Acoustic beamforming: analysis of uncertainty and metrological performances
No full textIn this paper, the metrological performances of the acoustic beamforming technique have been investigated, and in
particular, its accuracy in estimating the acoustic power of sources and in localizing their spatial position has been
analysed.
The uncertainty of the system has been determined combining the statistical effects of input parameters uncertainty
under the basic hypothesis that the sound source can be represented as a distribution of independent monopoles. This
analysis was performed using a Type B approach based on an analytical model according to the ISO Guide of the
expression of uncertainty in measurement and subsequently using a numerical model based on Monte Carlo simulation.
Systematic errors due to deviations of input parameters (e.g. speed of sound or source–array distance), affecting output
level and spatial accuracy have been analysed. Once these inaccuracies were quantified, suggestions to minimize them were
given.
Finally a criterion to optimize focussing of the beamforming technique based on acoustic image contrast maximization
has been developed

Resource guide for student's cumulative folders
No full textPlan BThe purpose of this study was to develop a resource guide for teachers, counselors, parents, and administrators at North High School in Eau Claire, WI. Primary data was collected by randomly selecting cumulative folders from each grade level (9-12) during the spring of 2000. A pattern was established as to the commonality of content. The resource guide was then generated to reflect the cumulative folder. The following reference guide was developed as a collection of medical, educational, and measurement terms, and the professionals who are often a part of a student’s school career. The survey indicated educational personnel had very little knowledge of what was in a student cumulative folder, as well as little knowledge and background as to how to find and interpret information about a student. For this reason the intent of this resource guide was to help educational personnel to become more proficient in understanding the information found in a student’s cumulative folder

Publishing and sharing sensitive data
No full textSensitive data has often been excluded from discussions about data publication and sharing. It was believed that sharing sensitive data is not ethical or that it is too difficult to do safely. This opinion has changed with greater understanding and use of methods to ‘de-sensitise’ (i.e., confidentialise) data; that is, modify the data to remove information so that participants or subjects are no longer identifiable, and the capacity to grant ‘conditional access’ to data. Requirements of publishers and funding bodies for researchers to publish and share their data have also seen sensitive data sharing increase.
This guide outlines best practice for the publication and sharing of sensitive research data in the Australian context. The Guide follows the sequence of steps that are necessary for publishing and sharing sensitive data, as outlined in the ‘Publishing and Sharing Sensitive Data Decision Tree’. It provides the detail and context to the steps in this Decision Tree. References for further reading are provided for those that are interested.

Ultrasound image features of the wrist are linearly related to finger positions
No full textUltrasound imaging is a widespread technique to gather live images of the interiors of the human body. It is safe and provides high spatial and temporal resolution. In this paper we show that features extracted from the ultrasound section of the human wrist can be used to fully reconstruct the hand movements, including flexion of all fingers and the rotation of the thumb. Surprisingly, it turns out that there is a clear linear relationship between image features and finger positions. The related matrix can be estimated on a rather small subset of samples, and the reconstruction is quite robust across single- and multi-finger movements. This technique can be used to control advanced mechatronic hands, and it finds its paradigmatic application in the case of hand amputees
The construction of Karen Karnak: The multi-author-function
No full textThis thesis is situated within the comparatively recent developments of Web 2.0 and the emergence of interactive WikiMedia, and explores the mode of authorship within a Read/Write culture compared to that of a Read/Only tradition. The hypothesis of this study is that the role of the audience has become merged with the author, and as such, represents new functions and attributes, distinct from a more conventional concept of authorship, in which the roles of audience and author are more separate. Read/Write and participatory culture, as defined by this study, is focused on collaboration, and includes the influences of D.I.Y. culture, Open-Source practices and the production of text by multiple authors. Multi-authorship presents a re-thinking of several concepts which support the notion of the individual author, since the focus of multi-authorship is not on attribution and ownership of a finished text, but on the continued malleability of a text. Modes of multi-authorship, demonstrated in the use of the pseudonyms Alan Smithee and Karen Eliot, represent declarative authors whose names signify multiple origins, whilst concurrently indicating a distinct body of work. The function of these names form an important context to this study, since primary research involves the construction of an experimental mode of multi-authorship utilising WikiMedia technology and the interaction of thirty nine participants, who are invited to create a body of work under the collective pseudonym Karen Karnak. The data generated by this experiment is analysed using aspects of Michel Foucault's author-function to identify and determine power structures inherent in the WikiMedia context. The interplay of power structures, including concepts such as identity, ownership and the body of work, affect the resulting mode of authorship and contribute to the construction of Karen Karnak, suggesting further areas of research into the emerging multi-author
