Alte Ceccato. Una banglatown nel nordest

    No full text

When time worsens framing: a longitudinal analysis of the psychological effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in women with an eating disorder and their healthy sisters

The COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly affected individuals with eating disorders (ED), leading to an exacerbation of symptoms worldwide in 2020. However, there is a lack of longitudinal analyses of the psychological burdens experienced by this population. This study aims to longitudinally assess the psychological effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in people with ED and their healthy sisters (HS) 1 and 2 years after the onset of the crisis. A sample of 148 individuals, consisting of 73 with ED and 45 HS, was evaluated in spring 2021 and spring 2022 regarding their current psychological and behavioral states. Participants were also asked to reflect on their feelings and behaviors during the 2020 lockdown. General psychopathology, eating disorders, and trauma-related symptoms were evaluated using validated questionnaires. Both groups showed an overall improvement in psychopathological symptoms with time. Individuals with ED exhibited greater improvement compared to their HS, which may be attributed to their initially higher burden. Individuals with ED reported a negative reframe, characterized by internalizing negative emotions and behaviors related to the 2020 lockdown. This longitudinal evaluation revealed two distinct and contrasting effects. Both ED patients and their HS demonstrated psychological improvement over time. However, people with ED experienced a negative reframe that affected their memory of specific life events, subsequently affecting their psychological well-being. These findings shed light on the clinical severity observed in people with ED during these pandemic years

Sensory-motor conduction time in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

    No full text
19 ALS patients were submitted to motor evoked potentials (MEP) and F-wave from thenar muscles. Somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP) from median nerve were recorded as well in 16 patients. MEP were bilaterally absent in 4 patients (21%) and monolaterally absent in 6 patients (3.6%). Among patients with recordable waves, MEP and F-wave were significantly delayed. Their upper motor neuron conduction time was clearly abnormal only in one case. In SEP recordings the N9-N13 was significantly delayed, but the N13-N20 was normal. Four patients showed a combined sensory-motor dysfunction (increase of both N19-N13 interval and F-wave latency)

The Preoperative Paradoxical GH Response to Oral Glucose Load Predicts a low Risk of Recurrence in Acromegaly

Context A paradoxical growth hormone (GH) response to oral glucose load (oral glucose tolerance test [OGTT]) in acromegaly is associated with a milder phenotype. Objective To study whether the GH response to the OGTT predicts the risk of recurrence after initial surgical cure. Methods Retrospective, observational study at 2 tertiary care centers. We investigated 254 patients with acromegaly who were cured by surgery. All patients underwent an OGTT at diagnosis before pituitary surgery. A peak to basal GH ratio >= 120% within 90 minutes was used to distinguish paradoxical (GH-Par) from nonparadoxical responses (GH-NPar) in patients with acromegaly. Cox analysis was used to investigate whether the paradoxical GH response to OGTT was associated with the risk of disease recurrenceResults A paradoxical GH response to OGTT occurred in 87 patients (34.3%, termed GH-Par group). Recurrence of acromegaly occurred in 3 patients in the GH-Par group (3.4%) and in 20 patients in the GH-NPar group (12.0%). In the multivariate analysis, the paradoxical GH response to OGTT was significantly associated with a low risk of recurrence (HR 0.18, 95% CI 0.05-0.63; P = .007). Basal GH level at diagnosis was the only other variable associated with the risk of disease recurrence (HR 1.58, 95% CI 1.01-2.47; P = .04).Conclusion Our study demonstrates that a paradoxical GH response to OGTT in the preoperative setting predicts a lower risk of disease recurrence after initial surgical cure. The pattern of GH responsiveness to OGTT is, therefore, useful to predict the long-term outcome of patients with acromegaly

Predictive Stadium Attendance Using Machine Leaning: A Case Study in Italian Football

Football is one of the most widely followed sports in Italy, and football clubs have now become fully-fledged businesses. In this context, it is of utmost importance to be able to predict match attendance. In this work, we propose a two-phase framework. In the first phase, through a survey containing a conjoint analysis, we will be able to identify fan preferences related to certain match attributes, such as weather, start time, and the day of the week on which the game is played. From the responses we gather, we will create a variable called “utility”, which is then included in the second phase, represented by the development of ML models with the aim of predicting stadium attendance. We have evaluated this approach in collaboration with an important Italian football Team playing in the first division, using historical data for the training and testing phase. Moreover, we have also applied the proposed methodology to a match of the current season (2023-24). Generally, we can say that the proposed framework performs quite well, allowing us to predict stadium attendance in advance
