Carl F. Schmidt oral history interview
An oral history with Carl F. Schmidt (1894-1988), an architect employed by Gordon & Kaelber, the firm that designed the University of Rochester School of Medicine and the Strong Memorial Hospital (SMH) in the 1920s. Schmidt discusses working with founding dean George Hoyt Whipple and Nathaniel Faxon, the first director of SMH. Schmidt was responsible for the design of the hospital lobby (now the reading room of the Edward G. Miner Library), the one space in which Whipple allowed some extravagance. Schmidt also discusses his training and American architecture in general. The interview was conducted by Marion S. Emerson, M.D. on May 24, 1982
