Nepaletricha mystica Chandler, 2002 Nepaletricha mystica Chandler, 2002: 122. Discussion. N. mystica was described from Nepal on the holotype male only (in MNHN) and has not been reported since. The species is very similar to N. furcata and it agrees in most respects with the description of that species given here. The distinguishing characters are discussed under N. furcata. The dentata species-group Tergite 1 without dorsal tubercles or apical emargination, apex protruding at middle, tergite 2 relatively simple, without deep sulci; three species. One with modified antennae, but different antennomeres are involved when compared with the cavicornis species-group. Species included are: B. dentata (Say), B. lareaui Chandler sp. n., and B. tamaulipec Sabella sp. n. The abdominalis species-group Tergite 1 with apical lobes widely separated by distinct emargination; tergite 2 strongly modified, with deep basal sulcus. Species included are B. abdominalis (Aubé), B. belfragei (LeConte), B. floridana (Brendel), B. intermedia (Brendel), B. shawnee Chandler sp. n., and B. ulkei (Brendel). Chandler, sift rotten wood, 2 females.</p> <p> <b>Etymology.</b> Named after our friend and colleague Aleš Smetana, who collected some type specimens of this new species. Aleš inspired an entire new generation of rove beetle specialists in North America and contributed to rove beetle knowledge worldwide.</p> <p> <b>Diagnosis.</b> Externally it is barely distinguishable from <i>C. brendeli</i> (Casey), but with long series of specimens at hand it was observed to be consistently black, rather than dark brown as is <i>C. brendeli</i>, and slightly broader than the latter species with the abdomen more swollen (Fig. 11a). The shape of the aedeagus differs as follows: tubus of median lobe of aedeagus is unique with apical part narrow in lateral view and with two very elongate structures roughly sculptured on surface and extending from base of tubus to beyond apex of median lobe (Fig. 11b); female sternite VIII sharply convergent apically and its narrow apex is truncate or slightly emarginate (rounded apically and notched medially in <i>C. brendeli</i>) (Fig. 11f), stem of spermatheca with multiple coils (Fig. 11g), and only broadly looped in <i>C. brendeli</i>. The narrow shape of apical part of tubus will distingish this species from all others described from northeastern North America.</p> <p> <b>Description.</b> Body length 3.6–3.9 mm, colour dark brown to black with appendages partially or entirely reddish, body shape distinctive (Fig. 11a). <b>Male</b>. Tergite VIII with apical margin truncate, with small median emargination, antecostal suture distant from basal margin (Fig. 11d); sternite VIII triangularly produced apically (Fig. 11e); tubus of median lobe of aedeagus in lateral view with ventral margin broadly arcuate, with apex very narrow in lateral view (Fig. 11a); internal sac with two very elongate structures roughly sculptured on surface and extending from base of tubus beyond apex of median lobe, and two small subapical structures (Figs. 11a,b). <b>Female</b>. Tergite VIII with apical margin truncate, with minute median emargination, antecostal suture distant from basal margin (Fig. 11f); sternite VIII narrowly produced apically and its narrow apex is truncate or slightly emarginate (Fig. 11g); spermatheca with capsule small, spherical, stem with multiple irregular coils (Fig. 11h).</p> <p> <b>Distribution.</b> Nearctic. <b>USA</b>: NC, NH, PA.</p> <p> <b>Collection and Habitat data.</b> The type specimens were captured from May to August in litter on spring edges, leaf litter along pond, moss on rocks in stream, <i>Sphagnum</i> in mist zone of waterfall, and in rotten wood. Collected by sifting litter from April to September.</p> <p> <b>Comments</b>. Lareau, UV lt./ [red label] HOLOTYPE Brachygluta lareaui Chandler (FMNH). Description. BODY: Length 2.60 mm; orange-brown; setae on head and pronotum short, curved and suberect, depressed to appressed over rest of body. Head: surface smooth, shining, punctures indistinct. Setose area of median vertexal fovea slightly smaller than those of lateral vertexal foveae. Antennomere form treated below under male characters. Pronotum: surface opaque due to light microreticulation, punctures indistinct; setose area of median antebasal fovea about two-thirds width of those of lateral antebasal foveae. Elytra: surface lightly microreticulate, punctures indistinct. Discal stria extending to about four-fifths of elytral length. Abdomen: tergite 1 with surface shining, punctures small but distinct. Basal striae of tergite 1 elongate, extending about one-third paratergite length, striae separated at base by about one-half tergal width, setal brush between bases of striae sparse but distinct. MALE: Antennae relatively elongate, antennomere III longer than wide, IV as long as wide, V–VI enlarged, V dorsoventrally flattened, in dorsal view IV about two-thirds width of V, in lateral view IV about three-fourths width of V, VI as wide as IV, roughly cylindrical and longer than wide, VII clearly longer than wide, VIII slightly longer than wide, IX–X elongate, both about half again as long as wide (antennomeres X–XI of right antenna partially fused) (Fig. 17 A). Metaventrite with apical half at middle slightly impressed, setae slightly denser in impression than laterally. Lacking modifications of trochanters, ventral margins smooth. Tergite 1 with apex protruding blunt medial angulation; margin of angulation extending above tergite 2, with row of setae ventrally longest at middle, area of tergite 2 ventral to angulation with setae short and appressed (Figs 16 A–B); in lateral view tergite 1 horizontal, apex deflexed, tergite 2 flat and nearly level, well-separated from 2 (Fig. 16 C). Abdominal ventrites 2–6 flattened medially. Metatibiae narrow at base, evenly thickening to middle and then narrowing slightly to apex, apical third of metatibiae straight, with thick setal comb on mesal margin in apical fifth (Fig. 17 B). Aedeagus 0.46 mm long; with dorsal plate narrowly triangular, apex acutely pointed; parameres with three small thin setae at posterior margin of preapical constriction, hyaline setae large, broadly flattened, widest at middle and gradually tapering to acute point; internal sac with two large and one small spines, one large spine strongly curved (Fig. 17 C). FEMALE: Unknown. Collecting data. The holotype was collected at ultraviolet light. Distribution (Fig. 39 B). Only known from South Carolina near the Atlantic coastal salt marshes. Comments. This is a distinctive species in that the male antennae are modified, while the abdominal tergal modifications are typical of the dentata species-group. The antennomeres are all elongate except for swollen antennomere V, which is a pattern not found in any other New World species, where VIII is always transverse or about as long as wide, and IX–X are never so clearly elongate. The bluntly angular apex of tergite 1 is close in form to that of B. dentata, but the medially swollen metatibiae and modified antennae readily separate B. lareaui from this and all other species. Etymology. Sobolev spaces on non-Lipschitz subsets of with application to boundary integral equations on fractal screens
We study properties of the classical fractional Sobolev spaces (or Bessel
potential spaces) on non-Lipschitz subsets of . We investigate
the extent to which the properties of these spaces, and the relations between
them, that hold in the well-studied case of a Lipschitz open set, generalise to
non-Lipschitz cases. Our motivation is to develop the functional analytic
framework in which to formulate and analyse integral equations on non-Lipschitz
sets. In particular we consider an application to boundary integral equations
for wave scattering by planar screens that are non-Lipschitz, including cases
