No full textMichael Carter (Class of 1984) was interviewed by India Simmons in Fondren Library at Southern Methodist University on March 20, 2019. The interview was recorded by Nia Kamau. In his interview, Mr. Carter discusses growing up in Oak Cliff, Dallas in a predominantly black neighborhood. Heavily involved in sports from a young age, Mr. Carter set the American National High School record in shot put his senior year of high school, a record which stands to this day. USA Track and Field selected his record-setting moment as the #16 Greatest Moment in American Track and Field history, and Track and Field News named him as ''High School Athlete of the Year.'' Coming to SMU on a football scholarship, Mr. Carter was a dual-sport athlete as he continued to compete on the men's track and field team. Rooming with Eric Dickerson and other notable SMU football players, Mr. Carter had a successful football and NCAA Track and Field career, in addition to majoring in Sociology. Mr. Carter always had a hectic schedule, and his senior year featured getting married in April, graduation in May, trying out for the USA Olympic team in June, and competing in the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles where he obtained a silver medal in the shot put. The next day, Mr. Carter signed with the San Francisco 49ers as a nose tackle. From there, he helped lead the team to 3 Super Bowl championships and 3 Pro Bowl selections. A member of DISD Hall of Fame, SMU Hall of Fame, and Texas Track and Field Coaches Association Hall of Fame, Mr. Carter's legacy continued on with his children; he coached his daughter, Michelle, and helped her obtain a gold medal at the 2016 Olympic games in Rio de Janeiro. Now, retired, Mr. Carter continues to coach his daughter and 20 other young athletes in the shot put as they travel the globe competing in the sport
