Baldassarre Peruzzi tra rilievo e progetto dell’antico. Baldassarre Peruzzi Between Survey and Design of Antiquities
The essay highlights the moments of professional collaboration between Baldassarre Peruzzi (1481-1536) and Giovanni da Udine (1487-1561), especially in that short period of time usually summed up with the expression “Leo X Golden Age”, when they shared in Rome the same artistic and cultural environment. The essay then focuses on the material and immaterial tools with which Peruzzi relates to the Antico, focusing the attention on some technical and practical aspects of his professional practice, that can be obtained from the material analysis of the drawings, such as the survey techniques with the compass, the graphic transposition of the survey carried out in the field, or the scale keys, the figures and the units of measurement adopted. Many of the techniques, methods, and conventions, partly still in use today, were born and affirmed at this very moment, thanks to the small circle of actors who collaborated with Raphael in his numerous assignments, including the grandiose project of reconstruction of ancient Rome
rilevante e tuttavia mai approfondita in modo sistematico.
The article investigates the role and the work of the architect Giulio Podesti (1842-1909) on the scene of “Roma Capitale”, when the city was
declared capital of the Italian state. Mainly known for the project of the polyclinic Umberto I, during those years Podesti played a leading role
and he had a prolific career, alongside Gaetano Koch, Giuseppe Sacconi, Pio Piacentini and many others. His production was copious, especially
about residential buildings for the expansion of Rome. The essay focuses firstly on Podesti’s work within AACAR and secondly on the decidedly
little-known project for the Botanical Garden of Rome in the park of Palazzo Corsini alla Lungara, in the aftermath of its insertion in this
place, in 1883. Podesti, who was one of the founding members of AACAR, had an active role within it, participating numerous commissions
organized by the members regarding relevant issues of the current debate. Exemplifying, he was a member of the commission for the profession of
architect, of the commission promoting an exhibition on the XX century architecture, and of the commission for the development of the Schools
of Architecture. Moreover, after the purchase by the State of the Corsini palace and garden, on the direct interest of Quintino Sella, to insert in
the palace the Academy of Sciences and the Botanical Garden, Podesti was engaged in the re-arrangement of the building, and this is the aspect
most illustrated in the paper, in the construction of the building to be used as the gardener’s and director’s residence, including the greenhouse
placed next the Botanical Garden, in 1888-1889
Recensione al libro "Venice Disputed: Marc’Antonio Barbaro and Venetian Architecture, 1550–1600" di Deborah Howard (New Haven – London 2011)
Antonio Brucculeri's dense volume is dedicated to the interpretation of the Italian Renaissance by French architects between the second half of the 18th century and the first half of the 19th century, with important effects at least until the end of the century. Published as the fourth volume in the series 'European Identities and Transcultural Exchange. Studies in Art History', perfectly embodies its intentions: to discuss the migration of knowledge, ideas, artistic and technical expressions, but also lifestyles, and the mutual cultural exchange between local traditions and imported models in a progressive reworking of prototypes
Ulteriori considerazioni
This paper is the second part of a contribution to this same editorial collection, published in 2019. It is devoted to the construction of Ca’ Donà dalle Rose in Venice, between 1610 and 1612. This was the palace that Doge Leonardo Donà had chosen to build as his family house. From an analysis of the building site accounts (receipts and account books) housed in the private family archives, as well as – contemporary treatises from the Veneto region, and – comparisons with a few other sporadic sources, it’s been possible to piece together in detail the construction techniques and materials used to build the palace. In an overall reconstruction of the evolution of the Donà building site this paper concentrates on the masonry, plastering, guttering and flooring. The research has cleared up some previously unanswered questions and furnished some new details about building construction in Venice in early modern times. It also shows how this type of research can broadly enrich the history of architecture, with useful contributions to interpreting the reasoning behind the choice of patrons
