    Traces and shards of self-injury: Strange accounting with “Author X”

    In this strange account autoethnography, three or four authors explore their lived experiences with self-injury. Strange accounting is both a post-modern style of text, and a method for keeping identities concealed when risks and secrets are in play. Author X, a post-modern place-keeper for an anonymous author who may or may not have contributed to this manuscript, introduces a new dimension and layer of concealment. With Author X in-play and under erasure, the reader will never be sure if there were three or four authors on this manuscript. Through strange accounting, a post-structuralist/postmodernist frame will be applied to understanding the self-injury experience. We frame self-injury as a social practice and, for some, an everyday norm, while remaining acutely aware of the stigma surrounding the topic of self-injury. Each of us, coupled with Author X, provide the others cover to trace stories of self-injury through the literature, our flesh, and our lives

    Acquiring domain knowledge for negotiating agents: a case study

    In this paper, we employ the fuzzy repertory table technique to acquire the necessary domain knowledge for software agents to act as sellers and buyers using a bilateral, multi-issue negotiation model that can achieve optimal results in semi-competitive environments. In this context, the seller's domain knowledge that need to be acquired is the rewards associated with the products and restrictions attached to their purchase. The buyer's domain knowledge that is acquired is the requirements and preferences on the desired products. The knowledge acquisition methods we develop involve constructing three fuzzy repertory tables and their associated distinctions matrixes. The first two are employed to acquire the seller agent's domain knowledge; and the third one is used, together with an inductive machine learning algorithm, to acquire the domain knowledge for the buyer agent

    <i>Thyraplax truncata</i> Castro, 2007 (Fig. 3) <p> <i>Thyraplax truncata</i> Castro, 2007: 683, figs 25, 26. — Ahyong 2009: 66, fig. 1A-C.</p> <p> MATERIAL EXAMINED. — <b>New Caledonia.</b> EBISCO, stn CP 2498, 24°45.0’S, 159°43.0’E, 367-536 m, 6.X.2005, 1 ♀, 7.2 mm, cw 9.7 mm (MNHN-B30794).</p> <p>REMARKS</p> <p> <i>Thyraplax truncata</i>, was described from five specimens, all males, which were collected from depths of 430- 500 m in New Caledonia and Fiji. Ahyong (2009) subsequently recorded a female from the Kermadec Is., New Zealand. A second female specimen from New Caledonia now permits the description of the female. All characters related to the morphology of the carapace and pereopods (Fig. 3A) agree with those described for the males (Castro 2007: 683, figs 25A, 26). One exception is the dark-brown tip of the cheliped fingers, which extended slightly less in the female than in the five males previously studied.</p> <p>DESCRIPTION OF THE FEMALE</p> <p>Abdomen wide.Telson triangular,slightly wider than long.     CASTRO: A Massively Parallel Compressible Astrophysics Simulation Code

    Castro is a highly parallel, adaptive mesh, multiphysics simulation code for compressible astrophysical flows. It has been used to simulate different progenitor models of Type Ia supernovae, X-ray bursts, core-collapse and electron capture supernovae, and dynamics in exoplanets. Together, Castro, the low Mach number code MAESTROeX and the cosmology code Nyx make up the AMReX-Astrophysics Suite of open-source, adaptive mesh, performance portable astrophysical simulation codes

    A 2 h periodic variation in the low-mass X-ray binary Ser X-1

    Spectroscopy of the low-mass X-ray binary Ser X-1 using the Gran Telescopio Canarias have revealed a ?2 h periodic variability that is present in the three strongest emission lines. We tentatively interpret this variability as due to orbital motion, making it the first indication of the orbital period of Ser X-1. Together with the fact that the emission lines are remarkably narrow, but still resolved, we show that a main-sequence K dwarf together with a canonical 1.4 M? neutron star gives a good description of the system. In this scenario, the most likely place for the emission lines to arise is the accretion disc, instead of a localized region in the binary (such as the irradiated surface or the stream-impact point), and their narrowness is due instead to the low inclination (?10°) of Ser X-1
