This essay attempts to highlight and explore Bob Chang\u27s implicit disclaimers for an Asian American legal scholarship situated within post-structuralism: that it is contingent, ironic, and yearns for a chimerical solidarity, these qualities should not lead to the conclusion that his claims lack positive vision, the narrative space that Chang advocates allows for creative articulations of Asian presence in America, in both theoretical and practical realms. Thus, after considering the nature of the misunderstanding between Chang and Chen, the author will turn briefly to one example of positive articulation-the diaspora perspective-and read it into Jim Chen\u27s text

On the cult of Chang San-feng and the authenticity of his works

    Get PDF
Chang San Feng was a Taoist master who Has honoured by the Taoist inclined Emperors T'ai-tsu (reigned 1368--1398), Ch'eng-tsu(reigned 1403-1424) and Ying-tsung (reigned 1436-1449, 1457-1464) of the Ming dynasty, The first two emperors dispatched delegates to invite him to court, but he never Pesponded to imperial invitation. Many legends were woven around him and he was transmuted into an immortal. As his biography in the Ming-shih remarks, no one knew when he died. It is also problematic whether he was a historical figure or not. This thesis is an attempt to reveal the true facts about this noted Taoist. This study consists of two parts. The first part, an examination and review of the biographical accounts of Chang San-feng as found in important historical compilations, local histories of the Ming dynasty and literary notes written by Ming authors, reflects the evolution of his biography from one of the earliest extant records, which was written during the Hsuan-te reign (1426-1435), to its inclusion into the Ming-shih, and reveals the discrepancies existing in many records, Evidence is cited to prove that some sayings concerning Chang San-feng are unfounded. By making use of comparatively reliable biographical accounts and analysing the records relating to the imperial search for Chang San-feng, which is a historical fact, it is argued that it is possible that Chang San-feng was a historical figure. Also, the dates of one of the disciples of Chang San-feng, and the discontinuation of Emperor Ch'eng-tsu's search for the Taoist, lead to the deduction that Chang San-feng lived approximately between the Yen-yu period (1314-1320) and 1419, Part II of this thesis is an investigation into the authenticity of the Chang San-feng ch 'Uan-chi, the complete works attributed to Chang San-fengo Nany ser'ious discrepancies existing in these works have been cliscover·ed, namely, the appearance of historical persons and mention of historical facts in periods remote from the time when Chang San-feng was believed to have flourished, anti-Taoist overtones, resentment against Emperor Ch'eng-tsu, a sentiment incapable of finding expression in the time and milieu of Chang San-feng dnd anachronistic use of terms and names of places current during the Ch'ing period. All these serve to betray that these works are spurious, and chat they were forged or produced from planchette writing by Ch'ing Taoist devotees. Such clues also indicate that some of them were written by an unknown author in late Ming period To sum up Chang San-feng was not the author of these works

    Tetrichina Chang et Chen 2020

Genus Tetrichina Chang et Chen, 2020 Tetrichina Chang et Chen in CHANG et al. 2020 b: 39. Type species: Tetrichina trihamulata Chang et Chen, 2020, by original designation. Lunatissus Meng, Qin et Wang in ZHANG et al. 2020: 496, syn. n. Type species: Lunatissus brevis Che, Zhang et Wang, 2020, by original designation. Notes. The presence of the peculiar moon-shaped processes of the dorsolateral lobes of the phallobase and the distinct process below the neck of capitulum of style in the species of Tetrichina and Lunatissus (CHANG et al. 2020 b, figs 35, 38, ZHANG et al. 2020, figs 222e, 222h, 223e, 223h) leave no doubt about the identity of these genera; therefore, their subjective synonymy is hereby proposed. According to the structure of the phallobase Tetrichina is closely related to the monotypical genus Yangissus Chen, Zhang et Chang, 2014 known from Guizhou (CHEN et al. 2014), but the latter is well distinguished by the presence of furcate ventral aedeagal hooks (CHEN et al. 2014, fig. 2-82M). The genus Tetrichina is apparently endemic to Hainan Island. The date of publication of the work of CHANG et al. (2020 b) is indicated in the first page of the article as 6th August, 2020. Thus, Tetrichina has priority over Lunatissus. A comparison of the drawings of the male genitalia of Tetrichina and Lunatissus species in the original publications of CHANG et al. (2020 b), WANG et al. (2020), and ZHANG et al. (2020) revealed the synonymies listed below.Published as part of Gnezdilov, Vladimir M., 2022, New Synonymies And New Combinations For Chinese Issidae (Hemiptera: Auchenorrhyncha: Fulgoroidea), pp. 45-52 in Acta Zoologica Academiae Scientiarum Hungaricae 68 (1) on pages 48-49, DOI: 10.17109/AZH.68.1.45.2022, http://zenodo.org/record/716070

The peculiar ventral lobe of the phallobase (narrow basally, but strongly enlarged before apex), the dorsolateral lobes of phallobase being provided with large semicircular processes ventrally covering ventral aedeagal hooks, and the massive styles, without neck, but with a comb before capitulum dorsally, clearly illustrated by both author groups (CHANG et al. 2019, figs 25, 27, 28; ZHANG et al. 2020, figs 224e, 224h, 224i), leave no doubt that the two genera are identical, therefore their subjective synonymy is hereby proposed, resulting in the following new combination:
Published as part of Gnezdilov, Vladimir M., 2022, New Synonymies And New Combinations For Chinese Issidae (Hemiptera: Auchenorrhyncha: Fulgoroidea), pp. 45-52 in Acta Zoologica Academiae Scientiarum Hungaricae 68 (1) on page 49, DOI: 10.17109/AZH.68.1.45.2022, http://zenodo.org/record/7160706</a&gt
