Fibrolipoma of the lip treated by diode laser surgery: A case report
No full textAbstract Introduction Several neoplasms of the adipose tissue can involve the soft tissues of the head and neck region. These neoplasms are mainly treated surgically and an accurate histological examination is mandatory for a precise diagnosis. Case presentation We report a case of fibrolipoma involving the lower lip of a 43-year-old man, which was successfully treated by diode laser surgery. This approach allowed adequate resection of the neoplasm with minimal damage to the adjacent tissues, thus reducing post-surgical scarring. Conclusion Diode laser surgery for the treatment of benign lesions of the oral mucosa appears to be a convenient alternative to conventional blade surgery and has proved to be effective for the excision of fibrolipoma of the lip. The possibility of avoiding direct suture after excision is surely helpful when aesthetic areas, such as the lip, are surgically treated. For these reasons, and also considering the lower histological alteration of the specimen obtained with diode laser surgery if adequately used, the diode laser is undoubtedly a good alternative to conventional surgery.</p

No full textThe Fisher information of local patterns about localization parameters can be used for selecting interesting points in computer vision applications. In this contribution it is shown that evaluation of local Fisher information about position, rotation and size for every point can be performed through a proper filter bank. It is recognized that this approach leads to an extension of the popular Harris salient point detection method, which actually searches for the patterns characterized by relative maxima of the Fisher information about translation. Preliminary experiments indicate that the Fisher information about rotational and scale parameters can be used to improve the repeatability rates of the salient point selection process with respect to the Harris and wavelet based salient point extraction methods

No full textA novel version of the popular SSIM image quality assessment technique, specifically designed to yield uniform MOS prediction in presence of different types of image distortions is presented. Response equalization is obtained through the polynomial combination of a basic SSIM metric with an auxiliary metric characterized by a diverse sensitivity. Accuracy and consistency of this composite index, called E-SSIM, are demonstrated with experiments conducted on two independent archives annotated with MOS values. © 2011 University of Zagreb

No full textBrugada syndrome is a ventricular arrhythmic disease causing sudden cardiac death in patients with structurally healthy heart. Common dental therapies may be risky in such patients as a simple local anesthesia may cause a fatal arrhythmia. We present a case report of a patient who had been referred to our unit with a diagnosis of acute pulpitis of 3.7 in Brugada syndrome and was assessed for cardiologic and anesthesiologic risk. He had been treated by conscious sedation and discharged after few hours. The aim of this report was to give to dental practitioners an update on this theme and to describe multidisciplinary approach adopted in Complex Operative Unit of Odontostomatology of University of Bari Aldo Moro. We described a case highlighting the importance of teamwork composed by three different specialists and the importance of promoting oral health in patients with Brugada syndrome to reduce the overall risk
