The Chêng-tzŭ-t’ung (正字通) is a large Chinese Dictionary compiled after the Tzŭ-hui (字彙) Dictionary of the Ming Dynasty and before the K’ang-hsi (康煕) Dictionary of the Ch’ing Dynasty. According to the writer’s preliminary conclusion reached in an earlier study (ZHONGGUO YUWEN, September, 1992, pp. 339-351), the fan-ch’ieh (反切) spellings of the Chêng-tzŭ-t’ung dictionary reflect the scholarship pronunciation of the Kan (贛) dialect in the 17th century. In order to make effective use of this dictionary as a source for research of phonological and dialectal history of the Chinese language, it is necessary to research the life of the compiler and the development of the dictionary. Early in the K’ang-hsi years of the Ch’ing Dynasty, many people already knew that the real author of the Chêng-tzŭ-t’ung was Chang-Tzŭ-lieh (from Yi ch‘un (宜春) in Chiang-hsi (江西) province), and that Liao Wên-ying (廖文英) published the dictionary under his own name after having purchased Chang’s original manuscript. In this article the writer presents his findings on the lives of Chang and Liao respectively and calls attention to several new facts as follows:1. Chang compiled a dictionary called Tzŭ-hui-pien early in Ch’ung-chên (崇禎) years of the Ming Dynasty (approximately 1642 A. D.). The writer thinks this dictionary probably developed into later Chêng-tzŭ-t’ung.2. Chang published the Tzŭ-hui-pien sometime in the 1650s.3. Chang and Liao were on friendly terms during their lifetimes. Chang knew of Liao’s publication of the Chêng-tzŭ-t’ung before his death.4. The rhymes of Chang’s classical poems reflect the dialectal features that the writer has found in the fan-ch’ieh spellings of the Chêng-tzŭ-t’ung.journal articl
