New speakers, potential new speakers, and their experiences and abilities in Scottish Gaelic
No full textAt present, adult L2 users account for approximately four per cent of the total of individuals with some knowledge of Gaelic. Previous research has investigated the role of adult L2 Gaelic users in language revitalisation (A. MacCaluim, 2007), their language learning experiences (E. McEwan-Fujita, 2010), and their identities (W. McLeod and B. O’Rourke, 2015). Research by N. Carty (2015) has examined their language processing and oral production skills. This chapter attempts to broaden the scope of N. Carty (2015) to better incorporate the new speaker model, with a view to enhancing our understanding of the ways in which Gaelic L2 users’ speech is perceived

No full textAnthony Carty deconstructs the notion of universality in law as it is expressed by Rousseau. He traces a dichotomy between the general and the particular which assumes an ontological priority for the former over the latter. The two are translated in turn into objective and subjective. Modernist epistemology supposes that methodology is the instrument by means of which one can escape from the subjectivity of the particular into the objectivity of the general. Carty traces the implications of this assumption for analytical/pure theories of law and for the study of law from a sociological perspective. The death of the general and the end of the social lead legal studies into an impasse.Anthony Carty déconstruit la notion d'universalité dans le droit telle qu'elle est exprimée par Rousseau. No full textDworkin's work has provoked a number of criticisms, centering around two important issues with which he is concerned : the nature of judicial discretion, and the nature and existence of individual rights. Carty considers the exchanges that have taken place on these questions between some principal Anglo-American theorists : Dworkin himself, Joseph Raz, Neil MacCormick and Michael Sandel. Carty emphasises Dworkin's refusal to deal with the metaphysical aspects of these issues, and argues that he must make clear his conception of the human agent whose freedom he is so concerned to protect.L'œuvre de Dworkin a suscité de nombreuses critiques, qui tiennent à l'importance des questions qu'il soulève : le pouvoir discrétionnaire des juges, l'existence de droits individuels. A Multi-Language Comparison of Influences on Author Verification using Character N-Grams

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
No full textWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Muscle synergy-informed neuromusculoskeletal modelling to estimate knee contact forces in children with cerebral palsy
No full textCerebral palsy (CP) includes a group of neurological conditions caused by damage to the developing brain, resulting in maladaptive alterations of muscle coordination and movement. Estimates of joint moments and contact forces during locomotion are important to establish the trajectory of disease progression and plan appropriate surgical interventions in children with CP. Joint moments and contact forces can be estimated using electromyogram (EMG)-informed neuromusculoskeletal models, but a reduced number of EMG sensors would facilitate translation of these computational methods to clinics. This study developed and evaluated a muscle synergy-informed neuromusculoskeletal modelling approach using EMG recordings from three to four muscles to estimate joint moments and knee contact forces of children with CP and typically developing (TD) children during walking. Using only three to four experimental EMG sensors attached to a single leg and leveraging an EMG database of walking data of TD children, the synergy-informed approach estimated total knee contact forces comparable to those estimated by EMG-assisted approaches that used 13 EMG sensors (children with CP, n = 3, R2 = 0.95 +/- 0.01, RMSE = 0.40 +/- 0.14 BW; TD controls, n = 3, R2 = 0.93 +/- 0.07, RMSE = 0.19 +/- 0.05 BW). The proposed synergy-informed neuromusculoskeletal modelling approach could enable rapid evaluation of joint biomechanics in children with unimpaired and impaired motor control within a clinical environment
