Extreme Events Assessment Methodology Coupling Rainfall and Tidal Levels in the Coastal Flood Plain of the Sao Paulo North Coast (Brazil) for Engineering Projects Purposes

    No full text
The North Coastal Region of the State of São Paulo, which comprises the Municipalities of Caraguatatuba, São Sebastião, Ilhabela and Ubatuba, is one of the most prone to flooding Brazilian areas, owing to hydrological extreme rainfall events usually coupled with extreme tidal levels. This risk is also high due to human lives and material assets, with increasing population rates and the settling of large Companies such as the Oil industry, with reduced defense measures and works. The catastrophic scenario of the city of Caraguatatuba, in March of 1967, resulted from one of the most serious natural disasters in Brazil, fosters discussions about probabilities of rainfall events and rise in the sea level in coastal areas. Hence, this research is a consequence of this reality. The research presented is founded on an innovative methodology based on the analysis of past data of rainfall stations and tidal stations in the region of the North coastal zone of the State of São Paulo (Brazil). The analysis developed approached the meteorological, hydraulic and statistical knowledge areas. Practical results were used for designing macro-drainage, fluvial and maritime projects, that associate the probability of occurrence of certain types of rainfall coupled with their corresponding increase in tidal level

The North Coastal Region of the State of São Paulo, which comprises the Municipalities of Caraguatatuba, São Sebastião, Ilhabela and Ubatuba, is one of the Brazilian areas most prone to flooding and debris flow deposition, owing to hydrological extreme rainfall events, usually coupled with extreme tidal levels. The catastrophic scene of the city of Caraguatatuba March 18, 1967, resulting from one of the most serious natural disasters in Brazil, fosters discussions about probabilities of heavy rainfall-caused events and subsequent rise in the sea level in coastal areas. The research is founded on an innovative methodology based on the analysis of past rainfall and tidal station data, complemented with debris flow measurements and coupled with FLO-2D hydrodinamical model. The analysis involved meteorological, hydraulic, geotechnical and statistical knowledge areas applied to the region of the North coastal zone of the State of São Paulo (Brazil). The obtained results are a good predictor of the probability of occurrence of certain types of heavy rainfall-caused events such as flooding or debris flow, coupled with a corresponding increase in tidal levels. These practical results are intended to be used for urban planning, designs of macrodrainage, fluvial, maritime projects and debris flow retention structures

The North Coastal Region of the State of São Paulo, which comprises the Municipalities of Caraguatatuba, São Sebas-tião, Ilhabela and Ubatuba, is one of the most prone to flooding and debris flow deposition Brazilian areas, owing to hydrological extreme rainfall events usually coupled with extreme tidal levels. This risk is also high due to human lives and material assets, with increasing population rates and the establishment of large Companies such as the Oil industry, with reduced defense/prevention measures and works. The catastrophic scenario of the city of Caraguatatuba, in March 1967, resulting from one of the most serious natural disasters in Brazil, fosters discussions about probabilities of heavy rainfall-caused events and rise in the sea level in coastal areas. Hence, this research is a consequence of this reality. The research is founded on an innovative methodology based on the analysis of past data of rainfall and tidal stations, complemented with debris flow registers in the region of the North coastal zone of the State of São Paulo (Brazil). The analysis developed involved the meteorological, hydraulic, geotechnical and statistical knowledge areas. Practical results are intended to be used for urban planning, designs of macro-drainage, fluvial, maritime projects and debris flow retention structures. These practical applications will then associate the probability of occurrence of certain types of heavy rainfall-caused events such as flooding or debris flow coupled with a corresponding increase in tidal level

    Cross-Cultural Meta-Analyses

In the enormous collection of cross-cultural data that have been published during the last few decades it is difficult to perceive patterns. There is a clear need for systematizing the vast amount of cross-cultural studies and for developing models that explain cross-cultural differences in psychology. Two methods of cross-cultural meta-analysis can be distinguished. First, the instrument-based method of comparing data for one instrument across countries is suitable for instruments which have been administered in many countries. Second, a domain-based meta-analysis used a thematic domain from which culture-comparative studies are sampled instead of one specific instrument or method

The essay examines the innovations introduced in the fixed term labour-only subcontracting by d.l. n. 34/2014, conv. l. 78/2014. The Author remarks that the Act, unites fixed term employment contract and fixed term subcontracting. The uncertainties of the new regulation determined by the blending of the regulation of fixed term employment contract and fixed term subcontracting are also highlighted

    A large-scale biomass bulk terminal

    No full text
This research explores the possibility of a large-scale bulk terminal in West Europe dedicated to handle solid and liquid biomass materials. Various issues regarding the conceptual design of such a terminal have been investigated and demonstrated in this research: the potential biomass materials that will be the major international trade flows in the future, the characteristics of these potential biomass materials, the interaction between the material properties and terminal equipment, the perspective from terminal logistic process, and the terminal configuration. To this day no such a terminal exists yet. Therefore, the results from this research are a first step that will help the future development of such a terminal.Marine and Transport TechnologyMechanical, Maritime and Materials Engineerin

This article was born from the union of the reports given by the author during the conferences “Langobardorum Nummorum Doctrina” (2018) and “In Sanctorum Nummis Effigies” (2019). After careful research, the path of Michaelic iconography in medieval coinage and its journey through Europe is demonstrated. The effigy of the saint depicted primarily by the Gepids, and then by the Lombards and the Byzantines, spread throughout medieval Europe, from the Kingdom of Sicily to Denmark. This work, the result not only of numismatic but also of historical and artistic research, is intended to be a starting point for a more complex study that the author is carrying out on the depiction of the saint in medieval coins

    Introduction

© The Author(s) 2019. This chapter introduces the conceptual underpinning and aims of the book, and outlines its content. It discusses how, although the doctorate represents the most advanced form of adult education and qualification, and considerable effort, research and training has been expended on the process of completing a doctorate, there has been far less interest or focus on the lived experience of doing one. It describes how, and why, this book focuses on the human dimension that underpins the highest level of formal learning achievable. This chapter also outlines the volume’s unique organisation around the themes and concerns that students themselves have identified as centrally important to successfully completing their research degrees. The introduction describes how, from assessing the self to working with others, from building resilience to developing networks, and considering how ethical conduct permeates a researcher’s practice, this book takes readers-both students and supervisors-on a journey towards successful doctoral learning. It also describes how, while each section is framed by ideas and concepts suggested by the editors, who are experienced doctoral supervisors, the core content of the book is purposely student-driven and authored, in order to provide an authentic account of the doctoral experience
