Social media and the Arab Spring
In late of 2010 and during 2011, the Arab countries saw a series of large scale political uprisings. Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and other forms of social media have played a major role in the planning, acceleration, and even the preparation of some of the uprisings and revolutions that too place in the Middle East at this time. Social media was employed effectively to awaken the Arab people and to mobilize them to fight against repressive regimes in their drive for greater freedom and independence. This paper will discuss the cause of the uprisings. In addition, the role of social media in the Middle East before the revolutions and the impact it had on the uprisings and revolutions known as the Arab Springs will be examined.M.A.L.S.Includes bibliographical referencesby Samira F. Global burden of paediatric vision impairment: a trend analysis from 1990 to 2017
OBJECTIVE: To assess the trend of paediatric visual impairment and its disparities by year, sex, age and national socioeconomic levels using disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). METHODS: It is a retrospective analysis of data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2017. Global and national DALY numbers and rates of vision impairment in three paediatric age groups of 1–4 (preschool children), 5–9 (school children) and 10–14 years (teenagers) years were obtained from the GBD 2017 database. The socioeconomic indices for 195 countries were derived from international open databases. Main outcome measures were comparison of DALYs due to paediatric vision impairment in different age groups by socioeconomic indicators in 2017 and analysis of the trend from 1990. RESULTS: The global prevalence of distance and/or near vision impairment for 1–14 years was 2.8% (95% uncertainty interval (UI): 2.5–3.1) in 2017. The highest DALYs for distance and/or near vision impairment [number=589.93 thousands (95%UI: 367.71–933.29), rate = 92.72 (95%UI: 57.79–146.68)] were observed in teenagers. DALY rate of distance and/or near vision impairment was not associated with socioeconomic indicators, however, DALY rate of refractive disorders had positive correlation with national socioeconomic development. The global trends of DALY numbers in distance and/or near vision impairment as well as refractive and other causes remained stable from 1990 to 2015 (0.128 ≤ P ≤ 0.738), however, DALY rates had a statistically significant trend of reduction in all paediatric age groups (0.003 ≤ P ≤ 0.024). CONCLUSION: The global health burden of paediatric vision impairment decreased from 1990. Refractive, near vision impairment and other causes were associated with socioeconomic development
The Poetics of Textual Thresholds in Ahcene El-Kharrat’s Collections of Poetry
Abstract: The aim of this study is to analyze the poetics of textual thresholds in the poetry of Ahcene El-Kharrat (1989-2019), to query their various dimensions, connotations and artistic features, based on the assumption that contemporary poetic text is no longer just a set of poems nicely written and collected in a book, but rather a mosaic of written texts, para (meta) texts, and thresholds related to their hypertext. The thresholds’ role is vital. Its importance cannot be ignored while formulating the general poetic context of the poem. The latter cannot reach completeness without its textual thresholds that opens up new poetic and artistic perspectives. We will shed light, in this analytical and intertextual research, on the thresholds of the poems in the collections of the Algerian poet Ahcene El-Kharrat entitled: Nabdh-al-faji’a (Pulse of Bereavement), Basar Al-Turab (Sight of the earth) and Shatah Al-darawishes (the Dervishes’ imagination).

Electron–hole superfluidity in strained Si/Ge type II heterojunctions
Excitons are promising candidates for generating superfluidity and Bose–Einstein condensation (BEC) in solid-state devices, but an enabling material platform with in-built band structure advantages and scaling compatibility with industrial semiconductor technology is lacking. Here we predict that spatially indirect excitons in a lattice-matched strained Si/Ge bilayer embedded into a germanium-rich SiGe crystal would lead to observable mass-imbalanced electron–hole superfluidity and BEC. Holes would be confined in a compressively strained Ge quantum well and electrons in a lattice-matched tensile strained Si quantum well. We envision a device architecture that does not require an insulating barrier at the Si/Ge interface, since this interface offers a type II band alignment. Thus the electrons and holes can be kept very close but strictly separate, strengthening the electron–hole pairing attraction while preventing fast electron–hole recombination. The band alignment also allows a one-step procedure for making independent contacts to the electron and hole layers, overcoming a significant obstacle to device fabrication. We predict superfluidity at experimentally accessible temperatures of a few Kelvin and carrier densities up to ~6 × 1010 cm−2, while the large imbalance of the electron and hole effective masses can lead to exotic superfluid phases.QCD/Scappucci La
Considering the Effect of Hydro Alcoholic Extract of Capsella Bursa Pastoris on Menorrhagia
Abstract
Background: Heavy menstrual bleeding has a negative impact on quality of life. In this study, the effect of hydroalcoholic extract of capsella bursa pastoris on menorrhagia is evaluated.
Materials and Methods: This clinical trial was carried out on 90 women with complaint of heavy menstrual bleeding. Samples, after a control cycle of primary bleeding, were randomly divided to capsella bursa pastoris and control groups. Both groups were subjected to mefenamic acid treatment with 500 mg every 8 hours, from the first day to the end of bleeding, up to seven days, for two consecutive cycles. In capsella bursa pastoris group, in addition to mefenamic acid, capsella bursa pastoris capsule 500 mg every12 hours, from the first day to the end of bleeding, up to seven days, was prescribed. In control group, instead of capsella bursa pastoris capsules,it,s placebo was prescribed with the same order. Data were checked and compared before and after treatment using SPSS software.
Results: The average amount of bleeding reduced in capsella bursa pastoris group from 135.27 in control cycle to 69.13 in third cycle and in control group reduced from 133.91 to 75.44 in third cycle(p<0.001). The average duration of bleeding was reduced in capsella bursa pastoris group from 7.38 in control cycle to 5.40 in third cycle and in control group was reduced from 6.91 to 5.31 in third cycle(p<0.001).
Conclusion: It seems that the extract of capsella bursa pastoris can be effective in reducing the amount and duration of bleeding in women of reproductive age with heavy menstrual bleeding
The impact of lacrimal gland characteristics on the clinical presentation of lacrimal gland prolapse in candidates for upper eyelid blepharoplasty
Abstract Background lacrimal gland prolapse (LGP) is a rare yet significant condition in oculoplastic surgery, characterized by the downward displacement of the lacrimal gland leading to upper eyelid bulging. This study aimed to understand LGP’s defining characteristics and clinical implications for accurate diagnosis and tailored treatment planning. Methods The research, enrolled 496 candidates for upper eyelid blepharoplasty. Initially, all patients underwent an examination in an upright position to identify lateral eyelid bulging, the “supine test” was then performed. Surgical exploration was carried out for those with a positive supine test. Measurements of gland prolapse length and thickness were recorded, with glands classified based on thickness (thin < 2 mm vs. thick ≥ 2.5 mm). Dacryoadenopexy was performed to secure prolapsed glands using non-absorbable sutures, followed by skin closure. Results The average age of 48.39 years predominantly comprising females. Findings revealed an incidence of LGP around 22%. Patients with LGP were significantly younger than those without, suggesting evolving aesthetic demands. The supine test demonstrated a 90% positive predictive value for LGP. Analysis of the prolapsed lacrimal gland characteristics indicated that the average length in patients with upright prolapse was significantly larger (8.33 ± 3.12 mm) than in those without (6.03 ± 2.91 mm, p = 0.001). The odds ratio analysis revealed that each millimeter increase in gland length correlates with a 29% increased likelihood of upright eyelid bulging (OR: 1.29, 95% CI: 1.106–1.509, p = 0.001). However, the thickness of the gland and the presence of superotemporal pre-aponeurotic fat did not significantly influence the clinical manifestation of LGP. Conclusion This study challenges existing assumptions about LGP by revealing a higher incidence, particularly among younger individuals, indicative of evolving aesthetic demands possibly influenced by social media. The supine test proves valuable for LGP assessment. Gland characteristics, especially length, significantly impact clinical manifestation, underscoring the need for tailored approaches. Surgeons should navigate LGP diagnosis and treatment with precision, considering both gland and fat prolapse for comprehensive care and aesthetic results. Clinical trial number Not applicable
