De dood vanuit ethisch perspectief
No full text• De ethiek rond sterven, de dood en (on)geoorloofd doden is mettertijd sterk veranderd door de epidemiologische transitie en door de ontwikkeling van life-support-technologie.
• Nieuwe definities van de dood hebben vragen opgeworpen naar wat leven nu eigenlijk waardevol maakt en in welke mate de dood een kwaad is, in het bijzonder voor leven ‘aan de marges’.
• Twee theorieën over het ‘kwaad’ van de dood staan tegenover elkaar. Experiëntiële theorieën focussen op de dood als de negatieve ervaring van het stervensproces. Deprivatieve theorieën wijzen daarentegen op wat men verliest of ontnomen wordt aan mogelijkheden door niet (meer) te leven.
• De ‘goede dood’ is een multifactorieel concept. Hoewel er een grote overlap is in welke factoren de betrokken partijen belangrijk vinden, zijn er aanzienlijke verschillen in de rangorde en interpretatie ervan. De visie van de stervende zelf kwam maar langzaam in zicht.
• De formulering van euthanasiewetgeving wereldwijd geeft artsen de toelating om op stervensverzoeken in te gaan en in alle vrijheid in gesprek te gaan met hun patiënten over de dood. Die wetgeving verleent patiënten geen autonoom recht op euthanasie.
• Euthanasiewetgeving is verbonden met het idee van waardig sterven. Zelfwaarde krijgt daarin meer gewicht dan zelfbepaling. De ziekte en de behandeling ervan tasten die zelfwaarde aan.
• Ethische alternatieven voor ‘direct’ doden, zoals de Doctrines van het Dubbel Effect en van Doen en Laten, zijn reacties op euthanasie. Zij leggen de nadruk op de correcte intentie van de arts. Het is echter een misvatting dat de intentie de medische exceptie op het doden (juridisch) rechtvaardigt
