    Insolvency law: the humane approach of classical Islamic jurisprudence

    The Islamic finance industry continues to be characterized by uncertainty over how it will deal with individual as well as corporate insolvency. As a result, interest in this area of law is growing. To this end, Islamic insolvency law is emerging as an independent field of study. Being a legal exploratory study using the library method, this study aims to highlight some of the humane principles that should inform a framework for the industry. The author made an attempt to trace back these humane principles to the primary and secondary sources of Islamic jurisprudence. In addition, the author has attempted to focus on the specific legal differences between Islamic and civil law in terms of insolvency. The outcome of this study emphasizes the need for policy makers to focus on both the substantive, and procedural rules of Islamic Banking and Finance. It further highlights that Islamic financial instruments need to properly be geared towards dealing with default or default-like situations and that community resources need to be channeled towards the development of dispute resolution mechanisms

    The emergence of Islam banking and finance has refocused attention on Islamic transactions and commercial laws. Islamic Mommercial Law is a timely and welcome addition to the growing literature on the subject. it is the first book in English to introduce all the essential contracts on Islamic commerce and finance in one volume. The author also incorporates diagram, examples, and questions that offer a better understanding of the various commercial and financial transactions. This makes the book an important text and essential reading for the undergraduate and postgraduate students and for all those who work in Islamic financial institutions.     'Conversion of African Americans to Islam: A Sociological Analysis of the Nation of Islam Associated groups' is an empirical study of the religious experience of people who had/have distinctive features in terms of race, ethnicity and historical experience. The purpose of this thesis is to demonstrate how African Americans' (AAs) conversion experience in general, and the Nation of Islam associated groups' conversion in particular, differ from the studies of recruitment and conversion in the sociology of religion and New Religion Movements (NRMs). More specifically, their recruitment and conversion experiences to Islam diverge from those who converted to mainstream Islam. The study investigates how AAs' historical experience, soci-economic difficulties and the racism they encountered shaped and influenced their religious understanding. Research methods involved participant observations, a survey questionnaire, interviews, conversations, personal communications and correspondence. To collect ethnographic data eleven months field research was conducted mainly in the Chicago area and on two short visits to Detroit, and three years continued communications with Muslim officials and academics in the area. During the field research and afterwards through personal communication 181 survey questionnaire responses were received, and 23 Muslim officials, academics and ordinary Muslims were interviewed through semi-structured, unstructured interviews, conversation and correspondence. The thesis begins with a brief history of Islam and Muslims in general and the African American Muslims (AAMs) in particular. More emphasis is given on the historical development of the Nation of Islam (NOl). Then in Chapter III, discussions of schisms in the history of the NOT are examined from sociological perspectives of social and religious movements. In Chapter IV I aimed to formulate my own perspective to analyse and study the conversion experiences of AAMs to Islam. I used a multivariate approach, considering selectively widely held conversion and recruitment theories in the sociology of the religion. I consider in Chapter V the predisposing conditions for AAMs that influence their decision-making to join in the NOT, for example, political and nationalistic sentiments and socio-economic deprivations. In Chapter VI I have applied different terms to describe their religious experiences, such as conversion, alteration and reversion. I have analysed further their encounters with the NOT, the methods of recruitment they used and their major motives for joining the NOT and converting to Tslam. In the concluding chapters (Chapter VII VTTT) I describe the different responses of AAMS to Islam following the death of Elijah Muhammad. It is found out that the Islamic appeal has polarised. While Farakhan's NOT appeared to continue the tradition and style of the old NOI with the emphasis on nationalistic and socio-economic factors, Tmam W. D. Mohammed's community turned more to the religious and spiritual aspects of Tslam. These different approaches led to a polarisation of the appeal of Tslam to AAMS. This thesis contributes to knowledge in four key areas; the sociology of religion and religious movements, the sociology of social and nationalistic movements, religious and Islamic studies

    Dynamically Reconfigurable Fault-Tolerant Design of r-VEX Softcore Processor

    Over the past many years, technology scaling has resulted in a continuous reduction of lateral and vertical dimensions of transistors. The technology scaling, on the one hand, has led to a commensurate performance gain for very-large-scale integration (VLSI) circuits, but on the other hand, has also made such circuits more vulnerable to ionizing radiations which can cause single event effects(SEEs). These SEEs may cause the underlying user circuitry to deviate from its normal behavior. Devices that are destined for space missions need special protection for such kind of anomalies as space environment is filled with massive amount of high energy particles and ionizing radiations. In this thesis, the design, implementation, and verification of a fault-tolerant r-VEX, a softcore processor, is presented, so that it could be used as an attractive alternative to expensive radiation-hardened processors for space-based applications. r-VEX is a VLIW based, dynamically reconfigurable processor. Keeping in line with its inherent attribute, a dynamically reconfigurable fault-tolerant mode is presented in this work, which provides the running application an option to activate and deactivate the fault-tolerant mode multiple times. In this mode, for the protection of processor pipeline, a non-traditional TMR approach that requires 3 lanegroups running in 2-way mode is implemented. For the reliability of user memories, Hamming codes are implemented as an ECC coding scheme. The functionally of our fault-tolerant design is verified by using both a simulation-based platform (ModelSim) and an on-board FPGA platform (ML605 development kit). To measure the fault-tolerant capabilities of the r-VEX core, saboteurs are used to artificially inject faults at various predefined locations in the core. The obtained results have shown that our design can mitigate all injected single faults in the pipeline and double faults in the caches, without triggering any failure. The dynamically configurable fault-tolerant feature is obtained at the cost of about 30% additional resource utilization and 20% reduction in the maximum operating frequency

    Pure water and energy production through an integrated electrochemical process

    In this study, an electrochemical integrated process was developed that integrates a three-pass capacitive deionization (CDI) with capacitive donnan potential (CDP) for water and energy production. Energy required to operate the desalination process CDI was partially fulfilled through the use of CDP process, which in turn reduced the use of fossil fuel energy sources and the CDI brine disposal. Electrochemical process integration with a novel three-pass desorption method increased the water recovery and energy production. Results indicated that almost 95.7% water desalinated and salinity power gradient were produced through the provided design methodology. Performance evaluation graphs revealed that the concentration gain ratio and water recovery were increased up to 20 and 96%, respectively, with the increase in desorption current to 15 A. In addition, 1.4 kJ L-1 energy consumption for water production without process integration was reduced to 0.35 kJ L-1 through the implementation of the proposed system.This work was supported by the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF) grant funded by the Korean Government (MSIP) (2014R1A2A2A01006899).
