Molecular genetic investigation of left ventricular outflow tract obstruction
No full textLeft Ventricular Outflow Tract Obstruction (LVOTO) is a significant subtype of Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) with these lesions accounting for 14% of all CHD. The associated mortality and morbidity associated with these lesions is significant with severe cases frequently fatal. Although a multifactorial aetiology for LVOTO has been proposed, there are multiple strands of evidence to suggest that LVOTO is in at least some cases monogenic. The use of chromosomal abnormalities such as balanced translocations is a recognised tool in the identification of disease genes. A patient was identified with LVOTO in association with a de novo balanced translocation, 46,XY,t(14;15)(q23;q26.3) dn and the regions surrounding the breakpoints on both chromosomes were considered candidate loci for a causative gene. Investigation of the breakpoints by FISH and by mapping of the breakpoint on derived chromosome 14 showed that NR2F2, a transcription factor with a role in development, was interrupted by the translocation. However, sequencing of NR2F2 in 112 DNA samples from patients with isolated LVOTO failed to show any additional mutations. Due to the possibility of a position effect, additional genes up to 2 Mb from the breakpoints were considered candidate genes and the mRNA expression in murine embryos was studied. mRNA expression patterns of Nr2f2 and Mctp2were identified consistent with a role in cardiac development. Subsequent sequencing of MCTP2 identified a single missense mutation in the LVOTO patient cohort, suggesting both genes may be involved in the aetiology of LVOTO. Immunohistochemistry of NR2F2 and MCTP2 also showed patterns consistent with a role for both proteins in cardiogenesis; NR2F2 expression included atrial myocardium and heart valves and MCTP2 in the ventricular myocardium. As copy number variation of NR2F2 and MCTP2 remained a further possible cause for LVOTO, DNA from 36 cases of isolated LVOTO with a normal karyotype and negative for mutations in NR2F2 or MCTP2, was interrogated using array Comparative Genomic Hybridisation. Although no CNVs of the region containing these genes were identified, the interruption of NR2F2 by a translocation and discovery of a mutation in MCTP2 suggests that variation in either gene may be a low frequency cause of LVOTO.<br/

No full textThe Jesse Mercer Gehman Photo Collection has three distinct parts and contains material from Jesse Mercer Gehman, Doris Doscher Baum and Bernarr Macfadden. Jesse Mercer Gehman was a naturopathic doctor, amateur wrestler, magazine editor, author, and active professional in the field of physical culture, natural health, and fitness. The collection documents Gehman’s interest and participation in wrestling during the 1920s-1930s. Included in the collection are photographs of wrestling poses published in the magazines Muscle Builder and Physical Culture as well as portraits of wrestlers from the era. The collection also contains materials related to Gehman’s involvement in American Better Health Publications, American Vegetarian-Hygienist, Health and Strength magazine and the Natural Living Foundation Internationale from the 1920s-1960s. Gehman’s material also includes personal family photographs, and a small number of newspaper clippings, postcards, colored slides, negatives, and correspondence. Doris Doscher Baum was a leading female journalist, model and actress whose work centered on physical culture and naturopathy. Doris’s materials include articles and photographs on stretching exercises, photographs from her career as a model and film actress in the 1920s, and family photographs. Additionally, the collection includes materials related to Bernarr Macfadden, the owner of Macfadden Publications, a prolific author on topics such as health, fitness and bodybuilding, and Gehman’s employer at Physical Culture. The Macfadden materials, which have a small but significant presence in the collection, include his family scrapbook from the 1920s in addition to photographs of Macfadden in his late years
Prevalence of masturbation and associated factors in a British national probability survey
No full textA stratified probability sample survey of the British general population, aged 16 to 44 years, was conducted from 1999 to 2001 (N = 11,161) using face-to-face interviewing and computer-assisted self-interviewing. We used these data to estimate the population prevalence of masturbation, and to identify sociodemographic, sexual behavioral, and attitudinal factors associated with reporting this behavior. Seventy-three percent of men and 36.8% of women reported masturbating in the 4 weeks prior to interview (95% confidence interval 71.5%-74.4% and 35.4%-38.2%, respectively). A number of sociodemographic and behavioral factors were associated with reporting masturbation. Among both men and women, reporting masturbation increased with higher levels of education and social class and was more common among those reporting sexual function problems. For women, masturbation was more likely among those who reported more frequent vaginal sex in the last four weeks, a greater repertoire of sexual activity (such as reporting oral and anal sex), and more sexual partners in the last year. In contrast, the prevalence of masturbation was lower among men reporting more frequent vaginal sex. Both men and women reporting same-sex partner(s) were significantly more likely to report masturbation. Masturbation is a common sexual practice with significant variations in reporting between men and women
Plan B : The Catherine Morrissey Gift
No full textDocument in the form of a folded poster, to accompany an exhibition of 56 pieces (by nine artists) selected from Catherine Morrissey’s 1997 donation of more than 300 contemporary Canadian artworks to the London Regional Art and Historical Museums. The exhibition was organized in collaboration with Visual Arts students attending an Introduction to Museum Studies course at the University of Western Ontario. Mercer provides a brief introduction to the project, which is based on D. Phillip’s concepts of mapping and framing. The essay by Grant and Mercer outlines the significance of the exhibition’s title and curatorial themes. Includes brief statements by ten student curators. List of works
