    Favara Futures: Research Workshop

    No full text
In a research project between the University of Palermo and Leibniz Universität Hannover, “Dynamics of Periphery” were discussed in a workshop in Palermo. These conceptual approaches were combined with a research workshop in Favara with master’s students from both universities; in collaboration with the municipality of Favara and with FARM Cultural Park Favara. These workshops were funded with the University Dialogue Programme Southern Europe of the DAAD. The transversal research between architecture, urban design, arts, local and regional development highlights the need and the potential of new ways of integrating “Dynamics of Periphery” into debates and policies about the futures of habitat in Europe

Spatial and spectral effects in subcritical system pulsed experiments

    No full text
Accurate neutronic models are needed for the interpretation of pulsed experiments in subcritical systems. In this work, the extent of spatial and spectral effects in the pulse propagation phenomena is investigated and the analysis is applied to the GUINEVERE experiment. The multigroup cross section data is generated by the Monte Carlo SERPENT code and the neutronic evolution following the source pulse is simulated by a kinetic diffusion code. The results presented show that important spatial and spectral aspects need to be properly accounted for and that a detailed energy approach may be needed to adequately capture the physical features of the system to the pulse injection

Reflector effects on the kinetic response in subcritical systems

    No full text
The interpretation of kinetic experiments for source-driven systems is often based on the relationship between the prompt time response and the multiplicativity of the system. The presence of a reflector may modify the physical features of such response. For systems in which the neutron histories are dominated by the presence of the reflector, it becomes difficult to determine the subcriticality value through the observation of the flux response. In this work the characteristics of this phenomenon are analysed, starting from a simple diffusion model that allows to easily get a physical insight. The modification of the time constant is interpreted in terms of modifications to the effective mean prompt neutron generation time, which is increased by the presence of the reflector. Afterwards, more realistic evaluations are carried out by using Monte Carlo simulations of pulsed experiments in source-driven systems. The results confirm the conclusions that may be drawn from the analysis of the simple cases. Copyright © (2015) by the American Nuclear Society All rights reserved

The KIN3D module of the ERANOS French code was developed at the end of the 1990s to analyse the neutron kinetic behaviour of both criticai and subcritical systems. Concerning European experiments in support of ADS technology, presently the attention is focused on the GUINEVERE experimental program , launched in 2007. The GUINEVERE project will flow into the FREYA project, started on March 2011, of the Seventh EU Framework Programme. This report is focused on the test of the ERANOS/KIN3D system to both a classic benchmark like GODIVA and to one core configuration representative of the GUINEVERE/FREYA program

Kinetic parameters of the GUINEVERE reference configuration in VENUS-F reactor obtained from a pile noise experiment using Rossi and Feynman methods

A pile noise measurement campaign has been conducted by the CEA in the VENUS-F reactor (SCK-CEN, Mol Belgium) in April 2011 in the reference critical configuration of the GUINEVERE experimental program. The experimental setup made it possible to estimate the core kinetic parameters: the prompt neutron decay constant, the delayed neutron fraction and the generation time. A precise assessment of these constants is of prime importance. In particular, the effective delayed neutron fraction is used to normalize and compare calculated reactivities of different subcritical configurations, obtained by modifying either the core layout or the control rods position, with experimental ones deduced from the analysis of measurements. This paper presents results obtained with a CEA-developed time stamping acquisition system. Data were analyzed using Rossi- A and Feynman- A methods. Results were normalized to reactor power using a calibrated fission chamber with a deposit of Np-237. Calculated factors were necessary to the analysis: the Diven factor was computed by the ENEA (Italy) and the power calibration factor by the CNRS/IN2P3/LPC Caen. Results deduced with both methods are consistent with respect to calculated quantities. Recommended values are given by the Rossi- A estimator, that was found to be the most robust. The neutron generation time was found equal to 0.448 ± 0.012 μs and the effective delayed neutron fraction is 770.3 ± 19 pcm. Discrepancies with the calculated value (722 pcm, calculation from ENEA) are satisfactory: -6.3% for the Rossi- A estimate and -2.7% for the Feynman- A estimate. © 2015 IEEE

Conceptual design of a sub-critical Pb-cooled Accelerator Driven System (ADS) fuelled by (Th-LEU)

    No full text
The target of this study is to provide information on the actual boundary conditions encountered in the conceptual design of an ADS fuelled by (Th, LEU), as well as their impact on the design itself, on the performances of the system and on the possible solutions from the point of view of the choice of materials, the operating conditions, the neutron design optimization, etc. In this paper rationales and consequences of the (Th, U) fuel cycle adoption, together with the design constraints, are discussed. Identified reference core configuration and the steady state criticality results are also discussed. Stochastic approach for the neutronic evaluations has been adopted. © 2017 Elsevier Lt
