Hemipraocis Kulzer 1958
Subgenus Hemipraocis Kulzer, 1958 Subgeneric characteristics. The species-energy theory: A role for energy variability
Species-energy theory posits that energy availability regulates population sizes, extinction rates and ultimately species richness. This theory has focused mostly on total energy as a measure of energy availability. However, because energy variation can also influence population sizes and extinction rates, species-energy theory should arguably consider simultaneously both total energy and its variation. Using data on species richness of land birds and mammals, we compared the fit of three species-energy models including total energy, energy variation or both combined. We show that the combination of total energy and energy variation has greater predictive power than any of them considered separately. We also evaluate three crucial assumptions of this modified species-energy theory and show that they are supported by available data. These results illuminate the current debate on climate change, given that both average conditions and variability of climatic conditions are likely to change in the future.Fil: Carrara, Rodolfo. Endemic tenebrionids (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) from the Patagonian steppe: a preliminary identification of areas of micro-endemism and richness hotspots
Based on data from sixteen museum collections we listed the endemic tenebrionids that inhabit the Patagonian steppe. Then, according to the geographical location of the species, we identified areas of micro-endemism and hotspots within this biogeographic province. Results showed 115 endemic tenebrionid species from the Patagonian steppe, 25 areas of micro-endemism and five hotspots. We used these outcomes to identify areas of importance for conservation. Based on the comparison with other biogeographic provinces, we suggest that the Patagonian steppe constitutes a center of high endemism for tenebrionids. We hypothesize that the isolation of the Patagonian steppe from other arid areas would cause the high occurrence of endemism. In addition, we suggest processes that could be responsible for the origin of the areas of micro-endemism and hotspots identified in this work.Fil: Carrara, Rodolfo. Two new species of Nyctelia Latreille (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) from western Argentina, with zoogeographical and ecological remarks on the high mountain habitat
Two new species of the genus Nyctelia Latreille (Pimeliinae: Nycteliini) from high mountains in central-western Argentina are described, N. nevadoensis sp. nov. and N. setipennis sp. nov. Distributional and habitat records and habitus photographs for these two new species are included, with comparisons to other known species of the genus. A discussion on the biogeography and the non sympatry with other species of Nyctelia of these two new species is presented. Maps of potential biodiversity: when the tools for regional conservation planning clash with species ecological niches
Maps of potential biodiversity are prominent tools for regional conservation planning because they allow to quantify the diversity of species that potentially inhabit different habitats. These maps are constructed from modeling species ecological niches based on the association between the geographical localities where species were detected and the environmental variables at those localities. Previous researches addressed the development of MPB for administrative regions using regional species distributions data to modeling ecological niches, which may lead to flawed predictions on potential biodiversity. Our aim is to assess the consequences of failing to include all available records on full species distribution to develop MPB. As a study case, we produced two MPBs for an administrative region of Argentina using RSD and FSD data sets of 14 species of insects and performed Environmental Niche Factor Analysis to model their ecological niches. Our results evidenced that both MPB were not spatially congruent in their predictions on potential biodiversity, because the ecological niches represented by RSD and FSD data were different in their position and volume. We found that the MPB based on RSD data may underpredict the potential biodiversity of distinct habitats at the landscape level, and that the use of this map may underestimate areas with different conservation potential within an administrative region. These results suggest that the choice of the extent of geographic records used to construct the MPB strongly conditions the quality and credibility of these maps.Fil: Carrara, Rodolfo. Endemic epigean Tenebrionids (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) from the Andean Region: exploring the patagonian-diversification hypothesis
Tenebrionidae is a diverse insect family of Coleoptera that shows high levels of endemicity in epigean species. For the Andean region, which is divided into three subregions: Central Chilean, Subantarctic and Patagonian, it has been hypothesized that epigean tenebrionids have diversified in the Patagonian subregion and subsequently, they dispersed to Subantarctic and Central Chilean subregions. In this work, based on information obtained from museum collections and scientific studies, we presented the first list of endemic epigean tenebrionids from the Andean region with their taxonomic arrangement and geographic distribution. Moreover, we used these data to explore the veracity of the Patagonian-diversification hypothesis. A total of 416 species grouped into six subfamilies, 17 tribes and 41 genera were identified as endemic to the Andean region. Considering the spatial distribution it was observed that subfamilies, tribes, genera and species were unequally distributed across subregions. Results did not support the Patagonian-diversification hypothesis; to the contrary, they were more concordant with processes of isolation among subregions that have promoted speciation by interrupting gene flow among populations, resulting in endemism because species can not expand their range sizes. Finally, we discuss the implications of our findings to be considered in biodiversity conservation, because endemic species, by their high extinction risk, are primary targets in conservation strategies.Fil: Carrara, Rodolfo. Praocis (Hemipraocis) sellata Berg 1889
Praocis (Hemipraocis) sellata Berg, 1889 This species is characterized by its round shape, width of elytra equal to length, and lateral margin of pronotum and elytron with long, black setae (Kulzer 1958). The most recent key for the subgenus Hemipraocis is that by Kulzer (1958) to separate three subspecies of Praocis (Hemipraocis) sellata Berg and other five species. Later, Kaszab (1964) described Praocis (Hemipraocis) sellata topali which is synonymized in this paper with P. (H.) sellata bruchi. Flores (2007, 2009) established three synonymies within the subgenus. A new key to identify the current five subspecies of Praocis (Hemipraocis) sellata is herein provided. Type material examined in the present study for Praocis (Hemipraocis) sellata sellata Berg and P. (Hemipraocis) sellata bergi Kulzer 1958 is listed in Appendix 2 and for P.
