Carlos C. Campbell card
Carlos C. Campbell (1892-1978) was a founding member of the Great Smoky Mountains Conservation Association. Formed in 1923, the association promoted the establishment of a national park in the Great Smoky Mountains. The archival material in this series is part of the records of the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club, formed after a group of outdoor enthusiasts hiked up to Mount LeConte in October 1924. Campbell was also a member of the club and is author of “Birth of a National Park,” published in 1960

Campbell Letter : March 28, 1865
Alexander Campbell writes mainly to tell about Sherman's March to the Sea. He notes that they devastated North and South Carolina by burning, mangling railroads, destroying storage facilities, and liberating munitions, animals, and formerly enslaved peoples. Alexander also estimates that they captured about 8,000 prisoners of war on the way, including Colonel Rhett (likely referring to Confederate Congressman Robert Barnwell Rhett)

It was written by the school's founder, Olive Dame Campbell circa 1945. This brochure was distributed when Campbell spoke to schools and communities about the work of the Folk School.
