Vicente Caraffa

In conversation: photographic curatorship and photographic cultures in museums and research institutions
In this article, Curator of Photography and Photographic Technology, Ruth Quinn talks to Professor Elizabeth Edwards and Dr Costanza Caraffa, two leading thinkers on photography. As a historical and visual anthropologist, and former Curator of Photographs at the Pitt Rivers Museum, Professor Elizabeth Edwards has transformed perceptions of photographs as material objects. Dr Costanza Caraffa is Head of the Photothek at the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz. Caraffa has developed leading approaches to the interaction between photographic, archival and academic practice, advocating for archives as places where research is generated, not only through the act of managing, categorising and re-categorising photographs

DIFFERENT SIGNALS INDUCE MAST CELL INFLAMMATORY ACTIVITY: INHIBITORY EFFECT OF VITAMIN E
Vitamin supplementation in disease reduces morbidity and mortality in humans by promoting the activation of different genes which influence several pathways. The purpose of this article is to clarify the role of vitamin E in mast cell inflammation. Vitamin E is a fat soluble antioxidant which protects from low-density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation. Vitamin E promotes a barrier function and anti-inflammatory responses by binding the regulatory domain of protein kinase C alpha (PKC alpha) (a regulator and antagonist of heart failure) and decreases the activation of NF-kappa B, a proinflammatory transcription factor, causing the generation of cytokines/chemokines and mast cell activation. Mast cells participate in innate and acquired immunity and inflammation. Several factors, including cytokines and chemokines, regulate the development and migration of activated mast cells. Mast cells generate and release inflammatory compounds in asthma and allergic diseases and have a detrimental effect on the vessel wall, which can be inhibited by vitamin E. Vitamin E inhibits histamine release generated in activated mast cells, increases calcium Ca2+ uptake and prevents the oxidation of unsaturated fatty acids. Vitamin E is relatively non-toxic, however, administered at very high doses may suppress normal hematological response as well as causing other adverse effects. Therefore, vitamin E may be beneficial in the prevention of diseases mediated by mast cells and can have special value in the treatment of asthma and allergic diseases; however, the exact mechanism by which vitamin E acts is still unclear, thus warranting future research

Early life field performance of innovative sustainable semi-flexible pavements
Semi-flexible pavements in heavy loads areas are recommended to guarantee good perfor- mance and safety. They are usually constructed by placing a wearing layer of grouted mac- adam, a composite material consisting of a porous Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) skeleton grouted with a cementitious matrix. However, its use is limited as the production process is quite complex and laborious. An effective alternative to grouted macadam can be represented by the Ready to Mix (RTM), recently implemented to offer performances comparable to those of the grouted macadam and a most effortless put-in-place process, and contemporarily leading to environmental and economic advantages. The present research investigated the early life field performance of a semi-flexible pavement including an RTM base. Three Falling Weight Deflectometer testing campaigns were carried out from 2017 to 2021. In particular, the semi-flexible pavement was compared to a reference flexible pavement entirely made with HMA in terms of temperature sensitivity as well as bearing capacity
A Fatal Sepsis Caused by Hyaluronate Knee Injection: How Much the Medical History and the Informed Consent Might Be Important?
The incidence of Osteoarthritis (OA) is gradually increasing worldwide due to two main reasons: longer life expectation and increased functional demand. Several treatment options have been proposed for this disease. Conservative treatment has the goal to improve the quality of life, reduce pain, and prevent the progression of the disease. Hyaluronate viscosupplementation is one of the most used infiltrative treatments for OA, but, despite its common use, clinical efficacy is still under question. Though adverse reactions for this medical option are actually rare, septic arthritis is a very scaring complication. We present a case report of a 59-year-old man who has been submitted to only one knee hyaluronate injection and consequently reported a severe septic arthritis and systemic sepsis, which lead to the death of the patient. We recommend producing correct guidelines for a clean aseptic procedure of injection to obtain proper consensus from the patient and to pay attention to his clinical history and comorbidities before acting any kind of invasive treatment, including joint injection
First reported case of a coronal hamate fracture associated with intrusion of the fifth metacarpal base, together with a fracture of the fourth metacarpal base
We present a case reporting a rare combination of base of fourth metacarpal fracture and coronal body of hamate fracture, treated conservatively with excellent results. High index of suspicion for undetected bony injuries drove the execution of a CT scan, which allowed us to make a full correct diagnosis and plan treatment. Moreover, this case becomes the first reported case in the literature of such injury causing the intrusion of the base of the fifth metacarpal within the hamate bone, thus causing the coronal pattern of the hamate fracture. Differently from the common surgical management of this type of injury, we successfully treated this patient with close reduction and immobilisation, with full recovery after 3 months
