Social Robots and Wearable Sensors for Mitigating Meltdowns in Autism - A Pilot Test
Young individuals with ASD may exhibit challenging behaviors. Among these, self-injurious behavior (SIB) is the most devastating for a person’s physical health and inclusion within the community. SIB refers to a class of behaviors that an individual inflicts upon himself or herself, which may potentially result in physical injury (e.g. hitting one’s own head with the hand or the wrist, banging one’s head on the wall, biting oneself and pulling out one’s own hair). We evaluate the feasibility of a wrist-wearable sensor in detecting challenging behaviors in a child with autism prior to any visible signs through the monitoring of the child’s heart rate, electrodermal activity, and movements. Furthermore, we evaluate the feasibility of such sensor to be used on an ankle instead of the wrist to reduce harm due to hitting oneself by hands and to improve wearable tolerance. Thus, we conducted two pilot tests. The first test involved a wearable sensor on the wrist of a child with autism. In a second test, we investigated wearable sensors on the wrist and on the ankle of a neurotypical child. Both pilot test results showed that the readings from the wearable sensors correlated with the children’s behaviors that were obtained from the videos taken during the tests. Wearable sensors could provide additional information that can be passed to social robots or to the caregivers for mitigating SIBs
Origins of human communication: development of linguistic element in the gestural communication system
M.Phil.Studies in recent decades have indicated that a homesign system exhibits morphological and syntactic structures found in natural languages (Feldman, Goldin-Meadow, & Gleitman, 1978; Goldin-Meadow, 2005a; Goldin-Meadow, Mylander, & Franklin, 2007). However, these studies examined the development of language structures over a period of time (e.g., a year). The question remains whether those language structures can emerge when the communication system is created on the spot. Past studies have shown that, silent gestures, the improvised communication form invented on the spot by hearing speakers of different languages, are found to have consistent syntactic orders representing motion events (Goldin-Meadow, So, Özyürek, & Mylander, 2008). The present study examines whether there are any language properties in silent gestures produced by speakers of different languages. Specifically, we focus on language properties including form-meaning mapping at a word level, syntactic structure, and grammatical devices for negation and questions. We apply the linguistic analysis used in previous studies on homesign to the rudimentary gestural communication system created on the spot, and find that the ad hoc gestural communication system also displays some of the language properties assumed in the homesign system. Yet, we also observed inconsistent patterns among different language properties. Our findings imply that different language properties may not all be structured instantly, with some (e.g., forms or lexicons) taking a longer time to be systematized than others (e.g., syntactic orders). Gestural learning in children with autism
Ph.D.Communication impairment is one of the core features in autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and the effectiveness of spoken language interventions may be limited for individuals with ASD. Therefore, it is important for individuals with ASD to acquire augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) skills. Gesture is a natural and convenient method of communication which may compensate for the low verbal ability in children with ASD.The present study aimed to investigate the impairment in gestural skills in children with ASD compared to typically developing (TD) children, as well as to examine the role of imitation and prior knowledge in the gestural learning process of both children with ASD and TD children. In study 1, a narrative task was conducted in which children were asked to look at six cartoon pictures and then retell the story freely. The results of Study 1 revealed that the children with ASD had impaired gestural skills. Specifically, compared to the TD children, the children with ASD produced fewer gestures and had lower gesture rates. In addition, they produced fewer emblems and supplementary gestures.In Study 2, a gestural intervention was conducted in which 20 target gestures were taught. Compared to the TD children, the children with ASD showed poorer gestural skills, in terms of both gestural recognition and production, before the intervention. However, the children with ASD learned as well as the TD children during the intervention and acquired comparable skills with respect to the target gestures. We found that consistent prior knowledge benefited gestural learning in both groups. In addition, we found interactions between group (ASD and TD) and gesture type, group and imitation, and group and inconsistent prior knowledge. Specifically, we found that the TD children, but not the children with ASD, learned iconic gestures better than emblems and had better learning outcomes if they imitated better during the intervention. Also, only the children with ASD were hindered by inconsistent prior knowledge: If they had already acquired another form of the target gestures, their learning was poorer. These findings suggested that the children with ASD had a learning advantage in a structural setting with explicit goals and instructions. We also found that consistent prior knowledge helped to ease, while inconsistent prior knowledge possibly distracted, their learning process. The evolution of citizenship education in nation-building in Singapore and Hong Kong
Citizenship Education is a highly political agenda for politicians and governments, especially those of the emerging nations studied in transitology. Political circumstances that surround the birth of ล nation are inextricably tied up with the unique economic, social and even globalisation contexts that shape the formation of that particular nation. Citizenship education mirrors the political climate of such circumstances. A ruling government's policies and ideologies are often transmitted to the masses through education in the form of citizenship education in its evolving forms that take after the political orientations of the nation. A historical-comparative study of Singapore and Hong Kong is the focus of the thesis and a combined case in point. This historical-comparative approach presents a chronological and qualitative analysis of Singapore and Hong Kong that links the past to the present, and points to future direction on how citizenship education has transformed in its focus, dimensions, content, message and values. Theories of nationalism, nation-state and national identity provide a basis for the understanding of the political, economic and social factors that impact nation- building and the subsequent evolvement of Civic and Moral Education in Singapore and Hong Kong after independence. In an analysis of the content-domain of citizenship education, Singapore’s curriculum is shown to reflect the ruling party's ideologies infused through National Education, where the Singapore story is sacrosanct and has to be mastered by all students so that the continual survival instinct is preserved at ill times. Hong Kong covers more breadth with a curriculum that includes the history of China that can be taught critically and a Chinese cultural heritage element that is infused into all the Key Learning subjects. The Life Event Approach is also more practical and relevant to the students' appreciation of the more individual-growth values learnt. Singapore is identified as an Objective/Globalised nation-state with a parallel Objective/Globalised National Identity that has a predominantly strong political leadership and economic priority in its nation-building foundation. It recognizes the need to rise up to the global challenges ahead. Hong Kong has a combination of Objective/Subjective/Globalised region-state with a parallel Objective/Subjective/Globalised National Identity with China due to its cultural heritage component inherited from China and also the need to meet global challenges. The thesis demonstrates how education can be used as a channel to serve the ideologies of the politicians who have a direct stake in shaping the focus of the political content in citizenship education in building national identity. It also illustrates how the respective political circumstances, economic reasons, social contexts and globalisation challenges drive the evolvement of the citizenship education in both Singapore and Hong Kong
The Socio-Economic Causes of Obesity
An increasing number of Americans are obese, with a body mass index of 30 or more. In fact, the latest estimates indicate that about 30% of Americans are currently obese, which is roughly a 100% increase from 25 years ago. It is well accepted that weight gain is caused by caloric imbalance, where more calories are consumed than expended. Nevertheless, it is not clear why the prevalence of obesity has increased so dramatically over the last 30 years. We simultaneously estimate the effects of the various socio-economic factors on weight status, considering in our analysis many of the socio-economic factors that have been identified by other researchers as important influences on caloric imbalance: employment, physical activity at work, food prices, the prevalence of restaurants, cigarette smoking, cigarette prices and taxes, food stamp receipt, and urbanization. We use 1979- and 1997-cohort National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (NLSY) data, which allows us to compare the prevalence of obesity between cohorts surveyed roughly 25 years apart. Using the traditional Blinder-Oaxaca decomposition technique, we find that cigarette smoking has the largest effect: the decline in cigarette smoking explains about 2% of the increase in the weight measures. The other significant factors explain less.
Aikidō and spirituality: Japanese religious influences in a martial art
This thesis examines spirituality in the Japanese martial art aikidō, which was created in the 1940s in Japan by Ueshiba Morihei. He described aikidō entirely in spiritual terms and claimed that it is an art of peace which leads religion to completion. The study has two aims: first, to show how spirituality, defined as ultimate concern and action directed towards it, is possible in the context of a martial art; second, to gain an overview of the original teaching of Ueshiba Morihei which has been fragmented and often misunderstood since his death. After considering some conceptual hindrances to appreciation of spirituality in the martial arts, the main themes of Japanese spirituality are identified in order to provide context for spirituality in aikidō. An analysis of Ueshiba's life and the evolution of aikidō is then given. Spirituality in this martial art is then evaluated by comparing the aikidō world view and method of practice with those of four religious belief systems influential in Japan: Daoism, Zen Buddhism, Shingon Mikkyō and Shinto. The research entailed reading and analysing primary and secondary documents concerning aikidō in several languages scattered in private archives and libraries, as well as discussion with a member of the Omoto organisation, consultation of library resources and quality internet sites. By positioning aikidō within a religious context, this work aims to provide a clearer understanding of the origins of aikidō in Japanese spirituality and the intent of its founder. In so doing, it hopes to contribute to removing some of the confusion which has surrounded this art's role as spiritual technique since it spread outside Japan
Guidelines for the use and interpretation of assays for monitoring autophagy (4th edition)
2929siIn 2008, we published the first set of guidelines for standardizing research in autophagy. Since then, this topic has received increasing attention, and many scientists have entered the field. Our knowledge base and relevant new technologies have also been expanding. Thus, it is important to formulate on a regular basis updated guidelines for monitoring autophagy in different organisms. Despite numerous reviews, there continues to be confusion regarding acceptable methods to evaluate autophagy, especially in multicellular eukaryotes. Here, we present a set of guidelines for investigators to select and interpret methods to examine autophagy and related processes, and for reviewers to provide realistic and reasonable critiques of reports that are focused on these processes. These guidelines are not meant to be a dogmatic set of rules, because the appropriateness of any assay largely depends on the question being asked and the system being used. Moreover, no individual assay is perfect for every situation, calling for the use of multiple techniques to properly monitor autophagy in each experimental setting. Finally, several core components of the autophagy machinery have been implicated in distinct autophagic processes (canonical and noncanonical autophagy), implying that genetic approaches to block autophagy should rely on targeting two or more autophagy-related genes that ideally participate in distinct steps of the pathway. Along similar lines, because multiple proteins involved in autophagy also regulate other cellular pathways including apoptosis, not all of them can be used as a specific marker for bona fide autophagic responses. Here, we critically discuss current methods of assessing autophagy and the information they can, or cannot, provide. Guidelines for the use and interpretation of assays for monitoring autophagy (4th edition)
In 2008, we published the first set of guidelines for standardizing research in autophagy. Since then, this
topic has received increasing attention, and many scientists have entered the field. Our knowledge base
and relevant new technologies have also been expanding. Thus, it is important to formulate on a regular
basis updated guidelines for monitoring autophagy in different organisms. Despite numerous reviews,
there continues to be confusion regarding acceptable methods to evaluate autophagy, especially in
multicellular eukaryotes. Here, we present a set of guidelines for investigators to select and interpret
methods to examine autophagy and related processes, and for reviewers to provide realistic and
reasonable critiques of reports that are focused on these processes. These guidelines are not meant
to be a dogmatic set of rules, because the appropriateness of any assay largely depends on the question
being asked and the system being used. Moreover, no individual assay is perfect for every situation,
calling for the use of multiple techniques to properly monitor autophagy in each experimental setting.
Finally, several core components of the autophagy machinery have been implicated in distinct autophagic processes (canonical and noncanonical autophagy), implying that genetic approaches to block
autophagy should rely on targeting two or more autophagy-related genes that ideally participate in
distinct steps of the pathway. Along similar lines, because multiple proteins involved in autophagy also
regulate other cellular pathways including apoptosis, not all of them can be used as a specific marker for
bona fide autophagic responses. Here, we critically discuss current methods of assessing autophagy and
the information they can, or cannot, provide. Our ultimate goal is to encourage intellectual and technical

Guidelines for the use and interpretation of assays for monitoring autophagy (4th edition)
none2929sìIn 2008, we published the first set of guidelines for standardizing research in autophagy. Since then, this topic has received increasing attention, and many scientists have entered the field. Our knowledge base and relevant new technologies have also been expanding. Thus, it is important to formulate on a regular basis updated guidelines for monitoring autophagy in different organisms. Despite numerous reviews, there continues to be confusion regarding acceptable methods to evaluate autophagy, especially in multicellular eukaryotes. Here, we present a set of guidelines for investigators to select and interpret methods to examine autophagy and related processes, and for reviewers to provide realistic and reasonable critiques of reports that are focused on these processes. These guidelines are not meant to be a dogmatic set of rules, because the appropriateness of any assay largely depends on the question being asked and the system being used. Moreover, no individual assay is perfect for every situation, calling for the use of multiple techniques to properly monitor autophagy in each experimental setting. Finally, several core components of the autophagy machinery have been implicated in distinct autophagic processes (canonical and noncanonical autophagy), implying that genetic approaches to block autophagy should rely on targeting two or more autophagy-related genes that ideally participate in distinct steps of the pathway. Along similar lines, because multiple proteins involved in autophagy also regulate other cellular pathways including apoptosis, not all of them can be used as a specific marker for bona fide autophagic responses. Here, we critically discuss current methods of assessing autophagy and the information they can, or cannot, provide.
