The Effects of Industry 4.0 for Firms and Territories: Introducing the Special Issue
The paper introduces the Special Issue focused on exploring the adoption paths of Industry 4.0 technologies and the implications for firms, clusters, and regions. The five contributions provide relevant insights on the topic through multiple theoretical and empirical lenses. It emerges that Industry 4.0 technologies may positively affect the innovation trajectories of firms and clusters as well as the competitiveness of regions. Emerging research is promising in suggesting that there could be alternative – and peculiar – processes of Industry 4.0 adoption also based on the characteristics of the local (geographical or organizational) context, connecting it with the global perspective and offering the possibility to give value to the heterogeneity of context

Exploiting Industry 4.0 beyond expectations: an empirical study of manufacturing firms
The adoption of various technologies, as measure of the breadth of Industry 4.0, offers multiple benefits that drive technological investment and enhance the competitiveness of manufacturing firms. Based on the literature, we classified the expected benefits and outcomes of Industry 4.0 into two main groups: expected benefits and outcomes related to the market(ing) and manufacturing/production domains. We then used structural equation modelling to link the expected benefits (i.e. drivers) of adoption, Industry 4.0 breadth, and the resulting outcomes with the adopted technologies, based on data for 168 Italian manufacturing firms. The results highlight the key role of market-related benefits, which positively affect the breadth of Industry 4.0 and allow outcomes to be achieved in both the marketing and production domains. Manufacturing firms driven by market factors can meet their expectations in the marketing arena, but also achieve outcomes in the production domain previously not considered for the investment choice. Theoretical and managerial implications have been presented

Industry 4.0 Adoption In Manufacturing Smes: Exploring The Role of Industry and Regional Scale In Northern Italy
Industry 4.0 highlights the advantages for manufacturing firms of advancing business processes and creating new sources of value creation. However, industry specificity may influence the paths of adoption due to the variety of processes considered. Moreover, regional studies stress the link between regional embeddedness, the organization of manufacturing activities and innovation dynamics. This paper explores such relationships based on an original survey of 205 SMEs operating in the Made in Italy sectors and located in Northern Italy. The results reveal the role of both industry and the region in which the firm is located in explaining the differences in terms of Industry 4.0 adoption
