La tentazione del moderno. Gesualdo Bufalino e il romanzo europeo del primo Novecento
Full text linkThe work of Gesualdo Bufalino relies on a permanent dialogue with the great modernist models of European fiction. A whole network of allusions, innuendos and micro-quotations from the great novels of Mann, Kafka, Proust, Musil, Joyce, Woolf, is scattered among the pages of Diceria dell’untore, a novel which was conceived as a “serious game” using previous textual materials and recombining them in order to create a new architecture of meaning. In Bufalino’s following books as well, the central position assigned to the Ego coexists with a plot in which the inner experiences of the characters count more than the objective facts. There is an urgency of truth and meaning. The fact that this truth is fluid, relative and always renegotiable does not really matter: page after page, the author keeps betting on the meaning of living and writing. The existential predicament turns itself into a meta-literary predicament that is nurtured by the traditions and structures of the modernist novel

No full textIl saggio indaga le modalità con cui Bufalino indirizza e controlla a distanza il processo di lettura delle proprie opere, Congegnando un intrigante gioco di specchi, di rifrazioni e di mise en abyme, l’autore inserisce all’interno della narrazione episodi e apologhi allegorici, che compendiano in sé l’intero senso del racconto e mettono in scene figure di lettori. L’attenzione del lettore, messa in allerta dalle spie disseminate a bella posta nel testo, è convogliata spesso su una traiettoria per certi versi ‘obbligata’: muovendo dagli indizi predisposti con avvedutezza dal narratore l’interpretazione si concentra giocoforza su certi nodi significativi, mettendo da parte gli altri, eventuali spunti percorribili.The essay investigates the ways in which Bufalino directs and remotely controls the process of reading his own works. By assigning an intriguing game of mirrors, refractions and mise en abyme, the author inserts allegorical episodes and apologues into the narration, that summarize in themselves the whole sense of the story and bring together figures of readers. The attention of the reader, put on alert by the spies disseminated in the text, is often conveyed on a trajectory in some ways 'obliged': moving from the clues predisposed with shrewdness by the narrator the interpretation is concentrated on certain significant nodes, setting aside the others, any possible hints

Full text linkL’Amore. Fisiologia – Psicologia – Morale is probably the highest level of De Roberto’s ideology, and at same time it may be considered as a turning point in the poetic of this author. De Roberto lives in a Positivist age, and he deeply trusts in the instrument of reason. In this work he aims to demonstrate all the contradictions of love and the egoism of the social life. So, De Roberto arrives to a uneasy Positivism, which is focused not only on the “how” of the phenomena, but also to the “why”. Under this point of view, De Roberto’s relativism is similar to that one of Pirandello, and it announces the incoming Modernism. Even if it is impossible to join the truth, De Roberto doesn’t quit his research; at the same time reason doesn’t lose its supremacy. So L’Amore represents a particular crisis of De Roberto’s thought: Positivism is not anymore central, and the Verist ambition of representing life is coming less. along with other more recent dystopias written by women. These texts share
recurring thematic elements, including the portrayal of an androcentric society that subjugates women, ecological catastrophe, childlessness, and the symbolic violence of language. Central to these narratives is the exploration of language as a tool of gender-based oppression. In Pugno’s novel, the sirens’ feral and unsettling silence embodies an irreparable rupture between humanity and nature. At the same time, the prospect of a final, residual form of salvation is entrusted to the feminine capacity to reinvent alternative, posthuman, and estranged modes of expression capable of resisting hegemonic ideology

L’intensità espressiva e l’eccesso verbale cercano di compensare un vuoto e costituiscono, nel sentire dello scrittore, un formidabile mezzo «per contrastare l’ossificazione del mondo». Bufalino rivendica quindi il valore strutturale della propria scelta barocca, dichiarando che la sua scrittura è sorretta da un «barocco borrominiano» in cui «l’ornato è funzione», in mancanza del quale «l’architettura cadrebbe»

No full textIl saggio propone un'analisi del carteggio di Carlo Emilio Gadda con l’«Ammonia Casale», che costituisce un osservatorio d’eccezione da cui mettere a fuoco le contraddizioni dello scrittore-ingegnere. L’epistolario comprende 54 messaggi di Gadda e 26 dell’«Ammonia Casale S.A.» e copre l’arco di tempo decisivo che va dall’aprile 1927 al gennaio del 1940 (con una lunga interruzione tra l’autunno del 1931 e la primavera del 1936): sono gli anni cruciali dell’apprendistato letterario, in cui il romanziere fa le sue prime prove pubbliche. Nella corrispondenza si deposita quindi un collaudato repertorio di situazioni e di temi, che riappariranno, variati, nell’opera: il tema del viaggio, inteso come illusoria via di fuga da un reale opprimente e come nomadismo, con la frenetica peregrinazione da un alloggio all’altro; il conflitto tra la passione per l'ingegneria e la vocazione letteraria; la nevrosi, le ansie, le titubanze che inducono l’ingegnere a rassegnare di continuo le dimissioni, per poi chiedere immancabilmente di essere riassunto; la malattia reale e quella immaginaria, convocata sulla pagina nel preciso intento di differire sine die «gli inevitabili rapporti umani

No full textThe essay analyzes Umberto Saba's poem Appunti in the belief that this text presents new themes and new formal strategies that are used in Il piccolo Berto and are destined to persist beyond that. In its broken and discontinuous brevity, Appunti says without explaining, it expresses a trauma that Saba does not verbalize. Saba burns the causal passages and requires the cooperation of the reader, forcing him to contribute to the construction of meaning and to fill the gaps in a text, in which silences and typographical leaps are worth as much as words. The analysis focuses on the modernity of a formal choice in which syntactic divisions and white spaces dramatize the inner restlessness. At the same time the essay aims to understand the enigmatic and disturbing meaning of this apparently accessible text, searching for the reasons in the macro-text, following the traces of the presence of a key object (the clock) and of some recurring reasons (the childish «hate», the perception of loneliness, the emblems of military life)
