The Protection of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Armed Conflict: Dissolving the Boundaries Between the Existing Legal Regimes?
No full textThe themes of measures of cultural heritage protectionand the accountability of perpetrators of crimes against culturalheritage in armed conflict have been receiving growing attentionin international fora and international scholarship. The applicablelaw for the protection of cultural heritage in times of conflict isthe 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Propertyin the Event of Armed Conflict and its two Protocols; however,the protection that this body of rules provides to intangible culturalheritage (as opposed to tangible cultural heritage) is questionable.This paper seeks to critically present the intersection of the 2003Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritagewith other international legal regimes, especially the norms of the1949 Geneva Conventions and their Additional Protocols and humanrights law, with the aim of establishing that intangible culturalheritage enjoys legal protection in all phases of an armed conflict.3210913

Σε παγκόσμιο επίπεδο, ο ΟΗΕ, έχει υιοθετήσει σειρά στρατηγικών για την εξάλειψη του φαινομένου.Σε περιφερειακό επίπεδο, η Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση και το Συμβούλιο της Ευρώπης, δυο διαφορετικοί διακυβερνητικοί οργανισμοί, έχουν κινηθεί δυναμικά προκειμένου να εγκαθιδρύσουν ένα νομικό, θεσμικό και επιχειρησιακό πλαίσιο ποινικοποίησης και εξάλειψης του φαινομένου της βίας εις βάρος των γυναικών και της ενδοοικογενειακής βίας. Αν και οι προσπάθειες αυτών των δυο οργανισμών έχουν διαφορετική αφετηρία, τόσο χρονολογικά όσο και εννοιολογικά, σήμερα οι δράσεις και οι νομικές και πολιτικές πράξεις των δυο οργανισμών συνθέτουν ένα πολυδιάστατο πλαίσιο αντιμετώπισης της ενδοοικογενειακής βίας και της βίας εις βάρος των γυναικών. Counterterrorism Policy and Legislation in Greece
No full textGreece’s geopolitical position in the heart of the Mediterranean hasoffered a base for terrorist activity since 1960s. Greece’s counterterrorismgeographic challenge lies in the fact that it is a mountainous countrysurrounded by numerous sparse islands and located between Albania,FYROM, Bulgaria, Turkey, and North African countries. For decades,the combination between the geography of Greece and the lax bordercontrols has allowed for various terrorist activities by both internationaland domestic organizations. During the 1960s it was reported that terrorist agents associated with middle-eastern terrorist organizations wereoperating or receiving training and logistical support in Greece (Ciment2015). From 1970s, homegrown terrorism emerged as a new threat toGreek and foreign interests and has been a long-standing issue for Greekgovernments; the recent arrest and trial of members of the infamous"17 November" group shed light into the inefficiencies of the legal framework and lack of policy initiatives in the fields of both prevention andrepression. However, counterterrorism legislation and policies in Greecehave been fast evolving since 2000. The WPS Agenda in the Eastern Mediterranean: The Cases of Greece, the Republic of Cyprus and Turkey
No full textThe implementation of the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) Agenda, despite its globalprominence, has been slow in the Eastern Mediterranean. This article is aimed at examining howthree neighbouring states in the Eastern Mediterranean, namely: Greece, the Republic of Cyprus and Turkey, have responded to the normative traction of the WPS agenda. It is not only theirgeographic proximity that have rendered a comparative analysis of the three countries importantbut also the ongoing tensions that Greece and Cyprus experience at different times with Turkey.An evaluation of the three countries’ standing regarding the promotion of the WPS agenda willshed light on the missed opportunities that a substantive commitment to the WPS would haveoffered, especially in the context of conflict prevention and peacebuilding. Cyprus adopted in2020 its first WPS National Action Plan while Greece finalised its first WPS National Action Plan(NAP) in 2021 and awaits its official adoption. Turkey is yet to adopt a NAP despite its deterioratingwomen’s rights record. The article evaluates the perspectives that both Greece and Cyprus haveadopted in their NAPs and assesses Turkey’s perspectives on gender equality. Through a contentanalysis with the support of respective secondary literature, the article highlights the unexplored,and thus missed, opportunities that a substantive implementation of the WPS normative settingswould have offered in a region suffering from tensions, power competition and revisionism.81578

A civil war, which has a catalytic effect on the wider region of the Middle East, and wants to take up this issue, which is very important by itself. During the dissertation, information was collected about the Syrian state in general, its relations with neighboring countries, and in particular how we came to this civil war and the aspirations of the country's president through this ongoing conflict. The data were collected from the international articles in official journals, newspapers and various other websites, evaluated and processed and we came up with what is considered the most important and will be the main body of the conclusions. The dissertation also analyzes the establishment of ISIS during this conflict and the impact this caliphate had to the region. Lastly, the response of United Nations and the efforts that were made to resolve the crisis is highlighted
