A case of accidental Ricin poisoning
A case report of accidental, mild ricin poisoning by ingestion of ten Castor beans by a 70 year old man. The clinical presentation is followed by a discussion about the toxicity of ricin, its use and misuse and the contrast between the toxicity of pure ricin and the ingestion of castor beans. Management of castor bean poisoning is also discussed.peer-reviewe
The Effects of Possible Contamination on the Radiocarbon Dating of the Dead Sea Scrolls II: Empirical Methods to Remove Castor Oil and Suggestions for Redating
While kept at the Rockefeller Museum in East Jerusalem, many Dead Sea Scroll fragments were exposed to castor oil by the original team of editors in the course of cleaning the parchments. Castor oil must be regarded as a serious contaminant in relation to radiocarbon dating. If modern castor oil is present and is not removed prior to dating, the 14C dates will be skewed artificially towards modern values. Earlier, it was shown that the standard AAA pretreatment procedure used in the 2 previous studies dating Dead Sea Scroll samples is not capable of removing castor oil from parchment samples. In the present work, we show that it is unlikely that castor oil reacts with the amino acids of the parchment proteins, a finding which leaves open the possibility of devising a cleaning method that can effectively remove castor oil. We then present 3 different pretreatment protocols designed to effectively remove castor oil from parchment samples. These involve 3 different cleaning techniques: extraction with supercritical CO2, ultrasound cleaning, and Soxhlet extraction—each with their own advantages and disadvantages. Our data show that the protocol involving Soxhlet extraction is the best suited for the purpose of decontaminating the Dead Sea Scrolls, and we recommend that this protocol be used in further attempts to 14C date the Dead Sea Scrolls. If such an attempt is decided on by the proper authorities, we propose a list of Scroll texts, which we suggest be redated in order to validate the 14C dates done earlier.
Betty Castor Oral History Interview
Betty Castor received her bachelors degree from Rowan University and a masters degree from the University of Miami. She is currently serving on the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board, the Tampa Bay Committee on Foreign Relations, and on the board of directors for the North Star Bank and Community Foundation of Tampa Bay. In this oral history interview, Castor discusses her political and educational career in Florida. She talks about being the first woman elected to the Hillsborough County Commission and some of the difficulties she faced as a working mother. She recounts the infamous University Club incident where she was asked to leave a male-only club in Tampa, Florida. Castor also speaks about her time as the first woman Democrat elected to the Florida senate and her involvement in several important legislative initiatives such as the Equal Rights Amendment of 1977, spouse abuse center funding, and early childhood education. She talks about her time as Florida Educational Commissioner and her tenure as the first female president of the University of South Florida (USF). She describes some of the difficulties she encountered at USF, including funding challenges and the Sami Al-Arian controversy. She also describes some of her proudest achievements at USF such as the establishment of a football team, infrastructure improvements, and increased staff and student diversity. She finishes the interview by discussing her time as president of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards

The Effect of Time, Temperature, and Pressure on the Hydrogenation of Castor Oil
The intention of the author in doing this research was to obtain some data on the effect of time, temperature, and pressure on the hydrogenation of castor oil at 100°C. The author is also interested to see if a method could be devised by which the saturated and unsaturated fatty acids could be separated from the hydroxy acids of hydrogenated castor oil

Expression of castor LPAT2 enhances ricinoleic acid content at the sn-2 position of triacylglycerols in lesquerella seed
Lesquerella is a potential industrial oilseed crop that makes hydroxy fatty acid (HFA). Unlike castor its seeds are not poisonous but accumulate lesquerolic acid mostly at the sn-1 and sn-3 positions of triacylglycerol (TAG), whereas castor contains ricinoleic acid (18:1OH) at all three positions. To investigate whether lesquerella can be engineered to accumulate HFAs in the sn-2 position, multiple transgenic lines were made that express castor lysophosphatidic acid acyltransferase 2 (RcLPAT2) in the seed. RcLPAT2 increased 18:1OH at the sn-2 position of TAGs from 2% to 14%–17%, which resulted in an increase of tri-HFA-TAGs from 5% to 13%–14%. Our result is the first example of using a LPAT to increase ricinoleic acid at the sn-2 position of seed TAG. This work provides insights to the mechanism of HFA-containing TAG assembly in lesquerella and directs future research to optimize this plant for HFA production
