Spillovers, Product Innovation and R&D Cooperation: a Theoretical Model
The paper analyzes the impact of post-innovation knowledge
spillovers on private firms’ R&D investment decisions, considering
the case of stochastic product innovation. We propose a theoretical
model where we compare two scenarios: not cooperation in
R&D versus Research Joint Ventures (RJV); our analysis extends
the results of the literature to the context of product innovation,
confirming the general result that the presence of spillovers reduces
private incentive to invest and may stimulate cooperation.
Moreover, in terms of social welfare, our analysis suggests that
cooperation may not be optimal and, as a consequence, subsidizing
any form of R&D cooperation is not efficient. We show
that cooperation in R&D leads always to the efficient allocation;
however there are cases where cooperating emerges spontaneously
as SPNE, and cases where cooperating does not emerge without
subsides. Finally, when we assume that cooperating firms collude
in the production stage, the increasing of the private incentive to
cooperate reduces the cases where firms need public subsides to
invest: when subsidies are costly, cooperation-collusion may be a
second best solution

NMR and computational data of two novel antimicrobial peptides
AbstractHere we report details on the design and conformational analysis of two novel peptides showing antimicrobial properties, as reported in the research article, “New antimicrobial peptides against foodborne pathogens: from in silico design to experimental evidence” G. Palmieri, M. Balestrieri, Y.T.R. Proroga, L. Falcigno, A. Facchiano, A. Riccio, F. Capuano, R. Marrone, G. Campanile, A. Anastasio (2016) [1]. NMR data, such as chemical shifts in two different solvents as well as aCH protons deviations from random coil values and NOE patterns, are shown together with the statistics of structural calculations. Strategy and particulars of molecular design are presented
R&D incentives to cooperate and invest with licensing
In this paper, we evaluate the private incentive to cooperate comparing three different scenarios (R&D cooperation, and R&D competition with and without licensing), in terms of expected profits, industry probability of innovation, and expected welfare. We show that the feasibility of licensing increases the appropriability of returns and may stimulate R&D investment; moreover, licensing an innovation may lead to the highest social welfare. However, some conflict may emerge between the public and private incentive to license the innovation, and between different policy targets
