Introduction
Drugs are at the centre of a complexly entangled web of science, politics, economics and culture. They are the product of scientific in- novation, and are usually brought to the bedside by private com- panies, following regulations issued by national and international authorities. These regulations are in turn the product of health poli- cies usually reflecting local cultures and ideologies
Global Medicine and History. Nation States, Empires and International Cooperation
This essay review considers three books in the history of biomedicine: Michael Bennett’s War against smallpox, Aro Velmet’s Pasteur’s empire, and Cornelia Knab’s, Pathogens crossing borders. The books cover different timeframes, geographic areas, and human and animal diseases, but they all focus on circulation of individuals and ideas in biomedical sciences. Taken together, the books show the role of nation states, old and new colonial empires, and international organizations in shaping public health by influencing the action of individuals in different cultural contexts. Especially in Bennett’s work, war also plays a part, providing channels and constraints for mobility, and a powerful social framework for the fight against diseases

Cold drugs. Circulation, production and intelligence of antibiotics in Post-WWII years.
The paper details how the earliest antibiotics were subject to a strict control during the earliest phase of the Cold War. Because of antibiotics strategic and economic value, Anglo-American Governments restricted circulation of scientists, techno-scientific know-how and technology related to penicillin production, as well as closely controlling the circulation of the drugs in the Communist countries. These efforts are documented by archival documents, testifying how drugs were actual instruments of propaganda and political strategies, affecting pharmaceutical development both in the Western and the Eastern bloc
