    Pericytes in development and pathology of skeletal muscle

    Increasing attention is currently devoted to the multiple roles that pericytes (also defined as mural, Rouget, or perivascular cells) may play during angiogenesis, vascular homeostasis, and pathology. Many recent excellent reviews thoroughly address these topics (see below); hence, we will not discuss them in detail here. However, not much is known about origin, heterogeneity, gene expression, and developmental potential of pericytes during fetal and postnatal development. This is likely because of the paucity of markers expressed by pericytes and the absence of truly unique ones. Thus, in vivo identification and ex perspective isolation are challenging and explain the relative little data available in comparison with neighbor but far more characterized cells such as the endothelium. Despite this preliminary knowledge, we will propose that contribution to growing mesoderm tissues may be an important role for pericytes. Thus, their ability to contribute to tissue regeneration may be a consequence of their role in tissue growth. However, in a severely damaged or diseased tissue, acute or chronic inflammation likely results in the production of signaling molecules that are different from those present in developing tissues, thus explaining why pericytes are easily diverted from a regenerative to a fibrotic fate. © 2013 American Heart Association, Inc

    Equity Investments and Environmental Pressure: The Role of Venture Capital

    This study investigates the global relationship between venture capital (VC) investments and environmental pressure in order to contribute to the literature on the influence of venture capital on sustainable development. Using a unique dataset covering VC activity and CO2 intensity in 131 countries from 2011 to 2021, the study employs a revised STIRPAT model—a stochastic model for assessing the environmental impact of human activities. The aim is to examine the potential negative correlation between VC investments and CO2 intensity. This motivation stems from previous findings, indicating that increased VC investments spur the diffusion of eco-efficient technologies. The main results affirm a significant negative correlation between VC investments and CO2 intensity, even after controlling for relevant variables and potential confounding factors (e.g., foreign direct investments), country, and year fixed effects, and addressing potential endogeneity through lagging independent variables. Exploring heterogeneity in the baseline results reveals that these findings are consistent only for VC investments in the Asia-Pacific region, in emerging and developing economies, and in areas where they can contribute more to the development of green technologies and innovations. This suggests that VC activity may impact environmental intensity primarily in countries where emission regulations are less stringent or where existing technologies exhibit lower efficiency in terms of energy consumption

    Double burden of malnutrition in persons with obesity

    A paradoxical double challenge has emerged in the last decades with respect to nutrition and nutrition-related clinical conditions. Hunger-related undernutrition continues to represent an unacceptable burden, although its prevalence has been encouragingly reduced worldwide. On the other hand, the prevalence of overweight and obesity, defined as fat excess accumulation with negative impact on individual health, has dramatically increased due to increasingly pervasive obesogenic lifestyle changes. Undernutrition and obesity may coexist in world regions, Countries and even smaller communities and households, being referred to as double burden of malnutrition. It is however important to point out that fat accumulation and obesity may also induce additional nutritional derangements in affected individuals, both directly through metabolic and body composition changes and indirectly through acute and chronic diseases with negative impact on nutritional status. In the current narrative review, associations between fat accumulation in obesity and malnutrition features as well as their known causes will be reviewed and summarized. These include risk of loss of skeletal muscle mass and function (sarcopenia) that may allow for malnutrition diagnosis also in overweight and obese individuals, thereby introducing a new clinically relevant perspective to the obesity-related double burden of malnutrition concept

    Listeria monocytogenes survey in cubed cooked ham packaged in modified atmosphere and bioprotective effect of selected lactic acid bacteria

    The aim of this work was to study the presence of Listeria monocytogenes, as well as the potential activity of two bioprotective cultures (Lyocarni BOX-74 and Lyocarni BOX-57), versus a mix of three L. monocytogenes strains that were intentionally inoculated in cooked cubed ham, packaged in Modified Atmosphere Packaging and stored at different temperatures. The bioprotective cultures limit L. monocytogenes growth in cubed cooked ham stored either at 4◦ C for 60 days and at 4◦ C for 20 days and at 8◦ C for 40 days. The inhibition at 8◦ C is particularly useful for industrial cooked meat products, considering there are often thermal abuse conditions (8◦ C) in the supermarkets. Both the starters can eliminate L. monocytogenes risk and maintain the products safe, despite the thermal abuse conditions. In addition, both culture starters grew without producing perceptible sensory variations in the samples, as demonstrated by the panel of the untrained tasters. The bioprotective LAB produced neither off-odours and off-flavours, nor white/viscous patinas, slime, discoloration or browning. Therefore, according to the obtained data, and despite the fact that cooked cubed ham did not show pH ≤ 4.4 or aw ≤ 0.92, or pH ≤ 5.0 and aw ≤ 0.94, as cited in the EC Regulation 2073/2005. It can be scientifically stated that cubes of cooked ham with the addition of bioprotective starters cultures do not constitute a favourable substrate for L. monocytogenes growth. Consequently, these products can easily fall into category 1.3 (ready-to-eat foods that are not favourable to L. monocytogenes growth, other than those for infants and for special medical purposes), in which a maximum concentration of L. monocytogenes of 100 CFU g−1 is allowed

    Analysis of the Bioprotective Potential of Different Lactic Acid Bacteria Against Listeria monocytogenes in Cold-Smoked Sea Bass, a New Product Packaged Under Vacuum and Stored at 6 ± 2°C

    The aim of the work was to monitor the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in cold-smoked fish products (trout, salmon, and sea bass) marketed in Italy. Cold-smoked sea bass is a new product that has not yet been commercialized and was collected from the production facility. Monitoring data have shown that cold-smoked products can be contaminated by L. monocytogenes, the presence of which has been highlighted mainly by enrichment culture (presence in 25 g). The isolated Listeria were serotyped and belonged mainly to low-virulence serotypes (1/2c), followed by serotypes 1/2a, 1/2b, and 4b. Furthermore, considering the ability of L. monocytogenes to grow in these products due to their chemical–physical characteristics (pH > 6.0, Aw > 0.97) and long shelf life at 4°C, an additional aim was to verify the activity of different bioprotective starters, including Lactilactobacillus sakei (LAK-23, Sacco srl, Via Alessandro Manzoni 29/A, 22071 Cadorago, CO, Italy), Carnobacterium spp., Lacticaseibacillus casei (SAL 106), and Lacticaseibacillus paracasei (SAL 211), in cold-smoked sea bass. All starters were bacteriocin producers. For this experiment, smoked sea bass samples were intentionally inoculated with a mixture of three different strains of L. monocytogenes and of each starter culture. After inoculation, the smoked sea bass were vacuum-packed and stored at 6 ± 2°C for 60 days, simulating the typical abuse storage temperature of markets and home refrigerators. At 0, 15, 30, 45, and 60 days, the sea bass samples were analyzed to evaluate the effectiveness of the starters against L. monocytogenes. Listeria monocytogenes growth was prevented only by the addition of the LAK-23 starter. Indeed, at the end of the shelf life, the amount of L. monocytogenes observed was similar to that in the inoculum. Consequently, the use of this starter can allow the inclusion of cold-smoked sea bass or smoked fish products in category 1.3 of Regolamento CE 2073/2005, which are products that do not support the growth of this microorganism. Finally, the activity of the LAK-23 starter did not produce an off flavor or off odor in the smoked sea bass
