of the War of Laranjas (War of the Oranges) between Portugal and Spain. After this conflict and foreseeing a new invasion, Portugal sought to audit its available health provision, to properly plan its defences. This report provides an important insight into the existing hospitals in Minho, the patients and the diseases treated in them, as well as the attitude of its author towards the hospitals of Misericórdias and those managed by the Order of São João de Deus. As a defender of the creation of State military hospitals, the author made a number of criticisms of the places of treatment used by the Crown and supplied a new model to treat military personnel.(ID/04509/2020
Turismo académico: um estudo sobre estudantes chineses em mobilidade internacional na Universidade do Minho (Braga/Guimarães)
Dissertação de mestrado em Estudos Interculturais Português/Chinês: Tradução, Formação e Comunicação EmpresarialEste trabalho sobre turismo académico visa investigar o modo como decorreu a experiência de estudantes chineses na Universidade do Minho, os efeitos que estes tiveram no destino e, numa perspetiva mais ampla, noutras regiões próximas, ressalvando a importância de receber feedback dos indivíduos em contexto de mobilidade. Para tal, foi aplicado um inquérito por questionário, em chinês e português, a 66 estudantes chineses que realizaram mobilidade internacional na Universidade de Minho. O tratamento e aná lise dos dados quantitativos foi realizado através do programa Tencent Cloud. Com base nos resultados, a língua, o custo de vida e a recomendação de professores foram os fatores mais importantes conducentes à escolha de Portugal como destino de mobilidade, enquanto a cooperação interuniversitária foi o fator decisivo para a seleção final da Universidade do Minho. Durante o período da estadia, o afluxo destes estudantes chineses trouxe impactos económicos e outros benefícios para as localidades envolventes. As respostas revelam um alto nível de satisfação com a mobilidade na Universidade do Minho: a maioria das estudantes está disposta a recomendar Portugal como destino de mobilidade e turístico. Portanto, sugere-se que as instituições de ensino superior considerem oportunidades estratégicas para se promoverem, quer através da cooperação interuniversitária, quer através de recomendações de ex-alunos.This dissertation about academic tourism aims to investigate how the experience of Chinese students
at the University of Minho took place, the effects they had on the destination and, from a broader
perspective, on other nearby regions, highlighting the importance of receiving feedback from individuals
in a mobility context. To this end, a questionnaire survey was applied, in Chinese and Portuguese, to 66
Chinese students who undertook international mobility at the University of Minho. The quantitative data
processing and analysis was carried out using the Tencent Cloud software.
Based on the results, language, cost of living and teacher recommendation were the most important
factors leading to the choice of Portugal as a mobility destination, while inter-university cooperation was
the decisive factor for the final selection of the University of Minho. During the mobility period, the influx
of these Chinese students brought economic impacts and other benefits to the surrounding localities. The
responses reveal a high level of satisfaction with the mobility at University of Minho: most students are
willing to recommend Portugal as a mobility and tourism destination. Therefore, it is suggested that higher
education institutions consider strategic opportunities to promote themselves, either through inter university cooperation or through recommendations from former students.本篇关于学术旅游的论文旨在调查中国学生在米尼奥大学的留学经历是如何发生的、
他们对目的地和附近其他地区有何影响,以及收集有流动经历的学生反馈的重要性。

Professor Pimenta Claro (1957-2018): Pioneer in dynamics of mechanical systems at the University of Minho
This work highlights the importance of Professor Pimenta Claro in the genesis and development of a new scientific area at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Minho, namely Dynamics of Mechanical Systems. Professor Pimenta Claro initiated his academic career in October 1980, coming from industry, where he was a well-recognized engineer in the field of mechanical design. Professor Pimenta Claro concluded his Pedagogical Aptitude and Scientific Capacity Tests (PAPCC) – MSc equivalent – in 1987, with dissertation title “Estudo Comparativo das Previsões Teóricas do Desempenho de Chumaceiras Radiais Hidrodinâmicas com Resultados Experimentais”. Professor Pimenta Claro received his doctorate degree in 1994 with thesis “Reformulação de Método de Cálculo de Chumaceiras Radiais Hidrodinâmicas – Análise do Desempenho Considerando Condições de Alimentação” under the mentorship of Professor Sousa Miranda, which was in fact the first PhD in Mechanical Engineering defended at the University of Minho. In 1997, Professor Pimenta Claro broken with his past background – classical tribology – to open a new research domain – Dynamics of Mechanical Systems. Since then, Professor Pimenta Claro has coordinated and participated in several scientific projects both with national and international partners, as well as projects with industrial partners. Professor Pimenta Claro was author of numerous publications, including scientific papers, books, conference papers, etc., and supervised PhD and MSc students. From 2007 to 2013 he coordinated the research group called Dynamics of Mechanical Systems. Professor Pimenta Claro was also pioneer and responsible for the creation of new courses on dynamics of mechanical systems offered in different degrees at the School of Engineering of the University of Minho. Thus, the main purpose of this work is to highlight Pimenta Claro’s contributions to the vast scientific area of Dynamics of Mechanical Systems at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Minho
Problemas e perspectivas do Quaternário do litoral minhoto a norte do rio Lima
E apresentado um primeiro balanço dos estudos levados a cabo sobre as formações quaternárias do litoral do Minho (Portugal), compreendidas entre a foz do rio Minho e a foz do rio Lima. Duas formações marinhas situadas respectivamente a 3-5 m e a 11-15 m foram identificadas. Depósitos coluvionares e eólicos revelando a existência de condições climatéricas rigorosas (gelifração, geliturbação e eolização) foram igualmente detectados sobre aqueles mesmos níveis. No caso particular da jazida de S. Domingos, as características sedimentológicas dos depósitos sugerem a possibilidade da existência de uma formação paleo-lagunar.
Um primeiro estudo tecnico-tipológico incidindo sobre materiais líticos acheulenses e de tipo “asturiense” é igualmente efectuado.L'auter présente un premier bilan des recherches effectuées sur les dépôts quaternaires du litoral du Minho (Portugal), entre l'embochure du fleuve Minho et celle du fleuve Lima. Deux dépôts marins, étagés respectivement à 3-5 m et 11-I5 m ont été reconues. Des formations colluvialles et éolliennes révélant des conditions climatiques froides (gélifraction, éolisation et cryoturbation) ont été identifiées sur ces mêmes niveaux. Dans le sites de S. Domingos. Les caractéristiques sédimentologiques des dépôts suggèrent la possibilité de l'existence des dépôts paleo-lagunaires.
Un premiér étude techno-typologique portant sur des industries acheuléennes et de type «asturien» est également présentée.The author presents the first results concerning new researches on the Quaternary of the littoral of Minho (Portugal). Two high sea-level deposits, localized at 3-5 m and 11-15 m have been identified. Colluvial and eolion deposits, contemporaneous with cold climatic conditions (cryoclastism, cryoturbation and wind facetted pebbles) are superimposed on the two sea terraces. At the site of S. Domingos, sedimentary characteristics of the deposits suggest the existence of a paleo-lagoonar formation.

Entrepreneurial intention in university students: a study with engineering students at the University of Minho
Dissertação de mestrado em Engenharia Industrial (especialização em Gestão Industrial)O conceito de empreendedorismo é muito complexo, pois o seu conteúdo pode variar consoante a
localização e o autor, isto devido às fortes contribuições oriundas da psicologia e da sociologia que o
termo empreendedorismo recebeu. Na prática o empreendedorismo é definido como o processo pelo
qual os indivíduos iniciam e desenvolvem os seus negócios. É um fenómeno complexo que envolve o
empreendedor, a empresa e o cliente. Existe uma crescente preocupação em promover o
empreendedorismo, com vários países, incluindo Portugal, motivados e “open-minded” às ideias de
negócio e ao aparecimento de programas de apoio aos empreendedores, para fomentar a criação e
consolidação de iniciativas inovadoras. A definição da dissertação surgiu de dois objetivos: em primeiro
lugar conhecer o perfil empreendedor dos estudantes de engenharia da Universidade do Minho e em
segundo lugar, avaliar o efeito da educação para o empreendedorismo na intenção empreendedora
sugerido pelo artigo de Barba-Sánchez e Atienza-Sahuquillo (2018). Nesse sentido, foi desenvolvido um
questionário designado por Projeto Estudo IEENG, posteriormente implementado junto de estudantes de
Engenharia da Universidade do Minho entre abril e maio de 2021. No estudo participaram 328
estudantes de engenharia da Universidade do Minho. Este trabalho de investigação permitiu concluir
que, contrariamente aos resultados obtidos no artigo base de Barba-Sánchez e Atienza-Sahuquilo (2018),
não foram encontradas evidências do papel da educação para o empreendedorismo na intenção
empreendedora. Na presente dissertação, conclui-se que a intenção empreendedora destes estudantes
de engenharia é determinada pelo Índice de preferência por negócio próprio, e de dois fatores
motivacionais: a necessidade de reconhecimento e a necessidade de autoafirmação manifestadas pelo
estudante.The concept of entrepreneurship is very complex, as its content may vary depending on the location and
the author, this due to the strong contributions from psychology and sociology that the term
entrepreneurship has received. In practice, entrepreneurship is defined as the process by which
individuals start and develop their businesses. It is a complex phenomenon that involves the entrepreneur,
the company and the customer. There is a growing concern to promote entrepreneurship, with several
countries, including Portugal, motivated and “open-minded” to business ideas and the emergence of
support programs for entrepreneurs, to encourage the creation and consolidation of innovative initiatives.
The definition of the dissertation arose from two objectives: firstly, to know the entrepreneurial profile of
engineering students at the University of Minho and secondly, to evaluate the effect of entrepreneurship
education on entrepreneurial intention suggested by the article by Barba-Sánchez and Atienza- Sahuquillo
(2018). In this sense, a questionnaire called the IEENG Study Project was developed, later implemented
with engineering students at the University of Minho between April and May 2021. 328 engineering
students from the University of Minho participated in the study. This research work allowed us to conclude
that, contrary to the results obtained in the base article by Barba-Sánchez and Atienza-Sahuquilo (2018),
no evidence was found of the role of entrepreneurship education in entrepreneurial intention. In the
present dissertation, it is concluded that the entrepreneurial intention of these engineering students is
determined by the preference index for their own business, and by two motivational factors: the need for
recognition and the need for self-affirmation expressed by the student
