La teoria dell’inferenza causale di David Hume dal punto di vista della cibernetica di secondo ordine

    No full text
This article offers a contribution to a cybernetic interpretation of Hume’s theory of causal inference and expounds the importance of such theory as one of the first modern forms of internalization of cognitive phenomena, by explaining why for the Scottish philosopher causality should no longer be seen as metaphysical quality but rather as construction of the mind, according to its capacity to co-ordinate self- and hetero-reference and to structure the outcome of that coordination in the form of a cognitive memory

Punteggiare la comunicazione e comunicare la punteggiatura

    No full text
The purpose of this article is to examine the effects of the printing revolution on the ways in which writers shaped the communicativeness of their own texts. The manuscript culture of classical and medieval times had accustomed readers to use texts which had been written according to rules for abbreviation and punctuation devised and customised by different intellectual communities following standard rhetorical precepts, such as the advice to divide the text up into shorter sections in order to make it easier to memorise. Printing on the other hand resulted in the need for texts which were sufficiently autonomous for use among an anonymous readership. The transition led to the replacement of an ‘aural’ system of punctuation with a ‘visual’ one; at the same time the development encouraged the composition and publication of punctuation manuals which thus closed, so to speak, the circle of communication created by printing

    The Memory of Tags

    No full text
In the last twenty years, indexing systems have undergone a profound transformation that has been dubbed social tagging or folksonomy. The aim of this article is not to furnish instructions about the best way to tag library resources. Instead, the aim here is to consider the activity of tagging from a more abstract standpoint, that is, from the social memory viewpoint. As a first priority, therefore, this article deals with the function performed by tagging, i.e. how social access to information is organised. After a brief discussion of social memory, three core issued are taken into consideration: first, the function performed by tagging; second, the feedback cycle which is triggered by the interplay of users and the machine; third, tags do not inform about the contents of library resources, they inform about what users think the contents of library resources are. The last question to be tackled by this article is whether any correlation with the evolution of social memory can be discerned in the procedures of tagging and, if so, what does the evolutionary advantage of the activity of social tagging comprise

    Introduzione [Conoscenza come costruzione]
