Abstrak: Artikel ini membahas tentang pemikiran dan karya Carool Kersten (sejarawan Belanda dan ahli studi Islam) berupa buku berjudul “A History of Islam in Indonesia: Unity in Diversity”. Abstract: This article discusses about thoughts and works of Carool Kersten (Dutch historian and expert in Islamic Studies) in the form of a book entitled "A History of Islam in Indonesia: Unity in Diversity". This book is a prestigious work that is an extension of the treasury or a cumulative pattern from previous works of the History of Islamic Civilization in Indonesia. The method used in this review research is the critical historical method through literature study. Each chapter in the book has been explored and analyzed the strengths and weaknesses. The substance of this book describes many events with a simple narrative. The simplification of the narrative in every historical event from the early days of Islam dissemination  (± 13th century) to post-independence of Indonesia indicates that Carool has a short and dense writing style so that this book is very suitable to be read by many people, especially academicians and historical observers

Women’s Agency in Transforming Religious Discourse: Gender-Sensitive Interpretations of Islam in Indonesia

    No full text
The purpose of this article is to present and analyse gender sensitive interpretations of Islam in Indonesia and a reform of fiqh from a gender perspective. These interpretations can be seen as an expression of Islamic feminism, a discursive framework that has grown from the Islamisation processes of Muslim societies in the 1980s. Another aim is to depict the specific Indonesian environment where these ideas have evolved. Firstly, the domestic feminist movement and the influence of international feminist scholars of Islam. Secondly, the liberal approach in Islamic thinking promoted by Nurcholish Madjid and Abdurrahman Wahid and especially their emphasize on the importance of context in the endeavour of ijtihad, independent reasoning or interpretation of the Islamic scriptures. Thirdly, the increase and reform of higher Islamic education and not least the high percentage of female students and scholars. In conclusion, I will present and analyse gender sensitive interpretations of Islam by Indonesian scholars as part of an Islamic feminist discourse. The focus is on what these interpreters actually say and how they relate to tradition – universal Islamic and local Indonesian – in order to legitimise their ideas, but also shortly on how their ideas are used and perceived in Indonesian society. These interpretations can be regarded as Indonesian conceptualizations of Islamic feminism, or to put it differently, interpretations of text in context

A History of Islam in Indonesia

    No full text
This is the first single-volume study of the Islamisation of Indonesia from the first evidence of the acceptance of Islam by indigenous peoples until the present day. It offers an overview of the religion’s growing significance in the formation of what is now the largest and most populous Muslim country in the world, the greatest political power in Southeast Asia, and a growing player on the world scene. With close to a quarter of a billion Muslims, Indonesia is still overlooked by historians of Islam and other specialists in the Muslim world, while Southeast Asianists often underestimate the importance of Islam in the shaping of Indonesia. This survey provides a comprehensive insight into the different roles played by Islam in Indonesia throughout history: From the earliest evidence of its presence in the late thirteenth century; the importance of Indian Ocean networks for connecting Indonesians with the wider Islamic world; the religion’s role as a means of resistance and tool for nation building; and postcolonial attempts to forge an ‘Indonesian Islam’.</p
