Evaluation of the Behaviour of Digital Circuits by Timed Petri Nets

    No full text
An application of the Petri net formal model, augmented by inserting the notion of time, to the analysis of the time behavior of digital circuits, is presented. The modeling, simulation, and performance evaluation are examined. The results show that the Petri net model is very useful in the logic simulation of VLSI circuits as it transforms time into space (memory) complexity. Examples illustrate the way in which Petri nets can be used for evaluating the maximum time performance of a digital network

Synthesis of Synchronous Finite State Machines for All-Optical Implementations

    No full text
In this paper an efficient method to synthesize all-optical synchronous digital finite state machines is suggested. The synthesis is based on the design of purely combinational circuits composed of a cascade of iterative cells that perform the same logical functions of the corresponding synchronous Finite State Machine (FSM). This allows high bit rates and a high degree of modularity, so an easy integration of the circuit is possible. These characteristics make the method suitable to be adopted in a photonic environment in which clocked digital memory elements are still a critical aspec

Electro-optic switch adopting the carrier injection effects

    No full text
A double hetero-structure intersecting waveguide modulator is designed and analyzed. Adopting the carrier injection effects, a well-confined injection carrier channel is formed, which can act as a waveguide or as antiwaveguide. A transversal electrode switches the modulator from the on-state to the off-state or vice versa. The design is made to optimize the switch performance and to obtain the smallest injection current. The analysis is carried out adopting the finite difference beam propagation method (FD-BPM) and a random searching optimization procedure. The fabrication process of the modulator is easy, so the switch is suitable for use in GaAs monolithic optoelectronic integrated devices

Evaluation of Technology Options for Substrate noise reduction

Substrate coupling is a phenomenon that affects the behavior and performance of RF and mixed signal ICs. Prediction of such crosstalk during the design process can help designers. In this paper, a new methodology is presented for performing a fast and reliable characterization of the noise transmission path, modeling the substrate as a resistive network. Adopting only DC measurement techniques, the dependence of disturbances attenuation on the geometric parameters is found. Moreover, the relation between attenuation and disturbance types is indicated. Finally, a qualitative comparison is made between the efficiency of the most commonly used technology measures against substrate crosstalk
