Mill and Socialism : a reply to Capaldi

    No full text
As Nicholas Capaldi notes, ‘the question of Mill’s relation to socialism continues to puzzle scholars’. This article assesses Capaldi’s reading of Mill’s relationship to socialism, occasionally challenging that definition of socialism, and more frequently showing where Mill’s position is more complicated than Capaldi allows. It then turns to a brief sketch of Mill’s socialism, and how it can be said to speak to a debate not just between liberty and equality, but between liberty, equality, and fraternity

New governance (NG) denotes a new approach in the governance strategies. This approach comes with a conceptual background explaining how the hardcore corporate decision-making and people-friendly business strategies have started to converge, relying on executive fiduciary duties, stakeholder engagement, and economic analysis of management incentives. It also addresses how companies incorporate stakeholder-friendly business strategies, examines the role of shareholder and board activism in pushing for social responsibility, and provides quantitative assessments of reporting practices, indexes, and ratings that link governance with responsibility (Kolk 2008; Statman 2005; Deegan 2002). It suggests models for pursuing this emerging frontier through greater involvement on behalf of the board of directors and utilizes a comparative approach to cross the border between the traditional ..

Heritability and Linkage Analysis of Appendicitis Utilizing Age at Onset

    No full text
Appendicitis usually afflicts the young, but there is a large tail in the distribution of onset age. The genetics of this disease are still not well understood. A heritability analysis and genome wide linkage analysis of a large twin dataset was undertaken. Treating age of onset of appendicitis as a censored survival trait revealed a heritability of 0.21, and found evidence of linkage to Chromosome 1p37.3.
