Conservative approach to granular cell tumour of the oesophagus: three case reports

    No full text
Granular cell tumour is an uncommon and generally benign lesion. In oesophageal location it is often asymptomatic and incidentally diagnosed at endoscopy. Three cases of granular cell oesophageal tumour are reported, with multiple location in one. In two cases the tumour was removed endoscopically by multiple biopsies

Endoesophageal ultrasonography in the staging of esophageal carcinoma

    No full text
Staging of esophageal cancer is fundamental for treatment and prognosis of this tumour. At present, barium swallow and computed tomography (CT) are the most utilized diagnostic modalities. In recent years Endoscopic Ultrasonography (EUS) has been employed for this purpose. We retrospectively compared the results of EUS and CT staging of 33 selected patients with postsurgical stage. EUS allowed a correct diagnosis of parietal invasion in 82% of cases vs 67% obtained by CT. At the same time, EUS diagnosed correctly 85% of metastatic lymph nodes vs 64% reached by CT. We believe that EUS, in combination with CT, is an appropriate modality for the staging of esophageal cancer

Role of tissue CEA and receptor for estradiol in colon and rectal polyps

In order to evaluate the significance of Carcinoembrionic Antigen (CEA) and Estradiol Receptor (ER) in precancerous lesions of colorectal tract, a study on 300 polyps removed at endoscopy from 165 patients was undertaken. In all the polyps the histological pattern and the grade of dysplasia were evaluated, in 40 tissue-CEA and ER too. Tissue-CEA was detected by an Immunoperoxidase technique (PAP), ER by Dextran Coated Charcoal method (DCC). High Tissue-CEA was found among polyps with moderate or severe dysplasia, 47% of the polyps were ER-positive. The correlation Tissue-CEA/ER showed a high Tissue-CEA content in 47% ER-negative and in 26% ER-positive polyps. A five year follow-up showed a highest recurrence of polyps among the patients whose first polyp removed at endoscopy had a high Tissue-CEA and ER-negative levels. These results let us to suggest that Tissue-CEA and ER have to be considered in the management of patients with colorectal polyps

[The optimal implantation of the peritoneal-jugular shunt with LeVeen valve]

The authors underline the efficacy of peritoneovenous shunting with LeVeen's valve in the treatment of refractory ascites in cirrhotic patients. Selection and appropriate preoperative management of patients are essential to assure good immediate and long-term results

[Transhepatic and mini-laparotomic approach in the embolization of the left gastric vein]

    No full text
The Authors depict the possibility to reduce the risk of variceal bleeding with the embolization of the left gastric vein through a transhepatic or mini-laparotomic approach. Such treatment applied in 5 cases was effective: during a mean one-year follow-up no rebleeding was registered, while the stabilization of a satisfying haemodynamic state in relation to the chronic liver disease was observed
