Acne RA-1,2, a novel UV-selective face cream for patients with acne: Efficacy and tolerability results of a randomized, placebo-controlled clinical study
Background: General skincare measures such as the use of moisturisers and products containing adequate photoprotection are important components of acne patients' management to complement the pharmacological regimen. Acne RA-1,2 is a novel dermato-cosmetic product which contains selective photofilters and active ingredients against the multifactorial pathophysiology of acne. Objectives: To evaluate the tolerability of Acne RA-1,2 and its effect on the clinical signs of acne. Methods: This double-blind, placebo-controlled study randomized 40 adult patients with 10-25 comedones per half face to once-daily application of Acne RA-1,2 or placebo for 8 weeks. Evaluations after 4 and 8 weeks included the number of comedones, transepidermal water loss (TEWL), sebum production, and tolerability. Results: In the Acne RA-1,2 group, there was a significant 35% decrease in the mean number of comedones from 26 at baseline to 17 at Week 8 (P<.001), a 7% significant reduction in TEWL (9.32 to 8.66 g/h/m2; P<.001), and a 24% significant reduction in sebum production (154.8 to 117.6 μg/cm2; P<.001). The reductions in TEWL and sebum production were significantly greater than those in the placebo group at Weeks 4 and 8 (P<0.05). There were no adverse events. Conclusions: Acne RA-1,2 was well tolerated and effective at reducing comedones and sebum production and improving epidermal barrier function. Mycosis fungoides in childhood: description and study of two siblings.
Primary cutaneous T-cell lymphomas are exceedingly rare in children and adolescents. However, mycosis fungoides (MF) is the most frequent primary cutaneous lymphoma diagnosed in childhood. Two cases of MF in siblings (a 14-year-old boy and his 10-year-old sister) are reported. On the basis of clinical features (histopathological and immunophenotypical findings) a diagnosis of MF patch lesions was made in both siblings. Since recent data in the literature have underlined a high frequency of the HLA-DQB1*03 allele in patients with familial MF (including child patients), the HLA profile of the patients was analysed, indicating the presence of a haplotype (HLA-DQB1*03,*03 in the girl, HLA-DQB1*02,*03 in the boy) corresponding with that described in recent literature. Reactive oxygen species have been implicated in age-related skin disorders. Dietary bioactive antioxidant compounds, such as polyphenols, have beneficial effects on skin health. The advantage of a nutritional administration route is that blood delivers nutraceutical bioactive compounds continuously to all skin compartments, ie, the epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous fat. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the topical and systemic effects of a dietary supplement containing resveratrol and procyanidin on age-related alterations to the skin, the skin antioxidant pool, and systemic oxidative stress levels.Methods: An instrumental study was performed in 50 subjects (25 treated with supplements and 25 with placebo) to identify clinical features induced by chronoaging or photoaging. Product efficacy was evaluated after 60 days of treatment in terms of in vivo and in situ skin hydration, elasticity, and skin roughness levels, systemic oxidative stress levels by plasmatic derivatives of reactive oxygen metabolites and oxyadsorbent tests, and extent of the skin antioxidant pool.Results: After 60 days of treatment, values for systemic oxidative stress, plasmatic antioxidant capacity, and skin antioxidant power had increased significantly. Additionally, skin moisturization and elasticity had improved, while skin roughness and depth of wrinkles had diminished. Intensity of age spots had significantly decreased, as evidenced by improvement in the individual typological angle.Conclusion: Nutraceutical and pharmacological intervention with a supplement characterized by a specific blend of resveratrol and procyanidin may be a promising strategy to support treatments for the reduction of skin wrinkling, as well as reducing systemic and skin oxidative stress.Keywords: antiaging, nutraceuticals, procyanidin, resveratrol supplementation, ski
Effective Use of Nonablative Fractional Laser on Multiple Whip Scars
Background: Laser technology provides different solutions for scar treatment from the traditional ablative lasers to the more recent fractional devices. Patients and methods: We present the case of a young woman treated for scars induced by severe whipping since the age of 10. She received four monthly nonablative fractional 1550 nm erbium glass laser treatments. Fluence used was 20 mJ/cm2 with 1500 microthermal zones/cm2. Results: Significant improvement was documented in the color and texture of the lesion at the end of treatment and at follow-up. Treatment had no major side effects and was well tolerated. This essay shows how the London-born Anglo-Nigerian author Bernardine Evaristo contributes, with her Soul Tourists (2005), to deconstructing modern European nationalist and racially exclusivist models by means of anti-essentialist representational strategies. Centred around the voyage by car and across Europe which, in the late eighties, leads two black Britons, Stanley Williams and Jessie O’Donnell, from England to the Middle East, the novel becomes an imaginative vehicle through which Evaristo represents the black presence as intrinsic to Europe since the th century and foregrounds the substantial contribution of black and mixed-race men and women to the cultural development of Western civilisation
Transience
Transience presented the work of an exceptional group of women artists from migrant and refugee backgrounds. Merlinda Bobis, Jigzie Campbell, Lella Carridi and Vincenza Fazzalori, Ok-Hean Chang, Mehwish Iqbal, Helen Kassa, Hiromi Tango, My Le Thi, Yumi Umiumare and Sivan Gabrielovitch have been participating in a community research project Art/Hope/Culture: Empowering Women’s Art and Culture that explored the impact of intercultural mobilities and resettlement on their art and their art making processes. Researchers Anne Harris and Enza Gandolfo have engaged in dialogue with the artists and documented these in a series of short films (included in the exhibition along with the artwork) that celebrate, explore and promote the artists’ work and valuable contributions to Australian art and cultural life. The artworks represent a range of disciplines including film, visual arts, performance, literature and multi-modalities. The exhibition was held at the Footscray Community Arts Centre in March 2014 and opened by author Alice Pun

Multiscale Analysis on the Behaviour of a Lime Treated Bentonite
AbstractAn insight into the microstructural evolution of clay-lime-water systems and its influence on the hydro-mechanical behaviour of treated bentonite has been presented. The time-dependent mineralogical and microstructural changes induced by lime addition on a natural bentonite have been investigated in order to provide a better understanding of the kinetic of the ongoing reactions. The effects of lime addition on the clay particle arrangements have been inferred from dynamic light scattering measurements, whereas the mineralogical changes have been monitored at increasing curing time by X-Ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis. The bentonite showed a high initial reactivity characterized by a rapid and total consumption of lime, which promoted the formation of new hydrated phases since the very short term (0 days of curing). Oedometer tests on not treated and lime stabilised saturated samples have been performed at increasing curing times. The results showed the combined effect of clay particles arrangement and bonding on the mechanical behaviour of treated samples
