Roulette and particular probabilities
Title: Roulette and particular probabilities Author: Simona Oberhauserová Department: Department of probability and mathematical statistics Supervisor: Doc.RNDr. Petr Lachout, CSc., Department of probability and mathe- matical statistics Abstract: The thesis formulates roulette as a mathematical problem and examines the best roulette strategies in terms of probability of winning, gambler's ruin and probability distribution of profit. This game follows Kolmogor axiomatic probability model, therefore the calculations were counted by the basic formulas and axioms. In the calculations of the gambler's ruin differential equations were also used and built with random walk. In the longest expected run of red (black) were used sto- chastic processes and extreme value theory. In addition to interesting calculations, the conclusion also contains finding that there is no winning strategy in roulette. Even though one-time probabilities of winning are high, the finding indicates nega- tive mean value of profit. Keywords: Roulette, Kolmogorov axiomatic probability spac

Portuguese Roulette
The author presents an account on the experiences of his Australian theatre company on a visit to Portugal to perform the play 'Roulette'. He describes the theatrical facilities provided, the audience reaction to the play and also the widespread interest among Portuguese youth for theatre and dance
LED-roulette: LED's vervangen balletje
Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Scienc
Behavioral Ecology of Tobacco and Cannabis Use Among Aka Foragers of the Congo Basin
Thesis (Ph.D.), Anthropology, Washington State UniversityLittle is known about substance use among extant hunting-gathering populations. I therefore conducted one of the first biocultural, and biomarker validated, studies of tobacco and cannabis among the Aka foragers of the Congo Basin. Because tobacco and cannabis contain anthelmintic compounds, and because the Aka suffer from high rates of helminthiasis, I also tested a hypothesis that recreational use of neurotoxic plants helps defend against parasites. Self- and peer-reports of tobacco and cannabis were collected from all Aka residing in the study area (n=379). Detailed questions about substance use were asked among a subset of these. Because female use was low, I restricted saliva, urine and stool sample collections to men. Saliva samples were assayed for cotinine, a nicotine metabolite; urine samples were assayed for THCA, a metabolite of THC; a subsample was genotyped for the CYP2A6 enzyme, which metabolizes nicotine. Stool samples were assayed for intestinal helminth eggs as an index of worm burden. Aka men pay more for tobacco, yet have a higher smoking prevalence (95%) than men in most other populations, whereas Aka women have a low prevalence. Aka thus have one of the largest known gender differences in smoking. Tobacco is widely shared, and might play a central role in this defining aspect of Aka culture. Significant negative correlations between cotinine and worm burden and THCA and worm burden were found. Treating helminths with a commercial anthelmintic reduced cotinine concentration two weeks later, compared to placebo controls. Significant negative rank correlations were found between year 1 cotinine concentrations and reinfection by year 2 and between year 2 THCA concentrations and reinfection. Finally, younger and older participants with slow nicotine-metabolizing alleles had lower worm burdens compared to those with extensive metabolizing alleles. Tobacco advertising cannot easily explain the high prevalence of smoking among Aka men, nor can socioeconomic disparities, proscriptions, or the addictiveness of nicotine easily explain the low prevalence among Aka women. Aka smoking might be better explained by internal, rather than external, cultural and political-economic factors. In addition, these results provide the first support for the hypothesis that substance use helps defend against parasites.Department of Anthropology, Washington State Universit
Roulette Odds and Profits: The Mathematics of Complex Bets
Continuing his series of books on the mathematics of gambling, the author shows how a simple-rule game such as roulette is suited to a complex mathematical model whose applications generate improved betting systems that take into account a player's personal playing criteria. The book is both practical and theoretical, but is mainly devoted to the application of theory. About two-thirds of the content is lists of categories and sub-categories of improved betting systems, along with all the parameters that might stand as the main objective criteria in a personal strategy - odds, profits and losses. The work contains new and original material not published before. The mathematical chapter describes complex bets, the profit function, the equivalence between bets and all their properties. All theoretical results are accompanied by suggestive concrete examples and can be followed by anyone with a minimal mathematical background because they involve only basic algebraic skills and set theory basics. The reader may also choose to skip the math and go directly to the sections containing applications, where he or she can pick desired numerical results from tables. The book offers no new so-called winning strategies, although it discusses them from a mathematical point of view. It does, however, offer improved betting systems and helps to organize a player's choices in roulette betting, according to mathematical facts and personal strategies. It is a must-have roulette handbook to be studied before placing your bets on the turn of either a European or American roulette wheel

A brief review of self-asphyxial risk-taking behaviour in adolescents
Adolescence is often viewed as a time for experimentation and risk-taking behaviour. For instance, when I was a teenager, my friends and I used to occasionally play a game that we called ‘Headrush’ where we would have our breathing temporarily stopped by someone holding onto our chests after a deep expiration and hyperventilation (so that we could not breathe). It induced feelings of light-headedness and dizziness followed by temporary unconsciousness (usually lasting 10 to 15 seconds). I did it twice and on both occasions I felt as though I had lived a whole other life while I was unconscious. I cannot remember exactly why I had engaged in such a potentially life-threatening behaviour except that all my friends were doing it
