American Evangelicals’ New Testament: How Trump Gained Support From The Nation’s Most “Moral” Voters
For nearly four decades, white Evangelical Christians in the United States rallied around politicians who all fit a similar mold. This consistency was flipped on its head in 2016 when Evangelicals poured out in unprecedented levels to support Donald Trump. Despite being inconsistent with the type of candidate they have traditionally voted for, Evangelicals flocked to the polls with 81% of this group supporting Trump for the presidency. Evangelical support for Trump remained over 75% for the duration of his presidency and his reelection campaign in 2020. This shift begs the following research question: How was Donald Trump able to garner such unprecedented levels of support from Evangelical Christians despite at face value being inconsistent with the type of candidates they have favored for the better part of four decades? In this paper I use a combination of polling data and rhetorical analysis to argue that Trump garnered such high levels of support by leveraging three key themes: (1) “us versus them” framing of immigration issues, (2) fear of Christianity slipping from national prominence, and (3) belief that American society was rapidly degrading, each of which capitalized on Evangelicals’ main fear that their way of life was becoming obsolete in the US
Male characters and the theme of machismo in selected novels by Isabel Allende
The thesis focuses on the theme of machismo and male characters in the novels La casa de los espíritus, Eva Luna and Hija de la fortuna by the Chilean author Isabel Allende. The aim of the study is to examine how male characters are constructed in relation to machismo and traditional gender roles in these works. The analysis is based on literary-theoretical approaches to character (as developed by D. Hodrová and B. Fořt) and draws on concepts of masculinity, power, and culturally conditioned dominance. The thesis explores how individual male characters either reproduce or subvert these stereotypes, and how their identities are shaped within the patriarchal context od Latin American society, which Allende critically reflects in her novels. Key words: Machismo, Isabel Allende, patriarchy, Latin American society, gender rolesPráce se zaměřuje na téma machismu a mužské postavy v románech Dům duchů, Eva Luna a Dcera štěstěny od chilské spisovatelky Isabel Allende. Magical realism in Isabel Allende\u27s trilogy
Magija in realnost sta v vseh treh romanih močno prepleteni, saj sta obe ravni, nadnaravna in realna, enakovredni. In my diploma work I focused on analysing the magical realism in the trilogy of one of the most celebrated Chilenian female writers, Isabel Allende, a representative of Latin American postmodernistic novel. The elements of magical realism expressed in her works are the most distinguished feature of Latin American postmodernism. It is the magical realism which gives her trilogy its postmodernistic character. The trilogy consists of The House of the Spirits, Daughter of Fortune and Portrait in Sepia, a series of three novels, in which the author presents the magic-realistic saga of del Valle family. As the literary characters in the novels come from Allende\u27s real life, the trilogy can be said to be autobiographical. The character presentation, however, is exaggerated, with the female characters taking the dominant part - a result of the influence of feminist ideas. In her novels Allende pays special attention not only to her character presentation but also to politics. The author tries to recreate past events by creating their alternative varieties, reflecting the real historical background.
In all three novels magic and reality are closely interconnected, with the supernatural and the realistic levels having equal weight. Throughout the story supernatural events are described as something entirely commnon and ordinary, and presented as part of reality. The unusual sort of reality, typical of magical realism, is created not only by supernatural elements, but also by cyclic time and alternative history
The core issue of this dissertation is the analysis of personal identity and orientalism on the historical novel, O Rio das Pérolas, (2017) by Isabel Valadão, whose narrative takes place in Macao between 1940 and 1960. It aims to understand how identity - particularly the one of the main character (Maria/Mei Lin) – is built and developed throughout the book, and its relation with the social and cultural existent differences in the territory. It also aims to examine how oriental stereotypes, highly rich in exoticism convey liveliness to the plot. This study is based on Stuart Hall and Edward W. Magic Realism in The House of the Spirits
This work analyses the first famous novel written by Isabel Allende, The House of the Spirits (1982), and focuses mainly on finding and studying the elements of magic realism which can be seen in this book. Firstly, the novel tries to understand its literary and historical contexts. Thus, the work studies the renovation of Latin American Narrative, thanks to which the New Hispanoamerican Literature appears. Related to this, the boom and its very important contribution, magic realism, are analysed. Moreover, the work studies Isabel Allende's biography in order to understand the book better. A great part of the thesis is focused on the elements of magic realism in The House of the Spirits. The next part compares some of the opinions that emerge in relation to Allende and her work and analyses some of the striking similarities between the books of this author and the ones of Gabriel García Márquez. Finally, the work examines the magic that can be found in the novels which were published soon after The House of the Spirits

The dissertation consists of seven chapters, structured into two parts (Volume I), and twenty appendixes (Volume II). Part I (Chapters I to IV) shows that the arte de canto, until now generally overlooked or undervalued in music historiography, was produced in print runs of thousands of copies and sold for a low price; it had a broad circulation in the Iberian Peninsula and the New World, contributing to the spread of musical literacy in distinct didactic contexts (churches, universities, private settings) and among social groups until then excluded from learning the rudiments of music. The little known Juan Martínez’s Arte de canto llano (Seville, 1530) emerges as the most circulated music book in the Hispanic world during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The aim of Part II (Chapters V to VII) is to approach the musical life of the sixteenth-century Iberian world through the exploration of women’s contributions, thus broadening the field of historical research. The study of some connections between music books and women shows that the points of overlap between the private and the public spheres, on the one hand, and the written and the oral music transmission, on the other hand, not only make women’s musical practices visible, but also offer new vistas on the popular culture of the age. Through a variety of source materials (artes de canto, conduct manuals, Inquisition records, literature, letters and inventories of goods, among others) it has been possible to document the musical activities of women such as Catalina de Zúñiga, VI Countess of Lemos, Isabel de Plazaola, and Isabel de Aragón, IV Duchess of the Infantado. Combining methodologies from traditional musicology with those borrowed from book history and popular culture, this dissertation analyzes music in the culture of the Renaissance Iberian world through the prism of double Otherness involved in studying the ‘other’ music books –that is the undervalued artes de canto– and their connections to women of that period
Dementia, decision-making, and the modern (adult) guardianship paradigm: Bentley v Maplewood seniors care society
This paper considers the meaning of decision-making, including substitute decisionmaking, for persons with dementia. The paper discusses the historical development of adult guardianship, from the King’s stewardship of the property of “fools” and “lunatics” to the modern mechanisms of substitute decision-making, and the relationship between substitute decision-making and a particular ideal of autonomy. The paper concludes with a discussion of Bentley v Maplewood Seniors Care Society, a case concerning the present choices of a woman with dementia, the decisions set out in the “living will” she drafted many years earlier (prior to dementia), and the decisions made by the woman’s (purported) representatives on her behalf. Th e case invites us to consider whether the decisions of the former, mentally capable self can ever trump the choices of the current self with dementia.Peer reviewe
