The Achaeans of Homer and those of Hobbes: from a pluralistic monism to absolutism

    No full text
When in the 70s of the 17th century Thomas Hobbes translated the Homeric poems from Greek into English in order to make them "a continuation of Leviathan by other means" (2008) he had to handle very carefully the original texts because of their being often at odds with his political theory. The essay, through a lexical analysis, analyses the translations with a view to stress how the Malmesbury philosopher changed the Iliad and the Odyssey in order to bypass the pluralistic monism of the original version and make it as similar as possible to his absolutism

Fil: Catanzaro, Gisela Mara. Get PDF
Fil: Catanzaro, Gisela Mara. Universidad de Buenos Aires; Argentina. No full text

    No full text
This paper deals with the section of Chronikè Diéghesis that Niketas Cho-niates devoted to the Byzantine emperor Andronikos I Komnenos (1183-1185). According to the author, the emperor could be regarded as a wild and bloody tyrant. This image became a sort of tyrant‘s model for some western political thinkers such as Egnatius, Bodin and Crucé. The analysis focuses on the political metaphors used to describe the politics of Andronikos in or-der to explain his political project. Although Niketas was a fierce opponent of Andronikos‘s government, considering the emperor a cruel tyrant and criti-cizing his regime of terror, he gives a complex and not only negative judg-ment about him
